QUESTION: In a match play event Peter is playing Angus. Angus has relief from an Abnormal Ground Condition on a fairway. He carefully marked his reference point with a tee and determined his relief area with his driver. He dropped his ball and the ball hit the ground in the relief area and stayed in it. Angus played his shot from where his ball had come to rest. Immediately Peter, his opponent, said "you dropped your ball from shoulder height, my hole I believe". Which is correct? a. Angus loses the hole. b. No penalty to Angus . c. One stroke penalty to Angus. d. Two strokes penalty to Angus.

Vale Ian Grant McDonnell It was with much sadness that Members learned last week of the death of yet another of our valued and respected Members, Ian (Macca) McDonnel at the age of 73. Ian had been a Member of the Club for 27 years, having joined on 1st July 1991. Due to illness, Ian was unable to play in recent months but prior to that had been a regular player in weekend and weekday competitions. He was particularly enthusiastic (some might say passionate is a more appropriate word) about his participation in Friday Club competitions with his mates and he had been a member of the Committee of that Club. Ian was a very competitive golfer who, on his day, liked nothing more than to strike the ball a couple of hundred metres down the fairway. He won the Founders Cup in 1997 which is a long standing trophy awarded to the player with the best total net score over the January and February Medal Competitions. Ian is survived by his wife, Pam and family, and we extend our sincere condolences to all who knew and loved him. Brian Cummins Welfare Coordinator

FROM THE COURSE

The weather over the past month has been fantastic with very little wind and plenty of mild sunny days. After a very wet March with over 210mm of rain, April/May has been very dry with only 18mm. This week has had some spectacular sunrises, some of the best I have seen. Vandalism on the course has been continuous over the past few months with many thousands of dollars in damage. The greens have been dug up on regular occasions, rakes are constantly being destroyed, flags and tee markers stolen and signs of parties and drinking with rubbish and damage being left behind. If members see anything unusual or people doing things they shouldn’t be please report it; these problems are becoming more regular and the cost to the club is substantial and it affects the playing

surfaces. Preparations for the new dam project are almost complete with many trees removed from the 8th & 9th holes and the old shed site tidied up of tree stumps and other material. Fencing and barriers will be installed soon to allow for access for trucks and machinery and to ensure safety. We are currently doing a number of repairs to irrigation valves and tracing irrigation wiring to ensure we can isolate areas and reduce damage risk to irrigation lines.

RULES WITH GEORGE

ANSWER: c. is correct. Rule 14.3b (3), in the Full Rules of Golf, applies. Because he dropped from shoulder height, Angus had dropped in a wrong way although his ball ended in a correct place( The Relief Area). He was entitled to drop again correctly without penalty, but must do this before playing a stroke at the ball wrongly dropped. The same penalty of one stroke applies both in stroke play and match play.

MASTERS PENNANTS

First round of the Masters Pennants and we were on unfamiliar territory at Roseville, tight with lots of tall brown and green things we didn’t recognise. “Never underestimate your opponent, especially at home” and so it proved. We welcomed back JB and Sean Lee who impressed with strong wins. Also welcome to Andrew Daddo who played at number 8 in his first outing. After 9 holes it was touch and go with Roseville leading three of the eight matches. Duffy was ready to give up golf forever at 4 down but Ken Dewell coaxed him back from the ledge and Duffy made a superb comeback to win 2 up. Tony Cooper was solid and also won. Ian Brown and Tony H played 1 and 2, I played their club champ. Both our opponents sank putts from the next suburb but we did enough for two halves, my highlight being a skanky chip in from a dead position on pine bark in the bush on the 16th. So, a solid win 10-5. Thanks to Ross, Ken, Doug, Glen and Les for coming out. Thanks also to Mick Snell who found a set of yardage notes he’d paced out himself years ago. It was a big help, especially on the greens

Next week we’re at Bayview 11 am, if you want to see the big names of Knox, Bockman and Campbell

come out and support us.

FROM THE JUNIORS

When only one week of the school holidays was done and dusted I was pleased to announce the following results already from our talented juniors. Some of our juniors started their holidays early playing various events in QLD. Jack Davies represented us at the Australian Junior Age Division Championships at Royal Pines GC, while the result wasn't what he wanted, he still had fun on a championship golf layout. Noah Komulainen won B Grade Pacific Junior Open - and had the best scratch score in U13 division which automatically qualifies him for the Greg Norman Junior Masters later in the year. Kai Komulainen was also representing Long Reef at the biggest Junior Tournament in the country - the Australian Boys Amateur Championship - which was held at Southport GC. The 156-man field was capped to a handicap of 2.1, showing the top calibre of junior golf we have across the country at present. Kai exceeded all expectations in his first big Junior event, having rounds of 75,71,72,73 to finish T26 overall and to win the Australian Boys U14 Amateur Championship - by 7 shots, a huge achievement Kai - well done! Now on to the Jack Newton 2 Day Ballina Junior Masters where we had 6 of our Juniors competing. Little Millie Komulainen made it back-to-back JNJG JM victories with a win in the U11 girls - with scores of 88,95. Noah (84,81), Mitch (89,84), Jack (79,81) and Cian (78,78) all had solid tournaments. Finally, Kai Komulainen continued his fine form from the week before, and like sister Millie, made it back-to- back victories with a 2 shot win in the 12/13 boys and T12 finish overall.

JNJG Illawarra Junior Masters We had 8 representatives in this event, which is great to see! Again, some good golf was played by the majority. Kai and Millie nearly made it a trifecta in wins for them each, narrowly coming runners up by 1 shot in their respective age divisions. Jack Davies bounced back from a poor start Day 1 for a great second round with a 4 over par nett 66 to finish the event. Mitch Jones played well on the second round as well.

Harry McKerihan was again very solid for the two rounds, playing consistent golf. Just want to quickly congratulate all the kids for the hard work they are beginning to put in, it is really showing in all your results and it’s great to see so many of you enjoying your golf. It’s quite humbling to get comments from parents at other clubs when I do go out to watch these tournaments saying how

well-mannered you are on the golf course.

GOLBURN VISIT

We had 26 Goulburn members come up for the biannual visit last weekend. As always the away team seem to go a little too hard on the Saturday night, while Long Reef players are a tucked up in bed by 11pm. The result was a comprehensive Long Reef win 11 to 3 and the Dr McCarthy Shield. The Rae Harvey trophy was won with a good combined score of 87 by Paul Bradford, Mark R Stevens, Darrel Clarkson and Michael O’Neill. The Mick McGuigan trophy for the best score went to Grady Clarke and Phil again O’Regan with 48. The best score from Goulburn was Brett Lawson and Adam Zagar with 41cb. Runner up for Goulburn, Noel Ostini and Paul Falk with 41 and Long Reef runner up was Denis Watchorn and Robert Butcher 42 cb. The Dave Cooper trophy for the best individual score for the visiting team on the Saturday went to Ryan Day with square. Thank you to Greg Croker (Captain) and all the Goulburn lads for a great weekend and I look forward to going down to Goulburn on the weekend of the 9th and 10th of November. Any Long Reef member who hasn’t been but fancies a golf weekend away don’t hesitate to get in contact with me and I can discuss what the weekend holds.

Wetlands Project – Summary of Changes

Holes 9, 14, 15 &16

9th – With the demise of the pine tree (which is an integral feature of the hole) a high mound will be

constructed with a bunker and trees

14th, 15th - Mounding will be positioned between each of these fairways to better define the holes,

which will marginally impact the 10th.

16th - The fairway will be moved to the north to further alleviate balls going OOB. Balls landing on

the fairway will either stay on the fairway or run onto the northern mounding (part of which will be

at fairway height). The area from the tee to the fairway will be partially levelled to alleviate short

drives running into the long grass.

Holes 8, 9, 18, Practice Fairway and Chipper

8th – Will have water on the southern side.

18th – No changes apart from Practice fairway.

Practice Fairway – Will be raised to minimise dampness and flooding. It will be 15+ metres longer

and the tee box wider (as the access road is no longer required).

Chipper – Will be re positioned near the current site and rebuilt including a practice bunker. It will

also be used as a ‘spare hole’ (with water on the left!).
