Volunteers Needed

Have you heard of Volunteer Kansas? It’s a website

(www.volunteerkansas.org) for people who want to find

exciting and useful ways to engage in their community.

Students can browse opportunities to volunteer by loca-

tion or by their interests.

United Way has a website that lists

volunteer opportunities for teens. For

more information, visit http://

www.unitedwayplains.org/teen-

volunteers/ .

Turn in hours to your

CHARGE Teacher. Check

google classroom for the number

of hours you have turned in.

Kansas Humane Society See information on website: https://

www.kshumane.org/how-to-help/volunteer.html

Price Harris Elementary Price-Harris PTO needs volunteers to help take

care of children so their parents can attend PTO

meetings. Middle-school or high-school age volun-

teers play with children during the meeting, super-

vised by two adults. Meetings are from 6:30-7:30

PM at Price-Harris on the following dates: April

16; May 14. If interested in volunteer, please con-

tact Ellen Rife at [email protected].

Wichita Public Library Will you be in grades 8-12 next year? Want to

help your community, but don't know how? Volun-

teer at the Library this summer! You'll meet other

teens, help kids sign up for the Summer Reading

Program, and assist staff with important tasks. It's

a fun way to get experience that looks good on a

college application or resume! If your school or

club requires community service hours, volunteer-

ing at the Library could help you meet your goals.

For more information visit:

ALL Community Service Hours are due

Friday, May 3!

Bonding Through Board Games Bonding thru Board Games is an evidence-

based K-State Research & Extension program

helping strengthening family/ friends relation-

ship through board games on April 13. There’s

a plethora of benefits when family/friends play

board games. Participants will find information

of those benefits in our booth at the event. Our

event is getting closer and we are in need of

volunteers. Volunteers will learn and teach a

simple board game at a table to participants.

Volunteer time requirement: 2 hrs. minimum.

We will begin work on the final topic of Module 1, Pro-

portional Relationships. This week we will complete

the first three lessons. Look for a copy of the pages

from the book and our class slides on Google Class-

room each day. With these pages available at home,

students do not need to carry the book. Also, help stu-

dents to remember that they need 60 minutes of Ma-

thia each week. Out Mathia goal is to finish the first

eight work spaces by Friday.

This week’s focus is photosynthesis and its oppositional

process, respiration. Our labs and notes should lead up to

an escape room activity by Thursday. Depending upon time

constraints, we will test at the end of this week or at the

beginning of the following week. I will check pages 68-69

this week in the Science journals. These pages both con-

tain simulation labs that we completed in class; therefore,

there are no additional summaries or conclusions for either

of these pages. Students just need to give thorough an-

swers for the questions shown.

We will be watching a video about the life of Gerda

Weisman Klein who survived the holocaust and the

Death March. We will then be working on a Blended

Poem using her memories and the memories of each

student. We will be doing a philosophical chairs on

Shultz’ dilemma, trying to decide what paths teach of

us would have taken if faced with the Holocaust. We

will also do some reading reflections and share with

one another what we are learning from our own self-

selected Holocaust books.

Students will complete a study guide over Chap-

ter 12 in class on Tuesday in preparation for the

test on Wednesday. We will be working on our

Build-A-Book on Thursday.

Room 224 kids are reading a lengthy New York Times

article on the dangers of teenage smoking and vaping

as we analyze the writing style of journalists as com-

pared to fiction writers. Our focus will be on the way

that writers weave data, scientific evidence, and per-

sonal anecdotes to create a gripping article and to en-

gage their readers. Wordly Wise lesson 15 is on deck

to be finished before the long weekend. We will also

announce the winning teams in our “Nicky Carver” writ-

ing contest next week!

On Tuesday, April 16th, students will take a quiz

that will require them to know how to correctly

spell all of the vocabulary words from Chapter 2A

in their textbooks. A great tool for preparing for

this quiz is the quizlet.com website. In the site's

search box, please type "tktflores" and look for

my link to Chapter 2A.

We will be learning about subject pronouns and –

ar verb conjugations this week! Expect to hear a

lot of silly grammar songs! The next schedule quiz

is on Friday, April 26th.

6th Grade Math 6+: Math students will continue to work on

Proportionality next week. We probably won’t test on this

topic until the following week, as math state assessments

may take longer than one class period. Make sure your

child gets a good night’s sleep!

6th Grade Math 7+: Math students have recently started

Pythagorean Theorem, and we will continue with this topic

all of next week. Make sure your child is well rested for

math state assessments coming up!

Students will take the grammar quizzes over Ch. 4A on Tues-

day, April 16th. They can go online to www.phschool.com to

practice for the quizzes. The web codes that they will need

to access the practice activities are jcd-0403 and jcd-

0404. We will spend the rest of next week practicing and

beginning oral presentations.

Seventh graders will be studying body systems

next week. After that they will be transitioning into

a study of stimulus and response.

The time has arrived! We start SHAKESPEARE.

Students should have their copies of A Midsum-

mer Night’s Dream in class on Monday.

We are moving the grammar quiz that was sched-

uled for April 12 to Tuesday, April 16th over Ir and

interrogatives. We will spend the second half of

the week working on oral presentation prep.

We will finish Chapter 5 (the statehood and the Civil War) and

work our way through Chapter 6 (homesteading and immigrants to

Kansas). The DBQ final draft was due today, so you will see a turn

in grade on Parent Vue. That isn’t the final grade, it is just a mark-

er that the paper was submitted. I have noticed several students

low on notebook paper; please check with your student that they

have all the supplies they need to finish out the year.

This coming week, 7th graders will continue our

study of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s

Dream. We’ll focus on character and plot devel-

opment.

Math students will continue their study of Pythag-

orean Theorem next week. We won’t test over

this topic until the following week.

rean Theorem.

We will finish working on Module 4 Topic 1: Real Number System, with a test on Thursday, April 18. I will

This coming week, 8th graders will continue our

unit on Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Noth-

ing, focusing on character and plot development.

Algebra students will add, subtract, and multiply

polynomials this week. A quiz is scheduled for

Thursday.

We are finishing Chapter 14, Reform Move-

ments. Students will be asked to write a Brief Bio

of one reformer. This will be an out-of-class as-

signment, given on Tuesday and submitted on

Tuesday, April 23rd. We will begin Chapter 15

midweek. We only have two more chapters in our

curriculum, but as both of those chapters are

dealing with the Civil War, our pace will slow on

Chapters 15 and 16.

On Tuesday of next week students will finish the

Chapter 6B test and then begin a novel called El

Viaje de su Vida. It tells the story of a boy from

Cincinnati, Ohio, who is the only witness to the

theft of a valuable necklace while he and his fami-

ly are on a cruise to Mexico. What a fun way to

wrap up the school year!

Eighth Graders will be studying asexual and sexual

reproduction this next week. They will then transi-

tion into a study on gene traits and mutations
