UNITED STATES

PC-ICP-AM3 United States ca.Late 1950s Musical Postcard: You Always Hurt the One You Love Perf: Spike Jones (Popular) Label: Musical Postcard Company; 630 W. Adams St.,

Chicago, IL Illust: (Color) (?) Notes: This may well be the earliest known prehistoric cavepeople record cover.

It’s an illustration of an overweight caveman holding his girlfriend by the hair and bending over to kiss her head after just knocking her out with his club. This gives a new twist to the usual fifties caveman-cavewoman theme where here the caveman is apologetic for his obnoxious behavior. This is an oversized rectangular postcard, measuring 6 inches by 9 inches, made to be played at 33⅓rpm. The illustration was overlaid with a transparent plastic material into which the grooving was impressed. The un-punched-out spinal hole can be barely seen (on left) where “33⅓” is printed on the back side of the postcard.

The song is a pop standard, written by Allan Roberts and Doris Fisher, first recorded by Spike Jones in 1945. However, the release date of this musical postcard is very difficult to pin down: it would have to be later that 1949 because it’s long playing and the style of the illustration seems to place it around the late 1950s or maybe 1960. The record seller told how he found this postcard along with many other old postcards – They “were actually found in the top of an old Tobacco barn in Franklin, TN. The original owner was a WW2 pilot and once out of the military had opened a laundromat with a store front, back in the 50's/60's.” (Cline 2017) Ref: Cline, Matt 2017, eMail dated 14 March 2017, Murfreesboro, TN Meyers, Harold 1955, Caveman Cartoons, Avon Publications Inc., New York, NY, 95p. _____________________________________ PC-ICP-AM4 United States ca.1960-61 1. LP: ALLEY OOP Perf: (?) (Rock – RK-A# ) Label: Broadway BR 5002 2. CD: THE PURPLE CRITTER’S OLD FAVORITES (2005) Perf: (?) (Rock – RK-A# ) Label: 108th Street (?) Illust: (Color) Stauffer Notes: Shows a cross-eyed caveman (supposedly Alley Oop) waving a club as he rides a spiky-back red dinosaur. Nothing like the style of Vincent T. Hamlin’s drawings of Alley Oop. This illustration appeared on an early LP and much later on a CD. For more information see under Rock Music – Alley Oop - Early. Ref: Alley Oop LP, Discogs The Purple Critter’s Old Favorites CD, Allmusic

_____________________________________ PC-ICP-AM5 United States 1962 45: ALLEY OOP Perf: Hollywood Argyles (Rock – Alley Oop) Label: Wham 7037 Illust: (?) Notes: Shows a childlike drawing of a caveman standing and leaning with his left arm on the handle of his stone axe. Far from the style of Vincent T. Hamlin’s drawings of Alley Oop. For more information see under Rock Music – Alley Oop – Early. Ref: Hollywood Argyles, Alley Oop 45, Wham label, 45cat

Notes: Trucutú is the Spanish name for Alley Oop. The cover illustration shows a salsa orchestra, nine musicians dressed as cavemen playing their instruments in a prehistoric setting with a cave (on bottom right) and an active volcano. Eva EVA B35 & Eva EVA 852 128 Artist: (Color) Visconti Notes: Against a starry night sky with an enlarged moon, a caveman with beard and scraggly hair, dressed in a cheetah skin, which is ripped open down the left side, is seen in profile walking toward the left. He is carrying a long club in his left hand. This same painting is repeated on the back cover. One blogger-critic wrote – “The cover drawing of a cave man is completely apt. Joseph sings like he’s about to hit you in the head with a club. His gruff, gravely (sic) voice is completely perfect for [the] songs…” (Rockin-Hood 2009) For more information see under Rock Music – Psychedelic. Italian 45: Troglodyte (Cave Man) RCA Victor N 1659 Notes: This sketch of a Neanderthal man in profile showing the receding forehead first appeared as a small part of a complex surrealistic painting on the cover of the "It Just Begun" LP album (bottom left on cover). No attempt has been made to list all the releases on LP and single for all the different countries that used this cover illustration. For this listing go to Rock Music – Soul – Troglodyte (Cave Man).

French Spanish Portuguese Italian The cover sleeve of the French & Spanish singles has a detail of just this sketch taken from the LP cover "It Just Begun." The French pic cover, “Luther the Anthropoid,” is tinted light green and the Spanish 45, “Troglodyte,” is in full color.

The Portuguese picture cover for the single 45, “Troglodyte,” had just the head of the Neanderthal man in profile. Whereas the Italian 45, “Troglodyte,” used a detail of the bottom left portion of the "It Just Begun" LP and blacked out the central part of the illustration. Then for their 1972 "Phase Two" LP it was used again as a sort of trademark placed within a very small medallion in the bottom right corner of the back cover. This vignette is for, “Cave Man Blues,” a humorous double-entendre blues number about coal miners where Stanza II refers to Floyd Collins. Crumb decided to depict the black caveman in the traditionally humorous fashion, wearing a leopard skin and carrying a club, as he drags off his woman by the hair. A volcano smokes in the distance.
