MS&D conference successfully integrated into SMM 2012“Integration of MS&D (interna-tional conference on maritime security and defence) into SMM, the world’s leading mari-time industry fair, was the right step at the right time,” said
Bernd Aufderheide, president and CEO of Hamburg Messe und Congress (HMC). The high-ly focused one-and-a-half day programme covered strategic, economic and political issues.
A main reason for merging MS&D with SMM was the ex-panded range of exhibits for SMM. “The inclusion of MS&D has added a new, attractive, forward-looking area to SMM.
It has proven itself straight-away,” Aufderheide remarked. Heinz Schulte, editor in chief of DVV Media / Griephan, partner for the event along with the German Maritime

Astrium Services announced at SMM that a new division of the company, Astrium Services Busi-ness Communications, would be a provider in the maritime sat-ellite communications industry. The division combines the mari-time communications prow-ess of Vizada and its affiliate Marlink, following their acqui-sition by Astrium in December 2011.
Astrium Services is the “satel-lite services” unit of Astrium and comprises four business divisions: Business Communi-cations, Government Commu-nications, Satcom Systems & So-lutions and GEO-Information Services. The Vizada Group, including its affiliates such as Marlink, Vizada Networks,
TDcom, etc., joins Astrium Services to form a leading pro-vider in fully managed satellite services with a global reach in diverse industry sectors. The new Astrium Services Business Communications en-tity will host all commercial satcom activities of Astrium Services, serving three main markets: maritime, enterprises and aero. In the maritime mar-ket, the company will continue providing services in the same successful structure as today – indirectly through the existing, well-established service pro-vider channel, whereas Marlink will remain an independent commercial organisation fo-cusing on maritime end cus-tomers. This clear distribution strategy ensures that partners
and customers in the maritime transport, offshore, oil and gas and passenger/cruise vessel sectors benefit from the most extensive multi-technology service portfolio, combining the complete range of satellite connectivity services in L, C, Ku and Ka-band with the larg-est range of innovative solu-tions optimised for the specific customer requirements of each sector. As a consequent step, the
Vizada Group will rebrand into Astrium over the coming months beginning in October 2012, capitalising on the lead-ership and brand recognition of Astrium. The Marlink brand will remain unchanged.

MS&D flagship moored at Überseebrücke pierThe Maritime Security and Defence (MS&D) conference may have ended on Wednesday, but its flagship, the British frigate HMS Argyll, will remain in Ham-burg’s harbour until Sunday. The 133m-long, Type 23 (Duke-class) frigate is moored at the Überseebrücke pier and will be open to tours on Friday and Sat-urday from 10am to 3pm. On Thursday evening, a festive Beating Retreat cere-mony was held, during which the Union Jack was lowered to the accompaniment of a British music corps. The ship, under the command of Capt Tim Neild and with 180 men and women on board, will leave Hamburg on Sunday for Devonport in Southern England.
Institute (DMI), agreed. “It was a great opportunity that we went alongside MS&D at SMM. We should keep to this policy of holding MS&D on the occasion of SMM,” he said. With some 250 international participants, MS&D 2012 cov-ered current key issues in the maritime sector in three pan-els: rapid changes in the mari-time environment, security of the maritime logistic chains and future maritime capabili-ties in the technical, strategic and political areas.“The conference far exceeded my expectations in terms of the quality of presentations, the technical expertise and the lively discussions with very knowledgeable participants,” said MS&D Chairman Hans-Joachim Stricker, vice admiral (ret) of the German Navy and DMI president.
“We have a highly interested au-dience here,” added the second MS&D chairman, Ulrich Otto, rear admiral (ret) and DMI vice-president.Fourteen military delegations from Asia, Africa, Europe and South America were among the international MS&D par-ticipants. Conference visitors lauded the “complete pack-age” of MS&D and SMM, with the exhibition practically showing the hardware while the conference presented the software.“MS&D was just the right forum for international net-working of industrial com-panies, navies and academic institutions,” said Stricker in summary. Exhibitors in MS&D thematic areas assessed their presence at SMM as quite worthwhile. “We had visits from very important parliamentary representatives,
state secretaries and naval del-egations right on the first day of SMM,” noted Jörg Ahrens, sales director at the Bremen-based Lürssen shipyard, which is one of the leading manufacturers both of naval ships and of large luxury yachts. Norbert Kahl, CEO of SMM newcomer Kahl Sicherheit Consulting, said, “We received very positive feedback. We even had a visit from the Bra-zilian Navy.” Sven Fürus, whose company Lex Gabinia exhibited a protec-tive system using NATO razor wire, said, “We got a very good response.” Daniel Andersen of the Dan-ish security consulting compa-ny Citadel Solutions, present-ing its programme of security and hijack survival training at SMM, rated the integration of MS&D into SMM as “highly positive”.

Shippers need to prove en-ergy efficiency and environ-mental performance to their clients. Hamburg Süd and Ger-manischer Lloyd (GL) have de-veloped a data management system to systematically cap-ture all environmentally rel-evant ship operation informa-tion. The GL EmissionManager was presented by the two companies at the GL stand during SMM.
The software is designed to systemise and structure ship-to-shore reports that are tra-ditionally recorded in less co-ordinated ways. Operational and voyage-related data such as noon, departure, arrival and stoppage reports are recorded and analysed, and environ-mental information on factors such as fuel, emissions to air, garbage, sludge, ballast water and chemicals is extracted. In 2011, the shipping company Hamburg Süd and classification society GL agreed to develop the innovative data manage-ment system. A first prototype was released in April 2012.Today, the system consists of two parts: a software compo-nent that collects information on board and takes over all tra-ditional ship-to-shore reporting, and a GL Green Server, where
the data is logged, analysed and reported to the ship manager, ship operator and other parties involved. In addition, the GL Green Server forwards the data to in-house databases at Ham-burg Süd.Hamburg Süd expects imple-mentation of the new soft-
ware system to yield consider-able benefits, particularly the ability to assess overall fleet performance and CO2 emis-sions, and to break down the overall output into individual values such as emissions per cargo on a specific transport.Hamburg Süd plans to roll out
the GL EmissionManager sys-tem on its entire container ship fleet. The product was launched at this year’s SMM and is sched-uled to be commercially avail-able in early 2013.

Innovative design suite for all ship typesAveva has been exhibiting at SMM for 45 years. This year, the England-based company is showing how its marine portfolio has developed since the early days of CADCentre and Tribon.
The addition of Aveva’s 3D en-gineering solutions to Tribon has added powerful functions for outfitting design, equip-ment integration and global collaborative shipbuilding. These capabilities, the compa-ny says, make Aveva Marine the most efficient software for the
engineering and design of ship and offshore structures, design management, and the gen-eration of accurate production information. It has been used to design all types of ships, from small support vessels to complex cruise ships as well as sophisticated FPSOs and LNG tankers. The powerful integrated engi-neering and design approach of Aveva Marine supports the iterative design process of a ship and allows engineers and designers in all disci-plines and at multiple sites to
work concurrently on a sin-gle model database, to create, develop, manage and exploit engineering and design data in the most productive way
to eliminate rework during construction of a ship.

The new TSS/BMS4 pneumatic system for level measurement Photo: APi Marine ApS
Denmark-based API Marine, a specialist in complete cargo control and automation sys-tems for tankers and gas car-riers, presents a new ballast level measurement system at this year’s SMM.
The new TSS/BMS4 is the next generation of electro-pneumatic systems for level,
density and draught meas-urements. Featuring an im-proved compact modular design, enhanced capabilities and reduced costs, it is de-signed to measure the level in ballast and service tanks, car-go density in cargo tanks and the vessel’s draught. The sys-tem can also be used for level and density measurement in
onshore storage tanks. The principle of the TSS/BMS4 is based on periodic purging of compressed air from the system to the tank bottom through an air tube and measurement of the set-tled air pressure in the tube. For draught measurement, the air tube is led out to the bottom of the vessel. The density measurement prin-ciple of the system is based on measuring the pressure difference in two air tubes mounted in the tank.

According to London-based Clarkson Research, invest-ment in new ships totalled some USD 90 billion last year. Although far less than in the record-setting year of 2007, it is still an enormous sum that shipping companies cannot manage by themselves.
As both equity capital from in-vestors and debt capital from banks are increasingly difficult to obtain, ship financing is one of the main topics at SMM – not only at the SMM Ship Fi-nance Forum, held on Monday on the eve of the trade fair, but also every day on the SMM fair-ground. “We believe the crisis in the industry to be a temporary phenomenon, as it has always been in the past,“ Ingmar Lo-
ges, head of Shipping Interna-tional at Hamburg-based HSH Nordbank AG, told SMM Daily
News. “We remain confident that shipping’s long-term fu-ture prospects due to globalisa-
tion are intact. Therefore we’re expressly committed to our role as a long-term, reliable partner of the maritime industry.” At a press conference last week, HSH Nordbank announced that it had no intention of withdrawing from the ship fi-nancing business – even if the shipping crisis dragged on and hit the bank harder than ex-pected.“Partly because of the contin-ued high price of oil and weak-ness of the euro, we believe we won’t see the bottom of the industry cycle for another 12 to 18 months,” Loges remarked. “So we’re less optimistic than at the beginning of the year.” He said he now expected a recov-ery in cargo rates, time charter rates and ship prices no sooner than the end of 2013.

Vulkan Couplings has extend-ed the range of enhanced-per-formance ACOTEC couplings with the RATO R+ version. The German transmission technol-ogy specialist is launching the initial sizes of the coupling at SMM 2012: 4A (TkN: 137.0 – 176.0 kNm) and 3E (TkN: 100.0 – 125.0 kNm).
Development of the new RATO R+ was focused primarily on the coupling’s centrepiece: the elastomer. Inno-vative research on compounds and highly specialised vulcanisation tech-nology facilitated the development of an elastomer with con-siderably higher power density, according to Vul-kan Couplings. The ACOTEC compound distinguishes itself
from other, conventionally used materials not only through the enhanced tensile and tear strength and increased ultimate
elongation, but also through a high thermal resistance and lesser ageing effects. Vulkan Couplings says it guarantees a high level of process stability for the new elastomer from the
aspects of manufacturing and further processing because
it involves in-house pro-duction processes, the
quality of which is subject to constant control.

Since its invention by Schottel’s founder Josef Becker 60 years ago, the rudder propeller has been a core product in Schottel’s product range. At SMM, Germa-ny’s Schottel Group presents its latest innovation.
Schottel Rim Thruster (SRT) on displayA newly developed rim thrust-er extends the product portfo-lio. The SRT is an electrically driven system without a gear-box and propeller shaft. The stator of the electric motor is mounted on the outer part of a tunnel. Blades are attached to the inside of the rotor. Ac-cording to Schottel, the SRT is a drive propulsion system capable of transmitting the electric power directly into propulsion without transmis-sion losses and noise caused by a gearbox. The optimised hydrodynamic design with the blades inside the tunnel re-duces cavitation considerably. This low-noise, low-vibration drive is especially important on ships that often operate in
DP mode or require special comfort. The SRT comes in four sizes (200 – 800 kW).
Schottel controllable pitch propeller (SCP) Another attraction at the Schottel stand is an original Schottel controllable pitch propeller, SCP 084/5-XW, meant for an offshore patrol vessel (OPV) of the Mauritius National Coast Guard. With two 4,300 kW main drives and propeller diameters of 2.75m, the ship has a maxi-mum speed of 21kn. For ap-plications requiring a light-weight construction along with high power, e.g. military vessels or yachts, Schottel has extended its product range to include a five-blade variant. It is based on the proven design principles of the standard sys-tems and offers a high power density and weight reduction of up to 15 per cent while re-taining the accustomed reli-ability and robustness.Schottel SCP controllable pitch propeller systems of the 5-X se-
ries are available in sizes from SCP 046 5-XG to SCP 154 5-XG with power ratings from 1,000 to 20,000 kW. For all sizes, an optional version with feather-ing capability is available.
New generation of azi-muth thrustersSchottel introduced the new generation of SRP 4000 rudder propellers and twin propellers (STP) at SMM 2010. Now the SRP and STP 3000 are available along with the newly designed SCD 4000 and 5000 combi drive electric azimuth thrusters. They are characterised mainly
by their compact and modu-lar form, significantly reduced weight (about 20 per cent), noise-optimised gearbox, inte-grated steering hydraulics and decreased oil charge. All have been designed for a large range of possible input speeds. The SRP 3000 has nearly the same dimensions and weight as its predecessor but a considera-bly higher input power of up to 2,100 KW (previous type: 1,980 kW) and a bollard pull of 60 tonnes as a tug application

Bindemann is presenting the new company NG3 at SMM. NG3 is dedicated to the devel-opment of innovative solutions aimed at improving the energy efficiency and environmental footprint of the shipping and harbour industries. its activities will focus on exploitation of its PLUG shore connection tech-nology. PLUG is based on the unique concept of a self-mat-ing /de-mating connector and makes shore power connec-tion a press-button operation. Christian Bindemann Marine Consulting, which has signed an exclusive agent agreement with NG3, highlights such ad-vantages as speed of opera-tion and hence reduction of onboard generator sets, safety (no direct handling of high-volt-age connector and cables) and compactness (no impact on shipside payload volume, neg-ligible quayside footprint).

hull design boosts fuel economy of ultra-large container shipsA collaboration involving APL, Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) and DNV has resulted in a hull design that will make APL’s ten new ultra-large container ships some 20 per cent more fuel ef-ficient per TEU compared with existing designs.
The design has been optimised for an operating profile on the Far East to Europe trade route involving nine speed and draught combinations. The in-stalled propulsive power could be reduced by about 16 per cent compared with the initial hull form, optimised for one draught speed condition. The first of the 13,800-TEU ships is under construction at HHI and will be delivered next year. The resulting fuel savings will be worth about USD 3 million per ship per year to APL, a glo-bal container shipping business and wholly owned subsidiary of Singapore-based Neptune Orient Lines (NOL).“In the current challenging market environment, it is ex-tremely important for APL to
introduce efficient and flexible container ships, which help us to reduce slot costs. These ships will be the most fuel-efficient ships ever built for Asia-Europe container trade,” said Cedric Foo, Group depu-ty president and CFO of NOL. “APL has decided to advance the delivery of the newbuild-ings, which were ordered in 2011, using their superior fuel efficiency to make a contribu-tion to cutting emissions as soon as possible.”Container ships traditionally spend much of their time oper-ating at “off-design” conditions, which increase hull resistance and reduce propeller and en-gine efficiency. In this case, the ships operate at speeds typically ranging from 15 to 19.5 knots, and with a maximum speed of about 23 knots. With the aid of sophisticated software and virtual sea trials, the three part-ners were able to analyse the proposed trading pattern of the ships and optimise accordingly. “This is a new way of coop-eration between the partners
in a newbuilding project,” ex-plained Gyung-Jin Ha, execu-tive vice president of the Basic Design Office in the Shipbuild-ing Division of HHI. “Due to a concentrated and professional effort from all three parties within their respective roles, we managed not only to keep the tight design schedule, but also to unlock an amazing potential for fuel savings.” “For design optimisation, an in-novative methodology has been deployed. Ideas and further in-novation have been made more specific based on the DNV
Quantum concept launched in 2010. We are pleased to see that this is utilised by HHI and APL for real designs now,” said Tor Svensen, president of DNV Maritime and Oil & Gas. “This is the way of the future. Finan-cial and environmental per-formance demands more so-phistication, and DNV is ready with the technology, the people and the enthusiasm to ensure that shipowners get the best re-sults possible.”

In the spotlight on wiskaAt SMM, Wiska, a German provider of electrical installa-tions, is presenting its light-ing range, which has been extended over the past few years. In addition to octagonal Wiska searchlights, the portfolio comprises floodlights and lighting fixtures with a range of lamps including LED for lighting on and below deck.
Wiska manufactures electrical equipment and lighting products for the shipbuilding and diverse industries. The product spectrum includes a comprehen-sive range of maritime lighting such as search-lights, floodlights and lighting fixtures, as well as electrical instal-lation material – for example, cable glands, sockets, junction box-es and switches.Wiska CCTV, a subsidiary of Wiska, offers safety and security sys-tems for ships such as digital
CCTV technology and further ISPS solutions. Wiska operates its own research and develop-
ment facilities, which focus on delivering innovative solutions “from a single source” and
subsequent manufacturing in the factory. In the field of camera surveil-
lance, Wiska is showing a further development: its flameproof, zone-1 camera together with a pan/tilt unit. As with all CCTV products, the vibration-proof and EMC-tested IP 68 cam-era can be fully inte-grated in the onboard network and combined with searchlights and all other components from the company. The maritime range is completed by the com-prehensive components for electrical installa-tion, such as junction boxes, reefer container sockets, cable glands and switches.Since June 2012, the Wiska CCTV camera system has been type-approved by the classi-fication society Germa-nischer Lloyd.

The Stauff ACT clamp by Wal-ter Stauffenberg GmbH & Co KG is a new development for the installation of stainless steel pipework.
Drawing on more than 50 years of experience, the Germany-based company is a developer, manufacturer and supplier of pipework equipment and hy-draulic components under the brand name Stauff. Its new Stauff ACT clamp offers effi-cient protection against crevice corrosion on pipework, for ex-ample in offshore oil and gas exploration and processing. Walter Stauffenberg said that the clamp’s design – based on tried and tested Stauff clamps of the German standard DIN
3015 – offered reduced instal-lation time and long-term cost savings thanks to extended service intervals. The Stauff ACT clamp was subject to stringent testing at
in-house laboratories during its development, after which it underwent long-term field tests on an oil rig in the Dutch sec-tor of the North Sea. The test results were independently as-
sessed by the Centre for Corro-sion Technology at England’s Sheffield Hallam University, which confirmed the anti-cor-rosion properties of the Stauff ACT clamp. The clamp body is made of flame-retardant PPV0 plastic material (tested and V0 clas-sified according to UL 94). Its design is compliant with the Norwegian offshore standard NORSOK Z-010 (Revision 3) for tubing installation and available in the most com-monly used metric and im-perial pipe diameters from 6mm to 25.4mm (1/4 inch to 1 inch).
