Getting political in nursing practice 1983 Urban Aid Fund 300,000

The Silwood Family Centre (Pennock, Davies) EXPERIENCE OF TEACHING, CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT AND EXTERNAL EXAMINATION/REVIEW Overview of responsibilities at Winona State University During my three years at Winona State I have contributed to a range of programs on the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, as well as more recently, contributing to the Masters in Nursing program. Since I joined the University as the revised undergraduate curriculum was being implemented, I have had the opportunity to influence and shape the direction of these courses. I have acted as course coordinator for both N352 Caring for the Older Adult and N353 Professional Practice II. I have also performed the role of both practicum and clinical instructor – roles that were new to me as there is no equivalent in the UK. Specifically, I have supervised six groups of students in the environment of Eisenberg 6-2 at Rochester Methodist Hospital – an acute colo-rectal floor, and supervised a number of service-learning projects in low-income housing developments for older adults. In 2009, 2010 and 2012 I facilitated groups in the skills lab for N341 Skills and Assessment. I have also contributed sessions to course N354 Leadership in Research. More recently, I have led two theoretical courses with senior year students on the undergraduate program: N426 Clinical Prevention and Population Health, and N444 Leadership in Contemporary Healthcare. I also contributed to N443 Professional Practice III, facilitating a group of students on the Continuing Care in the Community Module. In September 2012 I was invited to co-teach N614M Evidence-Based Practice in hybrid form. I contributed to the RN – BS program in Fall 2012, co-teaching N435 Holistic Assessment in distance learning format. Specific responsibilities in relation to each of these courses is outlined below: N341 Therapeutic Applications of Nursing Skills and Health Assessment Clinical instructor Plan and coordinate simulation N352 Caring for the Older Adult Course coordinator (planning and arranging practicum sites, supporting faculty) Teaching theoretical component Practicum group instructor N353 Professional Practice II

Course coordinator Teaching theoretical component Clinical instructor N354 Leadership in Research Guest contributor N444 Leadership in Contemporary Healthcare Instructor N426 Clinical Prevention and Population Health Course coordinator/instructor N443 Professional Practice III

Group facilitator, Continuing Care in the Community – supervising student at Madonna Towers Skilled Nursing Facility (older adults) and Headstart (pre-school program for children of low income families. Contribution to ‘round-table’ teaching sessions.

Curriculum development Since Fall 2011, I have co-chaired the Undergraduate Curriculum Sub-Committee. Principle activities in this role have included:

• Completing the work of mapping and revising the undergraduate curriculum • Reviewing the contribution of ATI testing to the undergraduate curriculum • Reviewing and revising clinical rubrics • Developing relevant sections of the CCNE study report and preparing for the CCNE

accreditation visit in Fall 2012. Overview of teaching responsibilities at the University of Sheffield (1994 – 2005) I taught across a range of programmes at all levels within the School of Nursing, including undergraduate Level 2 modules, the Advanced Diploma in Nursing Studies (ADNS), B.Med.Sci. and M.Med.Sci. programmes and a professional doctorate programme (D.Med.Sci). During 2001 I was involved in module development and subsequently made a significant contribution to the ARCC module (Ageing, Rehabilitation and Continuing Care) of the ADNS on two sites. This provided me

with an opportunity to ensure that the findings of the national AGEIN Project (see Research Grants and Contracts) informed the development of pre-registration nurse education at the University of Sheffield. Also during 2001 I developed the Advanced Qualitative Methods module for the D.Med.Sci (with Dr. Jane Seymour) and was joint module leader until March 2003. I developed the gerontological pathway for the M.Med.Sci. I contributed regular sessions to the ENB 941 programme (Nursing Older People - Level 2) and to the B.Med.Sci. Research Appreciation and Application module. I also made a significant contribution to the Research Methods module of the M.Med.Sci and supervised numerous dissertations at both Masters and undergraduate level. Research Supervision I have supervised six PhD students, two as first supervisor. A ‘partnership’ approach has allowed me to develop confidence and skills in research supervision alongside experienced co-supervisors. This has enhanced my own professional development to the extent that I now feel well prepared to assume the role of first supervisor. Details of projects are as follows:

Diploma of Higher Education in Nursing Studies (three year programme leading to first registration – Normanby College of Health Care Studies, Kings College Hospital, London) Coordinator for research appreciation module ENB 870 (Research Appreciation and Application in Nursing) – Normanby College of Health Care Studies, and Kings College, University of London Lead role in developing curriculum and steering through internal and external validation processes Teaching innovations I am committed to the use of research to inform the development of creative and innovative modules to ensure that students experience teaching of the highest quality. To this end I have been instrumental in the development and facilitation of new modules on research and on aspects of ageing, rehabilitation and continuing care at undergraduate, post-graduate, and doctoral levels, and have edited books and written book chapters to support these modules. At the University of Sheffield I was involved in the development of an innovative Masters degree pathway in Ageing, Rehabilitation and Continuing Care, which fosters an interdisciplinary approach to enable students to draw on a range of modules offered by relevant departments and faculties within the University. During 2001 I co-developed the Advanced Qualitative Methods module for the professional D.Med.Sci. Nursing and Midwifery. This innovative module was designed to draw upon expertise in qualitative methods within the School of Nursing and Midwifery. Following a small number of introductory sessions, students had the opportunity to ‘interrogate’ leading experts in the field about their research in a series of facilitated seminars. Module evaluations from subsequent cohorts of students were excellent. In 1995, I co-developed a module on Research Appreciation and Application within the B.Med.Sci. (Clinical Nursing Practice and Midwifery). This module adopted a new approach to teaching skills of research appreciation by focusing overtly on the skills necessary to critically appraise research reports and implement findings appropriately within clinical practice. The module proved to be extremely successful and was purchased as a stand-alone module by a number of NHS Trusts within the area. It was also translated into distance learning format. In 1998, a book to support the module was published (Crookes and Davies 1998). A second edition of this text was published in 2004. Following the very positive experience of developing the Group Research Project module within the MA ARQE programme (Department of Sociological Studies), I developed the assessment for the Research Methods module of the B.Med.Sci. in Health Care Research to incorporate a group research project. The first group to undertake this revised module negotiated a small amount of research funding to allow them to undertake a project on skillmix within two nursing homes. This provided an excellent

12

opportunity to apply the theory underpinning research methods in practice, together with experience of undertaking empirical work under the close supervision of the module leader. I developed close links with the University’s Regional Office through the PLUS scheme (Project Link University of Sheffield). This helped to ensure that students undertaking research projects as part of a programme of study were linked with local service providers to ensure that projects were of direct relevance to practice. ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SHEFFIELD My administrative responsibilites prior to moving to the US were created largely by the demands of managing a series of nationally funded research projects (see Research Grants and Contracts). This involved supervising research staff, managing the research budget, planning and co-ordinating the research plan, devising and co-ordinating a dissemination strategy and contributing to data collection and analysis as appropriate. At the University of Sheffield I contributed to research support and co-ordination within the CARER department and more widely within the School of Nursing and Midwifery as outlined below: • At departmental level I held responsibility for co-ordination of the research strategy within the

CARER department. This involved the establishment of regular day-long workshops incorporating a range of activities aimed at supporting research and scholarship, including reports of recently completed research, skills-based sessions and writing workshops. I played an important role in developing research capacity within the department, particularly through supporting individual members of staff to engage in research, seek research funding and publish their work. This support was instrumental in enabling several members of staff to make the transition from a predominantly teaching and practice role to a role incorporating research and scholarship, consistent with Departmental and School strategy.

• I was a member of the Nursing and Midwifery Research Liaison Committee since it’s inception in

1994 until I began my post-doctoral fellowship in 2003. This committee provided an important forum for information sharing and debate between academics and researchers within Local NHS Trusts and other service providers. As a direct consequence of my membership of this committee, I supervised two practice-based research projects within the Trent Focus initiative.

• Between 1997 and 2003 I was a member of the Nursing Research Executive within the School of

Nursing and Midwifery and was also a member of the School of Nursing and Midwifery Research Ethics Group. This group was responsible for reviewing the ethical implications of proposals requiring access to students and/or staff of the School of Nursing and Midwifery. I relinquished these responsibilities with the award of the DoH post-doctoral fellowship.

• I was a founder member of the Placement Working Group with a remit to consider student nurse

placements within the independent sector. This involved identifying problems and solutions in

Page 13: CURRICULUM VITAE Dr. Susan Davies Associate Professor ... davies cv2015.pdfDr. Susan Davies . Associate Professor . Department of Nursing . Winona State University. Dr. Susan Davies:

13

order to ensure high quality placements and avoid shortages within the placement circuit. One outcome was a series of study days for staff employed in local nursing homes aimed at preparing them for their role in student learning. These study days provided an excellent forum for debate and helped to forge links between independent sector providers and the School of Nursing and Midwifery.

• Between 2001 and 2003 I co-ordinated the bi-monthly CARER Departmental Seminar Programme.

This provided valuable opportunities for members of staff to share research findings and experiences with colleagues in a non-threatening environment.

PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES While working in the UK, I received numerous invitations to contribute my expertise to external agencies, both as an external examiner and reviewer for a number of educational programmes, and as an external reviewer of research proposals. I also contributed to the development of a number of government policy initiatives at a national level. Between 1999 and 2001, I was co-opted to the Working Group on the Acute Nursing Care of Older People, a sub-group of the the Standing Nursing and Midwifery Advisory Committee, reporting to the Minister of Health. The report of this working party, which includes a set of practice standards, was published as Caring for Older People: a nursing priority (SNMAC 2001) to coincide with the launch of the National Service Framework for Older People (DoH 2001). Also in 1999 I was invited to join the self-care reference group within the Department of Health benchmarking project as an academic member. This involved working closely with service users, family carers, practitioners and researchers to develop benchmarks for nursing and healthcare practice in relation to the promotion of self-care. I was able to offer a gerontological perspective to this work. Through my research, I established international links with colleagues at the Universities of Linkoping, Jonkoping and Boras in Sweden, at the Universities of Adelaide and Wollongong in Australia, and at Saitama Prefectural University in Japan, predominantly in the field of continuing care research. These links resulted in joint publications and opportunities for collaborative research and scholarship. In 2005 I began a six-month period of study leave as part of my post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. This allowed me to compare continuing care services in Britain and the US, as well as providing an opportunity to work in an internationally renowned department of gerontology under the guidance of Professor Robert Kane. In 2003, I established the National Care Homes Research and Development Forum with Dr Katherine Froggatt (University of Sheffield) and Professor Julienne Meyer (City University). Our main objective was to provide a platform for practitioners and researchers to network, share information and ideas arising from their work. Members believe that the forum has the potential to bring together a wealth of knowledge and talent and could exert a considerable influence on future research agendas for long-term care for older people. Since its inception, the National Care Homes Research and Development Forum has facilitated networking between approximately 100 researchers and practitioners involved in care home work. In 2004 The Forum was awarded Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) funding to run a seminar series (Transitions in Care Homes: meeting the demands of the 21st century) to facilitate the exchange of national and international ideas and experiences in order to inform and plan
