Replacing the VW battery in your vehicle? One critical factor is choosing the right group size. Get this wrong, and your new battery will be unreliable and likely to break down. What does ‘group size’ mean and how do you know you’re buying the right VW battery for your car? As the name suggests, the battery size determines whether it’ll fit the physical dimensions of your vehicle. Also important is the type of terminals and where they’re located. You’ll usually find the group size number on your existing battery; it’s a three-digit code, like ‘096’ or ‘063’. Simply enter that number in a store’s battery finder to get a list of compatible batteries from different manufacturers. If you don’t see this code, don’t worry. Measure the battery’s dimensions, note the terminals’ location (front, rear or side) and look at the terminal type. The majority have the standard UK post terminals (17.5mm at the base on the negative post, 19.5mm for the positive). Some are narrower or use a square-bolt through post and a few have a side terminal. A VW battery will almost certainly have the group size code printed on its casing, though.
