SMM Offshore Dialogue, the SMM Ship Finance Forum and Recruiting Day into the SMM programme.

The shipbuilding and offshore supply industries are encouraged to make every effort to boost their competitiveness. Uwe Beckmeyer, parliamenta-ry state secretary at Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy and federal government coordinator for the

maritime industry, commented on the importance of the mar-itime sector as an innovation driver, praising its willingness to embrace high technology. Taking issue with the political environment, he emphasised: “We need a clear, internationally harmonised regulatory frame-work to support government backing for ship financing.” All stakeholders, including China, should make an effort to pursue the international negotiations in a cooperative spirit so as to achieve the common objec-tive soon, he said. He also en-couraged the shipbuilding and offshore supply industries to make every effort to boost their competitiveness and strengthen their strong position in the glob-al marketplace by maintaining their technology leadership. The sector can count on the sup-port of politics in this respect, Beckmeyer assured, promis-ing: “The innovation incentive programme for the ship- >

building industry will be con-tinued. The German federal government has successfully intervened on behalf of this programme in Brussels. Called “Next-Generation Maritime Technologies”, the programme supports new, future-oriented maritime technologies. Beck-meyer also mentioned the “National Master Plan for Mar-itime Technologies”, a platform joining politics, science, the industry and the German state governments to form a support-ive network. He left no doubts

regarding the objectives of this initiative: “We want to maximise

the potential of maritime tech-nologies to help German com-panies grow their market share.”

“High energy prices and new environmental regulations are a massive challenge for the industry”Competition among the ship-building countries remains fierce, confirmed Martin Stop-ford, president of Clarkson Research: “Today’s shipowners face a tough market outlook and major cost pressures caused by high energy prices and a se-

ries of new environmental reg-ulations governing emissions from ships. This is a massive challenge for the industry be-cause there are so many possi-ble solutions, some of which are better than others. Finding the right technology for improving the efficiency of newbuildings and retrofitting existing ships is vital,” he said. “SMM provides the ideal opportunity to review what’s on offer from the world’s shipyards and marine equip-ment suppliers and to discuss the practicalities with them.”

Monday, 8 SeptemberExperts met yesterday, SMM’s Finance Day, for the SMM Ship Finance Forum, an at-tractive event format with internationally renowned ex-perts. By including the per-spective of the manufacturing industry, it offered new ideas and answers to SMM exhibi-tors and visitors alike.

Tuesday, 9 September The first official day of SMM is dedicated to the protection of the maritime environment.

Participants of gmec, the glob-al maritime environmental congress (motto: “Setting the Green Course”), will discuss advanced solutions and tech-nologies enabling the shipping industry to achieve its ambi-tious environmental targets.

Wednesday, 10 September The security and defence of tomorrow is the featured topic. At MS&D, the international conference on maritime secu-rity and defence, the threats of terrorism, piracy und polit-

ical crises will be the centre of interest. Experts will present new solution concepts and explain the plans of policy-makers and the role of private security guards.

Thursday, 11 September This day will be entirely dedi-cated to the offshore segment. At the SMM Offshore Dia-logue, experts will examine the synergies, development potential and challenges of the offshore industry. Along with deep-sea research and oil

and gas exploration projects, wind energy is a field of great importance.

Friday, 12 SeptemberOn the final day of SMM, at-tention will focus on recruit-ing. Professional education and follow-up training as well as personnel recruitment for German companies will be the topic of the day. The Maritime Career Market will provide an excellent opportunity for grad-uates and professionals to meet up with hiring companies.

Comprehensive engineering simulation

CD-adapco is the world‘s largest pri- vately held CAE provider focused on CFD. The company has 30 years of experience in delivering dedicated state-of-the-art flow, thermal, and stress simulation solu-tions to the marine industry. CD-adapco will be presenting its technology-leading

simulation packages STAR-CCM+and STAR-CD at this year’s SMM.

Substantial improvements in CFD technol-ogy have made its applications in the marine sector an indispensable supplementary tool to traditional experimental and computa-

tional design methodologies. The key as-pect of modern design lies in successfully analysing different designs and identifying the optimum ones before stepping into the test rig, thereby reducing time and costs while effectively optimising the design. Nu-merical simulation offers the solution.

Success driven by customer satisfactionCD-adapco’s software STAR-CCM+ enables customers to tackle some of the most de-manding problems of the marine industry, al-lowing engineers and designers to predict ac-curately how different designs will perform in operation before budget is committed to the construction of expensive prototypes. Dur-ing SMM 2014, the company will demon-strate how simulation capabilities can help marine engineers in the following areas: ship keeping, slamming and sloshing, marine pro-pulsion, cavitation analysis, wave and wind loading, oil and pollutant dispersion.

Exhibitors define future of shippingWith 90,000m² of exhibition space, more than 2,000 exhibitors and over 50,000 industry visitors, SMM is the leading trade fair of the global mari-time industry. The motto of this year’s event, under the patronage of Ger-man Chancellor Angela Merkel, is “In-novation”. The maritime mega-event will cover all of the space available at Hamburg’s fair site: eleven exhibition halls (B1 to B7, and A1 to A4), plus a new hall called B8.

Each hall will be dedicated to a particu-lar field of the shipping world. Hall A1, for instance, will feature ship operation equipment, environmental technologies as well as deck equipment and cargo han-dling systems. Becker Marine Systems will be among the exhibitors in this hall.“For our company, SMM is the most im-portant trade fair. Our customers from both the shipyard and shipowning sectors use this fair to keep up-to-date on inno-vative trends, and to network,” said Dirk Lehmann, managing director of Becker Marine Systems.

Offshore discussions and talent searchThe offshore market and recruitment of skilled staff for the shipbuilding and supply industries are two of the featured topics at SMM. The SMM Daily News will report on them in detail in the issues to come.

Offshore DayThe offshore market is obviously in good health. But what does the industry need, and which shipyards are able to benefit? What does this mean for suppliers of ma-rine equipment? Answering these and other questions will be the purpose of the Offshore Dialogue on September 11th, the designated Offshore Day of SMM 2014. More than 500 experts will discuss the syn-ergies, development potential and challeng-es of the offshore segment.

Recruiting DaySMM’s Recruiting Day, on September 12th, will bring together trainers, employers and

applicants, providing a job service platform to help human resources executives from the industry attract job seekers and provide in-formation about industry-specific education and training programmes offered by employ-

ers. Companies and institutes will introduce themselves at the “Maritime Career Market”. As a special service, secondary school and university-level students will be admitted to the fair free of charge on September 12th.

At SMM, top experts will be presenting new security concepts for sea routes. The centrepiece of all security discussions is the Maritime Security & Defence (MS&D) conference, to be held tomorrow, Sep-tember 10th, on SMM’s Security and De-fence Day. It will be the fifth edition of the conference.*

Security at sea is improving. In recent months, pirate attacks on merchant ves-sels have been successfully repelled with increasing frequency. One reason is the military protection provided by the Euro-pean Union-led counter-piracy Operation Atalanta in the Gulf of Aden off the coast of Somalia. Since February 1st 2009, mer-

chant vessels have been able to use a transit corridor established there. International naval units escort container ships and gas tankers through the corridor.

Problems remainOperation Atalanta thus ensures secure passage of civilian ships along the trade

routes, preventing hijackings for ransom and enforcing international law. What has also helped fend off pirates are the securi-ty measures taken by shipping companies, particularly the use of private security teams. This strategy has worked very well.“To date, pirates have never succeeded in boarding or hijacking a ship that had an armed security team on board,” noted Mi-chael Behrendt, president of VDR, the Ger-man shipowners’ association. But the prob-lem is far from solved. A new piracy-prone sea region has emerged off the coast of West Africa. So the demand for security meas-ures and techniques continues to be strong.Piracy is on the agenda of the international MS&D conference.“New ways to protect sea routes and ports will also be discussed this year,” said Bernd Aufderheide, president and CEO of Ham-burg Messe und Congress GmbH (HMC). “The strong interest shows that the MS&D conference has established itself as a meet-ing place and source of inspiration for the industry.”As in past years, HMC is organising the conference jointly with its partner, DVV/Griephan, and the German Maritime In-

stitute (DMI). There will be two panel discussions. The first is titled “Maritime Challenges of Globalisation”, and the sec-ond “Future Maritime Capabilities”. The keynote speaker will be Sarah Kenny, man-aging director of QinetiQ Maritime. She will discuss the “future development of maritime security and defence”.

Advanced naval ships and frigates“At this year’s SMM we once again wel-come top-level delegations from navies and coast guards around the world,” Auf-derheide said.Naval forces today not only defend na-tional and allied interests and enforce embargoes, but increasingly must also secure coasts and aid convoys as well as combat terrorism and piracy.“This conference is an ideal platform for the maritime industry and naval author-ities to share views and information,” remarked Hans-Joachim Stricker, vice admiral (ret) of the German Navy. Strick-er is co-chairman of MS&D and presi-dent of DMI.In exhibition Hall B8, numerous ship-yards, suppliers and service providers from the maritime security sector will showcase their offerings. Hamburg’s har-bour will be the scene of a special SMM highlight: Several modern naval ships will be mooring there, including Dutch and German frigates.

Up on the bridge or down in the engineering room, you don’t need your computers beside you to have complete control over your IT systems.

With G&D’s KVM technology, you can remove computers from control rooms into one safe location. As a result, you’ll create more space with less noise and less heat and enjoy a better working environment.

For complete flexibility, users can access the systems wherever they are on board – all they need are the necessary peripherals e.g. a mouse and a keyboard and one or more display screens.

In addition, KVM systems from G&D deliver more safety. Our systems not only provide mission-critical features that monitor our KVM equipment but they can also measure several parameters of the systems they’re connected to.

On ships, in special applications control, in vessel traffic service (VTS), on offshore platforms…for complete control with flexibility the answer is KVM – from G&D.

Three questions for...

SMM set records when it celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2012, for example in the number of exhibitors. How do you expect to top that this year? What makes up SMM 2014?

Every two years, Hamburg is the capital of the global mari-time industry for a week in September. With some 90,000m² of exhibition space, more than 2,100 exhibitors and over 50,000 visitors, SMM is the world’s leading maritime indus-try trade fair. It’s where industry representatives meet. This year we’ve been able to surpass the record numbers of the event’s anniversary edition in 2012. As always, we’ve been booked up for months and are pleased to have even more exhibitors and more participating countries this year. Dubai and Ireland, for instance, are at SMM for the first time. Two-thirds of our exhibitors come from abroad, and one-third from Germany. This year’s SMM will once again be held under the patronage of German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Running parallel to SMM is a top-flight conference programme. For the first time, each day of the fair will be dedicated to a particular topic. Our five central topics are financing, maritime environmental pro-tection, recruiting, security and defence, and offshore. We’ve organised a high-calibre conference for each topic.

How can SMM keep its status as the shipbuilding industry’s leading trade fair, let alone enhance it, when shipbuilding is now fully concentrated in Asia?

All of the important shipbuilding nations are present at SMM, and European companies are prominently repre-sented. In terms of surface area booked, European ship-builders are ranked at the top, with Germany followed by the Netherlands, Norway, the UK and Denmark.SMM is even more attractive this year. Due to the great deal of interest, we’re creating additional capacities again in 2014 with the high-quality temporary Hall B8. SMM will remain the world’s leading maritime industry trade fair in the future, and Hamburg will remain a maritime centre.

What’s your personal SMM highlight this year?

My highlight – along with our exhibitors’ numerous technical innovations, of course – is our dedicated top-ic days. Having high-calibre international participants, the top conferences (SMM Ship Finance Forum, gmec, MS&D and SMM Offshore Dialogue) will provide an-swers to important questions in the maritime industry and point to future trends. New this year is the Maritime Career Market, an ideal opportunity for personal con-tacts between top companies in the industry and special-ists as well as up-and-coming talents.

»SMM will remain the world’s leading maritime industry trade fair in the future, and Hamburg will remain a maritime centre.«

> ABOUT LUKOIL AND LUKOIL MARINE LUBRICANTS:

Lukoil is the Russian oil industry’s leader in the exploration, production, refining and marketing of petroleum products. The company was founded in 1991 through the merger of a group of oil-and-gas-pro-duction companies located in the western Siberian cit-ies of Langepas, Urai and

Kogalym. The initial letters of these cities form the acro-nym LUK. In 2007, Lukoil decided to put its expertise in lubricants technology to use in the maritime industry. An independent company, Lukoil Marine Lubricants fo-cuses on the production and global sales and marketing of marine lubricants.

As Dubai-based Lukoil Marine Lubricants constantly expands its product range, “the main consideration is combining economy and ecology“, Stefan Claussen, technical and mar-keting director of the company‘s Hamburg office, told the SMM Daily News.

The Lukoil team at SMM is presenting fairgoers a number of innovations at its Stand 300 in Hall A4. iCOlube is having its world premiere there.“A lot of shipping companies already use our cylinder oil Nav-igo 100 MCL, with a base number (BN) of 100mg KOH/g. We were the first to put a 100 BN cylinder oil on the market,” Jan Thiedeitz, COO of Lukoil Marine Lubricants in Hamburg, said by way of background. “Navigo 100 MCL not only reduces wear rates but also operating costs, particularly during the de-mands of slow-steaming operation.”Over the past two years, Lukoil, together with the engine manufacturers MAN and Wärtsilä, has demonstrated the ca-pabilities of the new high-performance oil on various marine engines. Lukoil’s edge in experience has made it today’s market leader in 100 BN oils.

iCOlube for the perfect cylinder oilHowever, a full 100 BN oil is only needed with high sulphur levels in the bunker fuel. To optimise engine performance and efficiency, Lukoil developed iCOlube.“It stands for ‘intelligent cylinder oil lubrication,’” said Claus-sen, one of the developers of the innovative system. “The iCO-lube unit is designed to tailor a cylinder oil perfectly to the pre-vailing engine requirements and fuel quality. It optimises our NAVIGO 100 MCL cylinder oil by adding either fresh or used engine oil such as NAVIGO 6 SO.” With the engine always remaining at its optimum feed rate, the operator only needs to enter the sulphur content of the fuel. this way “iCOlube ensures safe and easy operation while saving oil costs at the same time”, Claussen said. What is more, the system helps to avoid excessive alkalinity re-serves, reduces cylinder oil and fuel consumption and used sys-tem oil disposal. Compared with conventional ship operation, iCOlube reduces environmental impacts. Considering only the aspect of climate change, iCOlube enables a 13% reduction of CO2 equivalent.

EALs: no more compromises At SMM, Lukoil will also showcase an innovative product line that it has put on the market for use outside engine rooms. In cooperation with Mannheim-based Fuchs Europe Schmier- stoffe, Lukoil specialists have developed a completely new line of oil products that comply with all requirements for envi-ronmentally acceptable lubricants (EALs) – “while providing at least the same quality as the previously used mineral oils”, Claussen said. Some background: The United States has sharply tightened environmental regulations for nearly all ships exceeding 24m in length that enter its waters. Under the Vessel General Per-mit that took force on December 19th 2013, these vessels must use EALs, which are rapidly biodegradable, in all oil-to-water

interfaces. Such interfaces are found in many underwater com-ponents of a ship, including the stern tube seal, the mechanics in the variable pitch propeller, bow thruster, rudder post, pod drive and stabilisers as well as dredging equipment.“In our new product line we use selected fully saturated ester oils that meet all requirements for both safe and environmen-tally friendly ship operation,” Claussen said. These lubricating and hydraulic oils show better seal compat-ibility and considerably improved operating characteristics compared with other ester oils that have been available on the market so far. This means that the previous compromises with regard to the service life and temperature resistance of biode-gradable oils are no longer necessary. According to Claussen, Lukoil is the first to provide this new technology, which due to its high ageing resistance and good water tolerance should allow vessel operation with the usual docking intervals of at least five years. All bio-oils carry the European Union Ecolabel, given to prod-ucts and services that have a reduced environmental impact throughout their life cycle.

KVM: pioneering for almost three decadesGuntermann & Drunck (G&D) will dis-play KVM products for maritime IT ap-plications on ship bridges, in control rooms and on offshore platforms.

For users on ship bridges or in control rooms, applying KVM means working without any distractions caused by comput-er equipment, G&D said. The equipment benefits from ac-cess-protected, air-conditioned server rooms, which help ensure reliable performance and long life cycles. The IT staff is able to main-tain and configure the equipment from the server room without hav-ing to go to the bridge or control room, where they might distract the people work-ing there. Thanks to in-house development and manufacturing, all G&D products can be combined into a broad variety of solu-

What does KVM mean?Originally, the acronym KVM characterised a technology for switching or extending a com-puter’s keyboard, video and mouse signals. Over the years, more signals have been added to the functional range, and KVM

was enhanced by various manage-ment and monitoring functions.

The three main product groups are KVM extenders (extending comput-

We want to establish LNG as a fuel for ship propulsion systems. That’s why, for exam-ple, we have initiated projects with a variety of suppliers, shipping companies and ports for LNG storage, the least expensive way to rebuild engines and the provision of gas-re-lated logistics,” said Dirk Lehmann, Beck-er Marine Systems’ co-managing director. “This is about us showing our competence in new technical systems and concepts.”The company would also like to encourage the wide spread use of grease-free rudder systems. To prevent grease from ships get-ting into the sea, completely grease-free and heavy-duty polymer bearing systems have been developed in collaboration with vari-ous manufacturers – a further step towards improving environmental protection in the global shipping industry. It is also possible to retrofit existing systems inexpensively.Becker Marine Systems has already sold more than 800 of its Becker Mewis Duct® – the 750th duct will be displayed in gold at the SMM. “We also want it to represent the reduction of about 880,000 tonnes of CO2 by all of the ducts delivered by the time of the exhibition,” said Lehmann.

The million-tonne CO2 mark is projected to be hit by the end of 2014.Becker Marine Systems is forecast to in-crease sales by about 20% in the current business year. By the end of the year, the number of employees worldwide will be

230, with 135 in Hamburg. Becker Marine Systems has recently opened an office in Houston (USA).

“Banks are lending again”

Yesterday, September 8th, SMM’s Finance Day, the SMM Ship Finance Forum was held for the second time. Financing solu-tions for global shipbuilding and shipping were discussed. In the run-up to the fo-rum, Uwe-Carsten Wiebers, global head of maritime industries at KfW IPEX-Bank and member of the SMM advisory board, spo-ke about innovative financing solutions und Europe‘s continued international com-petitiveness in maritime high technology.

Mr Wiebers, on the occasion of the Ship Fi-nance Forum 2012 you spoke of major chal-lenges for ship financing. This year’s Ship Finance Forum is under the motto “A New Beginning”. How have market conditions for owners and banks changed since 2012? Wiebers: On the whole, the underlying conditions for shipowners and finan- ciers have improved compared with 2012. The global economy is recovering. Many banks have cleaned up their balance sheets and are lending again. Apart from classic bank financing, buyers are increasingly accessing new financing sources (for ex-ample through the capital market or Asian

leasing companies) and well-positioned companies have sufficient access to loans again. However, the industry outlook needs to be seen in a nuanced light and it has not eased for everyone.

How is merchant shipping faring?Wiebers: The situation in merchant shipping remains tense due to the overall low freight rates. In view of the large order book, recov-ery cannot be expected in the medium term. Competitive pressure is growing, particu-larly for small- and medium-sized shipping companies. While large shipping companies purge their fleets of inefficient ships, and in so doing are able to secure their long-term com-petitiveness, their smaller counterparts often lack access to capital needed for such invest-ment projects. Many banks have learnt from past mistakes and now have a lower appetite for risk while applying tougher loan require-ments – especially in merchant shipping.

What about other ship types?Wiebers: In specialist shipping, on the other hand – primarily cruise ships and oil and gas

offshore – the markets are intact, with ade-quate charter-rate levels. Not only operators of special tonnage can look into the future with optimism. The German maritime sup-ply and shipbuilding industry, which is often the technological global market leader in these segments, is also profiting from orders for newbuildings in the cruise and offshore industry. Kf W IPEX-Bank supports this economic trend with customised long-term financing for German maritime exports. The gmec – global maritime environmen-tal congress – is being held as part of SMM 2014. How important are “green” technolo-gies in shipping?

SMM DAILY NEWS SHIP FINANCE

Page 27: Photos: HMC/Michael Zapf The world’s eyes are on Hamburg · Career Market will provide an excellent opportunity for grad - uates and professionals to meet up with hiring companies.

Wiebers: Environmental regulation is increas-ing for shipping operations. In the past, the maritime industry was less regulated in com-parison with land-based industries. There was a need to catch up, which led to emissions control areas and further regulation (such as for ballast water). For banks and shipping companies, it is therefore particularly impor-tant to finance and operate “green” ships that can be utilised worldwide without restriction.

What role does export financing play in opening up sales potential in the offshore oil and gas industry? Wiebers: Vessels for the offshore oil and gas industry are usually large-scale investments, and the availability of financing always has an impact on a purchase decision. To access fi-nancing sources from export countries, some buyers predefine national quotas for procure-ment. In this way the country of origin and the corresponding availability of long-term fi-nancing, along with requirements for quality and pricing, impact procurement decisions. While in other countries like Norway state financial institutions and the maritime sup-ply industry have cooperated successfully for decades, comparative financing possibilities through Kf W IPEX-Bank have only been available for a relatively short time in Germany.

What specific financing possibilities does Kf W IPEX-Bank offer? Wiebers: Kf W IPEX-Bank enhances the competitiveness of the German maritime shipbuilding and supply industry by offer-ing long-term equipment financing to their end customer (shipping companies or con-tractors). This equipment-based financ-ing approach is tailor-made and may be ECA-covered or on a purely commercial basis, depending on the project specifics. The minimum financing volume should be around USD 30 million. Kf W IPEX-Bank’s contribution to the financing is not limited to the German equipment, but is based on the European content. This makes it pos-sible for us to support sales activities of German suppliers despite a German con-tent well below USD 30 million per project (vessel or newbuilding fleet). The loan tenor for equipment financing tranches would be up to 12 years. We have the ca-pacities and know-how to take prominent roles (such as arranging an international financing consortium) or less prominent roles such as a simple participation, which depends on the German and European content. Total investment amounts are usually between USD 50 million and USD 2 billion.

What can shipyards and suppliers do to ob-tain financing from Kf W IPEX-Bank for their customers? Such large-volume projects are always tai-lor-made financings. Suppliers and ship-yards should talk to us as early as possible about new projects so that – if the project is sufficiently sound – we can complement and enhance the offer by signalling our interest in providing financing towards buyers. We also invite buyers (shipping companies and contractors) to discuss potential financing solutions for their up-coming investment projects with German content with us as early as possible. Trans-parency on the sourcing potential of Ger-man equipment for certain vessel types is important. The technical departments of the shipping companies or offshore con-tractors often work closely together with their finance departments. The specifica-tions of a vessel, which are determined in coordination with the shipyard, also deter-mine the availability of additional financ-ing sources, which may be sourced from export-promoting financial institutions from the supply country. German indus-trial associations are currently composing vessel-specific master-makers lists for the maritime industry.

Palfinger Marine – everything under control Austria-based Palfinger Marine, a glo-bal manufacturer of innovative and customised marine, offshore, and wind crane solutions, is presenting its new offshore control system and standing platform at SMM 2014. The multina-tional group sets new standards for sa-fety and working convenience with its innovative solutions for cranes.

More security, less damageThe Offshore Control System (OCS) com-plies with EN13849-1/2 and is designed for offshore cranes on drillships, barges, (oil) platforms, FPSOs, semi-submersibles or similar operations. OCS prevents over-loads by fully monitoring the crane’s geom-etry through numerous security sensors. The safety requirements of EN13852-1 are fulfilled.

An automatic/manual overload pro-tection system (AOPS and MOPS, ac-cording to EN13852) prevents damage to the crane when the hook is attached to a moving object during overboard lifts. The system allows the rope to be pulled out until the overload situation is defused. A slewing sensor disables the AOPS/MOPS when working on board. The winch’s constant tension function provides safe hoisting despite wave motion. The rope is pre-tensioned to prevent movements of the load or rope when hoisting off a moving deck. A spe-cial intelligent system allows this mode to be activated only if certain prerequi-sites are met. A 7-inch colour display and a newly designed Hetronic remote con-trol give the operator feedback about the operating situation.

Providing efficient operationThe Palfinger Marine standing platform is mounted on the crane column and gives the operator an optimal overview over the working area. The control elements are ergonomically arranged and protected by

a cover that guarantees maximum service life and prevents unauthorised operation. A completely new modular design enables additional functions and makes the plat-form compatible with the new Offshore Control System.

New office in HoustonTo additionally support the oil and gas market locally, Pal-finger Marine has just opened its own Houston office and employed Louis LeBour-geois to cover the full Palfin-ger Marine range including marine and offshore cranes,

launch and recovery systems and boats.

Its worldwide services net-work, including spare parts supply, guarantees prompt and professional on-site support. The internationally operating company, which has its regis-tered office in Salzburg, Aus-tria, is part of the publicly listed

Members of the working group Marine Equipment and Systems, part of the Ger-man Engineering Association (VDMA) and formerly known

as German Marine and Off-shore Equipment Industries, met on September 8th in Hamburg, a day before the of-ficial start of SMM.

The more than 150 participants followed with great interest the discussions on the economic forecasts and outlook for the maritime industry in Germany. At the meeting, the group also presented its new name. The industry represented by Marine Equipment and Sys-tems is the world market leader with sales of EUR 11.8 billion and some 68,000 employees in Germany. It is evident that both the global shipbuilding and off-shore raw material and energy markets promise long-term growth, but the maritime sector faces mounting challenges. The markets have shown increasing volatility in recent months, for instance with an impressive surge in ship newbuilding or-ders and subsequent consoli-dation. Swings in the level of incoming orders are becoming more apparent and the cycles ever shorter.

Expanding the leading role in the world marketGerman marine and offshore equipment suppliers regard this development as an opportunity to expand their leading role in the world market. Companies can open up fresh potentials by becoming more flexible. In

sales, problem-solving exper-tise, service and system com-petence across companies, flexibility is indeed the key to innovations and ultimately to the consolidation of global lead-ership for future technologies.Under the moderation of Ham-burg TV personality Herbert Schalthoff, Arnt Vespermann, managing director of Hamburg Südamerikanische Dampf- schifffahrts-Gesellschaft KG (Hamburg), Martin Johanns-mann, CEO of SKF Blohm + Voss Industries GmbH (Ham-burg), and Lüder Hogrefe, managing director of Raythe-on Anschütz GmbH (Kiel) discussed the perspectives for the maritime sector with Uwe Beckmeyer, parliamentary state secretary at Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy and federal govern-ment coordinator for the mari-time industry.

Opportunities in service and retrofitsIt was concluded that there are opportunities for the sec-tor worldwide, particularly in the areas of service and retro-fits. Shipping companies and equipment suppliers are jointly responsible for achieving ship-ping’s aims in a cost-efficient, environmentally friendly way. Legislation must be enforced internationally – something that Germany’s and Europe’s politi-cal decision-makers have been clearly calling for. The industry will be able to attract suitable young talent if it convincingly highlights its reputation as an innovator and the world cham-pion in efficiency by providing technical solutions.

Towards a “green” futuregmec, the global maritime environmental congress, will be held today as part of SMM. Experts will discuss ways of further improving the envi-ronmental footprint of ships. The congress starts at 11:00 in Conference Room Chicago and will end at about 17:30. There is a registration fee.

Ships are the most eco-friend-ly means of transporting car-go. According to the Interna-tional Maritime Organization (IMO), a UN agency, the international shipping indus-try’s contribution to global carbon dioxide emissions is a mere 2.7 per cent. In response to stricter environmental reg-ulations, shipping is going to become even “greener”. More than 60,000 vessels previous-

ly propelled by heavy fuel oil (HFO) must either switch to a low-emission fuel or clean their exhaust gases to avoid stiff fines. Among the availa-

ble alternative fuels, liquefied natural gas (LNG) is favoured by many operators because its SOX emissions are close to zero. In many parts of the

world, ships are being retrofit-ted for LNG propulsion. But questions remain. What will it cost to retrofit a particular ship? How can you tell wheth-er a refit will pay for itself ? And what ship types are best suited for an exhaust gas scrubber?

“Setting the Green Course” is the mottoThese and other questions will be addressed today by the panel of experts at gmec, the global maritime environ-mental congress. Again part of SMM and hosted jointly by Hamburg Messe und Con-gress GmbH (HMC) and Sea-trade Communications Ltd, it will take place on Environ-mental Protection Day under the motto “Setting the Green Course”. >

Global high-speed communicationsIntellian is showing its new Ka-band antennas, including the dual-band compatible Intellian v100GX 3-Axis VSAT communications antenna, as well as the recently un-veiled GX60 terminal. It has been specifically designed to deliver efficient high-speed broadband operation on Inmarsat’s Ka-band Global Xpress™ (GX) service, which is to come into service later this year.

To complement the high-per-formance 65cm Intellian GX60 antenna, the all-new GX below-deck unit (BDU) internally combines the mo-dem with the antenna control unit, Intellian said. This saves considerable time during in-stallation and uses less space than separate elements. The

BDU also includes Wi-Fi to allow wireless connection of various devices on board. Us-ers also benefit from the eight network ports on the BDU, providing a turn key solution making the GX60 a complete communication solution in one compact unit.Intellian is also presenting its latest Fleet Broadband products. These robust sys-tems provide cost-effective, reliable, and secure commu-nications to keep vessels and crew connected. The newest Intellian Fleet Broadband ter-minals include a broad range of IP and networking-related, value-added features such as IP routing, firewall capability and vessel fleet tracking.

Optimarin and Zeppelin sign exclusive partnership agreementOptimarin, a Norwegian ballast water treatment (BWT) specialist, and Ham-burg-based Zeppelin Power Systems, a distributor of drive, propulsion, traction and energy systems, have joined forces to meet growing demand in Germa-ny and Eastern Europe for proven BWT technology.

Under the terms of a new regional agree-ment, signed Monday during a press con-ference in Hamburg, Zeppelin will be-come the exclusive provider of planning, engineering and customisation services for Optimarin’s Ballast System (OBS). The contract covers Germany, Poland, Russia and all CIS countries with the ex-ception of Ukraine.“Our offerings will include individual system components, complete turnkey solutions and comprehensive custom-er service,” said Volker Poßögel, CEO of Zeppelin Power Systems. “We’re convinced that Optimarin’s system is the best solution on the market. This agree-ment guarantees that our customers will be quickly supplied with tailor-made installation solutions to meet the com-ing legal requirements.” Zeppelin Power Systems will carry out all planning and engineering work at its office in Achim, Germany.

Growing demand due to IMO BWT ConventionDemand for BWT solutions is said to be growing ahead of ratification of the IMO’s Ballast Water Management Convention, which industry observers say is imminent. Ratification, they add, will lead to a rush for

market-proven systems, especially consid-ering that only 3,000 of the some 100,000 ships in the SOLAS fleet have so far had compliant BWT system retrofits, according to industry information.“This is a big day for us,” said Optimarin CEO Tore Andersen. “The markets in Ger-

many and Eastern Europe are growing, and with an established partner like Zep-pelin we have the perfect platform to give customers the support they need. At the same time, we’re helping them to avoid the supply and installation bottlenecks that can occur in the industry.”Andersen said the OBS had already been installed on 180 ships worldwide and that more than 120 systems were in the order books. However, he predicts a potential of up to 4,000 system installations for his com-pany due to growing demand. The environ-mentally friendly technology, which uses filtration as pretreatment and high doses of UV radiation to inactivate marine organ-isms, is modular and easy to install in exist-ing or new ships. It has been approved by the IMO and US Coast Guard (AMS) and certified by DNL GL, BV, RMRS and CCS.

Installation bottlenecks expectedEvery year 10 billion tonnes of ballast water are carried by the global fleet and discharged in harbours. Invasive organ-isms, bacteria and pathogens in the ballast water are set free. They not only threaten the environment but also cause damage to health and the economy. Ratification of the IMO convention is expected in 2015; between 35,000 and 40,000 vessels in the existing global fleet and 1,200 newbuilds annually will have to install a BWT sys-tem to meet IMO standards in 2016. This surge may lead to installation bottlenecks if shipowners do not react in time.

DNV GL releases new issue of Maritime Impact magazineThe second edition of DNV GL’s Maritime Impact Magazine shows emerging trends in the shipping industry. The magazine will be available for download at www.dnvgl.com and will also be distributed at SMM 2014.

“The theme for this year’s SMM fair is ‘Keeping the Course’. In the business and regulatory climate we face today, the maritime industry may have to adjust the course. The recognition that some aspects of our business must change has never been so strong, and we can see this in the shift towards alternative fuels and the cen-tral role of energy management,” said Tor E. Svensen, CEO of DNV GL Maritime. The second issue of Maritime Impact in-cludes the following topics:

> size matters – which factors limit a con-tainer ship’s design and how does the shape of a vessel impact its performance

> greener shipping – which power sources will shape the future of the maritime industry

> large vessels – how to store LNG fuel on long-range container ships. GTT, Hanjin and DNV GL are working on new solutions

> new designs – how did DNV GL experts use existing technology to develop a new

vessel that is autonomous and fully battery powered

> propulsion technology – UASC prepares its mega boxers for the use of LNG fuel

> performance management – DNV GL presents new software and a web-based portal that give shipping companies a fast track to an effective performance manage-ment system

> innovation – Wärtsilä finds smart solu-tions to saving space, cutting costs and sim-plifying the installation of LNG-propulsion systems

Optimising ship operationsInterschalt, a software vendor, service provider and producer of VDR (voyage data recorder) systems, will showcase product innovations that have been de-veloped to make shipping more efficient, safer, and more sustainable.

The company will present the vessel moni-toring system Bluetracker and demonstrate the huge cost-cutting potential it offers ship-owners and charterers. StowMan, the new dimension of optimised stowage planning, opens up completely new possibilities of combining strategic decision-making cri- teria from multiple stowage planning options into an optimised stowage plan within a very short time (seconds). The VDR G4[e] meets the latest IMO performance standards. Bluetracker creates the foundation for measures to enhance efficiency. It enables analysis on land and supports the crew di-rectly. Key performance indicators relat-ing to consumption analysis, such as FEI (fuel efficiency index), SFOC (specific fuel oil consumption), and trim and machine

performance, are aggregated and can be tracked very simply using a web browser. Measures to enhance efficiency are derived from the analysis and can be used to slash operating costs. On board, the energy effi-

The port of Hamburg – the beating heart of the metropolisExpansive views and plenty of fresh air and light – few cities offer as many waterfront sights and walking routes as Hamburg does. Whether it be the old fishermen’s houses in the quaint Blankenese neighbourhood, the con-tainer ships gliding along the banks of the Elbe River, or the newly built pro-menades on the Elbe and in HafenCity,

life in Hamburg is closely linked with its port and the sea.

New district by the portOver the past ten years, HafenCity (“Har-bour City”) has been emerging in the heart of the city on a 250-hectare area once used by cargo vessels to unload their freight. Its Sandtorhafen harbour offers

berths for about 25 historic ships. Numer-ous restaurants, cafés and bars, for exam-ple on the plazas known as the Magellan Terraces and Marco Polo Terraces, are inviting places to relax and take a break from SMM business. The spectacular Elbphilharmonie build-ing, on the western tip of the new dis-trict, is HafenCity’s flagship project and

gradually nearing completion. Built on a former warehouse of red brick known as Kaispeicher A, Hamburg’s new, glass landmark rises to a height of 110 metres. Both the locals and Hamburg’s guests can look forward to what will be one of the world’s finest concert halls – topped by a publicly accessible plaza with a magnifi-cent panorama view of the city, port and the river.

Worlds of experience behind red-brick facadesBeautiful red-brick facades, arched bridges and picturesque views character-ise Speicherstadt (“Warehouse City”), Hamburg’s historic warehouse district. Situated between HafenCity and the city centre, Speicherstadt is interspersed with waterways. During a stroll through the cobblestone streets of this protected dis-trict, visitors will discover that Speicher-stadt is still used as a storage place for car-pets, coffee, tea and spices. It is also home to advertising agencies and young Ham-burg businesses along with a number of museums, among them the Speicherstadt Museum, Dialogue in the Dark, where

blind people lead small groups of guests through an exhibition in completely dark-ened rooms, and Miniature Wonderland, with the world’s largest model railway.

Discovering Hamburg by boatA boat ride through the harbour should definitely be included in any visit to Hamburg. Especially to be recommended is a tour on one of the many sightseeing launches, which are small enough to nav-igate Speicherstadt’s canals, water level permitting. For many decades, general cargo vessels dominated shipping and thus the face of the port of Hamburg. Today, many of these ships have fallen victim to cutting torches in dismantling yards. The loading and unloading of ships has become a rare sight on the quays in the eastern and middle areas of the port. Most port operations now take place further down the Elbe, where huge con-tainer ships moor at terminals largely in-accessible to the public. The scene there is one of giant crane systems in a sea of colourful containers stacked high on top of one another. A human workforce is hardly to be seen. Rickmer Rickmers and Cap San Diego

SMM DAILY NEWS THINGS TO DO AFTER THE FAIR

Stroll and enjoy the harbour’s edge At the waterfront between Baumwall and St Pauli Landungsbrücken, you can see the colourfully flagged sailing and motor yachts in the City Sporthafen, where the bright red restaurant ship Feuerschiff is moored. Right next to the Überseebrücke, where large pas-senger ships formerly docked, the general cargo vessel Cap San Diego, built in 1961, is well worth visiting. The ship is the world’s last seaworthy freighter museum of its size. The berth of the lavishly restored barque Rickmer Rickmers is diagonally opposite. This real Cape Horn veteran can also be publicly viewed from stern to wheelhouse. From here, it’s just a short walk to the Por-tuguese quarter with its many fish restau-rants and bars. Further down the Elbe River you could take a stroll along the jetties of the St Pauli Landungsbrücken. This is the traffic hub for port ferries, Elbe ferries and excur-sion boats. You might want to take a har-bour tour on one of the launches that are so typical of Hamburg. For the price of a regular bus ticket, the port ferry will take you straight to the lovely Elbe beach at Oevelgönne. But if you tend to feel a little

queasy on the water, why not get yourself with a fish sandwich and retire to the up-per level of the Landungsbrücken, where you’ll have an excellent view of the passing ships and the hustle and bustle of the ship-

yards on the other side of the Elbe. During the summer you can watch the ships and stick your feet in to the sand, as numerous beach clubs are located here at Landungs-brücken.

Most port operations now take place at the modern container terminals
