Kiewit used seven high capacityLiebherr tower cranes

San Francisco, California USA — The 1.3-billion dollar Benicia-Martinez bridge project is a high-level, long-span passenger vehicle bridge. Located north of San Francisco, California, the 1.7-mile long bridge has five lanes, 20 spans and 11 pier footings.

Contractor Kiewit Pacific Company used seven Liebherr tower cranes: (5) 550 EC-H 40 and (2) 630 EC-H 40. The cranes were purchased or leased from Morrow Equipment Co., L.L.C. of Salem Oregon.

The project, also known as the George Miller Jr Memorial bridge, opened for northbound traffic in August 2007 alleviating the existing parallel I-680 bridge of projected traffic congestion.

A unique design feature includes the use of high-performance, light-weight concrete in the superstructure to reduce the bridge’s mass and seismic demand.

Miami, Florida USA — The years 2005 through 2007 saw booming growth in southern Florida. The growth was most evident in the dozens of residential towers being built in anticipation of the demand for luxury condos by retiring “Baby-Boomers.” Metropolitan Miami and other coastal properties of Dade county were host to countless construction sites manned by tower cranes.

During this boom, Morrow had up to 75 cranes working in the greater Miami area.

Liebherr 200 HC, 316 EC-H 12, 290 HC and 420 EC-H 16 hammerheads were ideal for the type of construction employed. Typically in freestanding or tied-to-the building configuration, the range of capacity and hook reach of these cranes met the project requirements perfectly.

Metro Industrial Contractinghistoric Ford Rouge Plant

Dearborn Michigan USALiebherr 1800 C

Dearborn, Michigan USA — One of the largest tower cranes in North America, a Liebherr 1800 C, was recently on a historic job site in Dearborn, Michigan USA. The Rouge Plant, built in the 1920’s by auto magnate Henry Ford, was undergoing a major rebuild. Part of the rebuild project included the replacement of the “C” blast furnace. The Liebherr 1800 C played a significant role in the furnace upgrade.

Initially, the tower crane assisted in the demolition phase of the more than 50-year-old steel furnace. Once the teardown was completed, the 1800 C was used to erect a new furnace fitted with the latest in steel-making technology. While Ford no longer owns the steel facilities at the Rouge, production continues to this day. SeverStal North America purchased the steel operations a few years ago and invested US$300 million to upgrade the furnace.

Graycor, the project general contractor and Metro Industrial Contracting selected the 1800 C from Morrow Equipment because of the crane’s ability to adapt to the specific requirements of the Dearborn project. Configured with a hook height of 270 feet (82m) and a 218-ft (66m) jib, the 66-ton (60t) tower crane was well suited to the tight work area adjacent to the furnace.

The project was completed the end of October 2007. The “C” blast furnace was off line for only 100 days during the demolition-replacement process. This ambitious construction schedule, the result of 18 months of planning, was accomplished through the successful coordination of skilled personnel and high-capacity lifting equipment, like the Liebherr 1800 C from Morrow.

Arlington, Texas USA — The NFL Dallas Cowboys Stadium project in Arlington, Texas used six Liebherr 630 EC-H 40 Litronic horizontal jib tower cranes. These high capacity, uniquely efficient Liebherr tower cranes leased from Morrow Equipment played significant roles in the initial phase of construction. The 630 EC-H 40 cranes provided full job site coverage for concrete placement, setting of precast elements and general material handling.

This 1-billion dollar project is without peer in the recent wave of sports complex construction projects in North America.

Morrow has also supplied tower cranes for a number of sports complex projects including the NFL Baltimore Ravens stadium, MLB Seattle Mariners Safeco Field, NBA Portland Trailblazers Rose Garden arena, and others.

Chicago Illinois USALiebherr 420 EC-H 16 tower cranes

Both Liebherr 420 EC-H 16 tower cranes are configuredas inside or bottom climbing units; an economical alternative when placing cranes on extreme tall structures.

Chicago, Illinois USA — The Trump International Hotel and Tower, named for famed real estate developer Donald Trump, is currently under construction at 401 N. Wabash Avenue in Chicago, Illinois. Upon completion, it will be the second tallest building in Chicago behind the Sears Tower.

The Trump International Hotel and Tower will be 1,362 feet (415m) tall and contain 96 floors for various uses. A hotel will occupy the lower levels of the building, while office space and residential units will be available on the upper levels.

Trump Tower, contractor, James McHugh Construction Co., leased two Liebherr 420 EC-H 16 tower cranes. Both cranes are installed in bottom climbing configurations.

One crane had an initial hook height of 219 feet and an estimated final height of 1,236 ft. It has a hook reach of 131 feet. The second crane’s initial hook height was 257 ft and will top out at 1,290 feet. This crane has a jib reach of 164 feet.

The cranes’ primary function is to assist in concrete placement. They have been positioned to provide concrete pours wherever required with speed, ease and accuracy.

Tacoma, Washington USALiebherr 550 HC

St Johns, Newfoundland, Canada — The Hibernia oil platform was the largest and most complex of its type ever constructed. The NODECO consortium received the 2-billion dollar project to design and construct the gravity base structure (GBS), something never done before.

Construction of the GBS began in dry dock at the Bull Arm site near St Johns using four Liebherr 550 HC and four 132 EC-H 8 tower cranes. Later, the floating GBS was finished using the 550 HCs. The cranes were used to handle slipforms, rebar, general building material and some concrete work on the 4-year project.

The completed GBS was constructed of over 500,000 tons of concrete and 100,000 tons of rebar.

Seattle, Washington USA — Construction on Puget Sound’s second Tacoma Narrows bridge began in October 2002. The $615-million 3.4-mile long span suspension bridge was the first constructed in the US in nearly 40 years. It is 78 feet wide with two massive 510-ft towers.

The project, completed in mid 2007, was a joint venture of Kiewit Pacific and Bechtel. A Liebherr 550 HC from Morrow was positioned atop one of the towers initially to construct the tower and then to assist in material and concrete placement on the adjacent traffic lanes.

Cape Girardeau, Missouri USA — The cable-stayed Bill Emerson Memorial bridge was constructed over a three-year period across the Mississippi River at Cape Girardeau, Missouri.

Contractor Traylor Bros. Construction Co. selected tower cranes to construct the 365-ft tall pylons that would eventually support the load of the bridge deck by means of massive cables. The two pylons were topped with tower cranes supplied by Morrow. The Liebherr 290 HC and 450 C played vital roles during the construction of the bridge.

The 1,300-ft long traffic bridge cost an estimated 100-million dollars upon completion.

Grapevine, Texas USA — The 515-million dollar Graylord Texan Resort project near Lake Grapevine, Texas was contracted by Centex Construction Group of nearby Dallas.

Morrow brought in 6 new Liebherr 420 EC-H 16 tower cranes to build the elaborate 2.4-million-sq-ft resort that included 1,500 hotel rooms and a 790,000-sq-ft convention hall. The facilities also housed retail space, restaurants and a 4.5-acre climate-controlled atrium.

The all-electric Liebherr tower cranes proved to be an economical and versatile a choice for Centex. The cranes assisted in placing concrete and moving framework plus handling of various construction materials.
