Introduction The word philosophy itself is from Greek words literally means ‘ love for wisdom and has

traditionally implied the pursuit of wisdom .

The study of general and fundamental problems, such as, knowledge, values, reason,

and language.

The birth of Philosophy Philosophy originated in the Greek city states along the coast of Asia Minor around 600 BC◦ Because they were not as bound by

tradition as city-states on mainland Greece◦ Because they were also constantly in

touch with the ancient science and speculation of the Middle East

◦ They were, in short, more open to intellectual innovation and speculation than counterparts on the mainland

Traditional Subfields of Philosophy

Logic - concerned to provide sound methods for distinguishing good from bad reasoning

•Ethics - Takes up the meanings of our moral concepts—such as right action, obligation and justice—and formulates principles to guide moral decisions, whether in private or public life.

•Metaphysics - Seeks basic criteria for determining what sorts of things are real.

•Epistemology - concerns the nature and scope of knowledge.

The Uses of Philosophy

General Problem Solving - The study of philosophy enhances, in a way no other activity does,

one's problem-solving capacities.

•Persuasive Powers - Philosophy provides training in the construction of clear formulations, good

arguments.

•Writing Skills. Writing is taught intensively in many philosophy courses, and many regularly

assigned philosophical texts are unexcelled as literary essays

Conclusion

Philosophy is an activity of thought, which may become a way of life. It is primarily a pursuit

after wisdom. It can be describe in many ways. Philosophy has been and may continue to be

importance in the live of humans, around the world.
