P I A N O These are drawings that match the pointer hands in the Anybody Can Play Piano app. Young children relate well to colors so colors are used for identification purposes. The children should learn this color coding so well that they don’t have to think about which finger is which color. It should be an automatic response. In addition to coloring the fingers to match the colors in the app, there are other things one can do to solidify the finger colors. CHANT: This is my ______ fin-ger, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap. This is my ______ fin-ger, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap. Etc. NOTE: The ^ indicates a musical beat...maybe tap to the beat with your feet as you chant? If the children are chanting about the right hand, have them touch the correct right hand finger with their left hand pointer finger when the chant the words, “This is my ______ finger”, then tap on the table, on the floor, or on themselves during the “tap” part with the correct right hand finger. Always chant in rhythm. If you just tap quickly on the last tap, be sure to wait for those additional 3 beats before you begin the chant for another finger. LOOK and POINT: Cut out, color code front and back (for left and right hand), and laminate a pointer. Holding up pointer, point to a finger on the pointer and have the children point to their corresponding finger. Switch from right hand to left hand side frequently as soon as the children are able to perceive the difference. It might be useful to put a “RH” on the right hand side and a “LH” on the left hand side. “RH” and “LH” are frequently used in music directions.
