In Connecticut, Morrow built her reputation as a portrait photographer for more than two decades serving families, high-school seniors, and other portrait clients. By 2008, however, changes in the marketplace caused Morrow to look at ways to grow her business. “I noticed my long-term clients were complaining about their photos, all the digital files and closets full of photographs,” she explains. At the time, she was not aware of the Association of Professional Photo Organizers (APPO), and began using her own expertise to organize client photos, using a Kodak Picture Saver scanner. “I understand my expertise in photo sorting/editing and passion for photography, so I began a relationship with one of my clients to beta test organizing her photos. I was doing minor scanning, because most of her photos weren’t digital.” That was four years ago and Morrow continues to help the client to this day. Successful photographers are survivors, and Susan Morrow is no different. InConnecticut, Morrow built her reputation as a portrait photographer for morethan two decades serving families, high-schoolseniors, and other portrait clients. By 2008, however, changes in the marketplace caused Morrow to look atways to grow her business.

“I noticed my long-term clients were complainingabout their photos, all the digital files and closetsfull of photographs,” she explains. At the time, shewas not aware of the Association of ProfessionalPhoto Organizers (APPO), and began using herown expertise to organize client photos, using aKodak Picture Saver scanner. “I understand myexpertise in photo sorting/editing and passion forphotography, so I began a relationship with oneof my clients to beta test organizing her photos. I was doing minor scanning, because most of her photos weren’t digital.” That was four years ago and Morrow continues to help the client to this day.

“I became an APPO member, and realized I needed to be more involved in [photoscanning],” she said. “I continued my photography relationships, and some of thepeople I am organizing for have also become portrait customers.”

Morrow contends pro photographers who get into photo organizing have to becomecomfortable with the idea of mixing their own professional images with a customer’ssnapshots.

“Ten years ago, Kodak was telling the labs that all [pro photography] wouldeventually be viewed with personal photos in hybrid formats: I have a several clients, whose books and slideshows, feature my photos with their personal photos. Theyrespect my work, but their story includes my work with their photos.”

Co-mingling of professional portraits and customer/amateur photos is important toher success she says, adding this is grounded in realistic business sense. This doesnot mean, however, Morrow does not support copyright, just a realization 21stcentury business models can be different. She is a member of the ProfessionalPhotographers of America and appreciates and upholds the U.S. copyright laws forphotographers.

“Her yearly ‘Best of ‘ books havegrown to my photographingmany of their life events such asparties, pets, family and morebooks to capture these events,”she says.

Soon other clients wereinterested. Along the way, otherclients and word of mouth haveincreased Morrow’s photoorganizing client base.

“I am, however, also realistic,” she explains. “It is my job as a professionalphotographer to charge what I need to be paid to do my job, because I cannot controlwhat happens to my images once they are in a client’s hands. My clients areeducated on the copyright laws and most respect them, but not all will.

“The most important relationships I have now are with clients who have the incomeand don’t have the time to organize their family photography. I have built arelationship as their photography expert, who can help them tell their photographicstories. Since adding photo organizing to her business, Morrow estimates more thanhalf of her volume today is photo organizing and she is beginning to focus on biggerprojects. It has also helped Morrow maintain the integrity of her work. In her area, many photographers compete on price and giving out of digital files; SwickPix candifferentiate itself - and maintain margins - by providing a wider array of valuableservices for their clients.

“Many of my clients have me in their life every week. They are seeing the addedvalue that my expertise can bring for camera and photoshop tutorials, photoorganizing and professional photography,” she say. “There is a belief out therepeople can just buy the technology and software and do this themselves. That’swhat we’re up against. I have created a smaller world for myself to be true to what Ido. I am busier than I have been in a long time.”

Photo scanning and organizing have opened a range services beyond capturingphotos. For Susan Morrow, photo scanning and organizing have been the key tocontinued success for SwickPix. “My business model is working and I am looking forteam players interested in joining the SwickPix model.”
