• Read 2 syllable words• Say the word• Clap each syllable• Lunchbox – lunch/box• Sound talk the first syllable and blend • Then do the same with the second syllable.• Adult says both syllables. • Repeat and then ask the child to join in.

Spelling Rules
• If root word ends in an e – drop it!
e.g. hope – hoping• If root word ends in a y preceded by a consonant –
change it to an i!
e.g. baby – babies• If root word ends in a single consonant preceded by a
vowel and the suffix begins with a vowel – double the consonant!
e.g. shop + ing - shopping

• These are great ways to help spellings!
• Could – O U lucky duck
• People – people eat orange peel like elephants
• Because – big elephants can always understand small elephants.

Even though the phonics programme finishes in Year 2, all these strategies are implemented
throughout the school.
