BREWING UP NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR EMMA

When it comes to major milestones in our lives, learning to drive and finding a job you love are definitely up there.

For Bundaberg local, Emma, hitting these milestones has been a goal for many years.

Now the 39-year-old has her learner’s licence in hand, is on her way to becoming a certified barista, and is enrolled in a hospitality course at TAFE.

Emma has an intellectual disability and engages Endeavour Foundation’s Bundaberg Learning and Lifestyle day service to support her to achieve her goals to become more independent, confident and increase her social interaction skills.

“When I started going to the service in 2019, I thought I’ll make tea and coffees for everyone, and I’ve been doing that for a very long time,” Emma said.

That initial idea grew into Emma making americanos, mochas and cappuccinos topped with her own latte foam hearts.

As a lifelong learner Emma has a certificate in food safety and hygiene, horticulture, and a general safety induction in the construction industry.

“The plan is to work in a café making coffees for the community when I finish my course,” Emma said.

Endeavour Foundation helped Emma learn the basics during the barista program: taking a customer’s order, using the cash register, and completing the order whilst having a small conversation with the customer.

Emma got her first taste of making coffees at the Learning and Lifestyle service, where she brewed her love for latte art and mixology.

Participating in the program has opened a door to new learning opportunities, and hopefully a step towards open employment for Emma.

When asked what she likes most about making coffees, “making my customers happy and putting a smile on their dial.”

Able to now make 20 different hot and cold beverages – ranging from cappuccinos to frappes and mocktails, Emma learnt initially by copying Endeavour Foundation Support Workers making flat whites.

Emma’s goal is to ultimately find a position in open employment and with the support of Endeavour Foundation, we’re confident she’ll get there!

Feel great knowing your ticket purchase helps support people with intellectual disability to learn life skills, live independently, find a job they

love and be actively involved in their local communities.

Ultimate Life Changer lottery winner, Louise, missed the call that would change her life.

“I was just at home, sitting on the lounge. I had the volume turned down on the phone and I completely forgot about it. But then I noticed some missed calls, so I thought I better see who it is,” she said.

Intrigued about who it might be, Louise returned the call, only to find out that it was the Endeavour Foundation, ringing to deliver the incredible news that she had won $500,000 in gold bullion.

In between tears of joy, Louise checked online to make sure she really had won.

“I told my oldest son straight away, who was very excited, and then we decided to tell Dad after work.”

“We knew it would be a bit of a distraction at work so we thought we would surprise him when he came home.”

When Louise’s husband, Michael, walked through the door that afternoon, Louise decided to stretch the reveal out a little bit longer.

“I tried to trick him to draw it out as long as I could for my own enjoyment!” she said laughing.

When Michael was finally told that they were now half a million dollars richer, he was over the moon.

“He’s very happy because of me not working for such a long time,” Louise said.

“My youngest son has autism and an intellectual disability, so I’m not able to work.

“It’s almost like we’ve been recouped for everything I haven’t been able to earn.”

Given the choice of keeping the gold bullion or cashing it in, Louise and her husband decided to go for the cash - but they’re not going on a spending spree.

Far from it.

“My husband is the most sensible person you’ve ever met. I like to spend but I’m not silly,” Louise said.

“We want to put some into holidays but leave a lot of it to help us in our retirement – I think we’ll do better in retirement than we do now!” she laughed.

Louise and her husband have been long-time supporters of the Endeavour Foundation, having bought their first tickets over a decade ago.

“I love the Sunshine Coast hinterland and we were up there on a holiday and we knew that the prize home was up there, so we went to have a look.

“We’d never bought tickets before and it was so lovely, so we bought one or two tickets.

“We kept buying tickets and then at some point

later, we changed to be a Star Supporter because it’s such a good cause.

“That sort of thing is so important to me because of my son. He’s not as severely disabled as some people are, but the same things still apply.

“You worry what’s going to happen with their living arrangements etcetera, so I think it’s a great charity,” Louise said.

While being Star Supporters has also ensured that they’re in the draw for every lottery without having to remember to buy tickets, there’s another reason why Louise has chosen this option.

“I like the idea of being a Star Supporter because the charity can rely on that money coming in,” she said.

Louise is now looking forward to a family holiday to the Sunshine Coast and is starting to dream about overseas trips once international travel is back on the cards.

“We were planning a trip to the UK, then the pandemic came up, so now we may go to New Zealand or something like that,” Louise said.

“And Uluru, that’s where I want to go.” she added.

And with half a million in the bank, she won’t have to save a penny to do it. *Names have been changed for privacy reasons.

#437 LOTTERY

For Endeavour Foundation Prize Home winner, Micha*, his first home in Australia was markedly different to the home he now owns.“I was a Dutch boy immigrant in the ’50s. One of six kids. We lobbed into a country town in WA where my uncle and aunt had a few acres and all of us had to live in a converted chook shed for the first six months,” Micha said.“So, it’s a huge leap from that to this!”The ‘this’ is a $1.3 million resort-style Sunshine Coast Prize Home Micha and his partner, Amanda, are now settling in to.“I’ve never won anything, maybe a few dollars in lotto, but I guess I’ve been waiting for the big one!” he laughed. On the day that changed his life, Micha was detailing a two-year-old jaguar for some friends up the road. “I’m retired and sometimes I detail cars just to keep me active,” he explained.

After stopping to take the call from Lotteries Manager, Kirsty Moore, and discovering that he’d won, not surprisingly, Micha found it a little harder to concentrate on the task at hand. “I walked around for hours thinking this can’t be real, this can’t be real.“We’re in the process of downsizing and the unit we’re going into we couldn’t access until the first of November, so we had to find somewhere to rent,” Micha said.Just that day, they had just signed a lease on a rental property an hour before they got the call from Endeavour. Needless to say, the lease was torn up and the couple travelled to Palmview on the Sunshine Coast to receive the keys to their new home. “We’d seen pictures on the internet but, walking down the hallway, through to the pool, and the little forest out the back – real life was one hundred times better than the photos.”

“It’s a beautiful spot and all the décor – everything matches perfectly. It’s superb,” Micha said.

Micha has been a long-time supporter of the Endeavour Foundation and knows just how important Endeavour’s services are for those with intellectual disability.

Being a Star Supporter has ensured that Micha has guaranteed tickets in every lottery, so he never misses a draw.

“It’s just deducted automatically, and I hardly notice it,” he said.

And Micha isn’t planning on stopping any time soon.

“I’ll continue to be a supporter forever.”

“Since our win, many of our friends have entered the next Endeavour lottery. They now believe that real people do actually win!”
