GeneralThe PhiCap series, is a wellapproved and reliable EPCOS MKP(Metalized Polypropylene) capaci-tor series for AC current applica-tions with long time of field expe-riences, more than 25 years. The power range varies from0.5…25 kvar and 0.7...5.0 kvarper single capacitor can, depend-ing on a three-phase or single-phase capacitor design. The PhiCapcapacitor is especially intended forpower factor correction in industrialand semi-industrial applications.The capacitors are manufacturedusing metalized polypropylene film as dielectric and housed in acylindrical aluminum case.

The PhiCap is a self-healing (SH),metalized polypropylene film capac-itor. The current-carrying AlZn metallayer (the best alloy for an electrode)is vapor-deposited onto one side of the film, the surface of dielectric.

Compact design – low weightand small volumeThe entire three-phase capacitor iscomposed of three single-phaseelement stacks. The electrodes areconnected by metal spraying layer(shooping process) on the face ends of the winding elements.The winding elements are encap-sulated in a cylindrical aluminumcase and hermetically sealed eitherby a press-rolled metal lid or plasticdisc with fast-on terminals.

Dual safety systemsa Self healing: the capacitor repairs

itself, in case of overload. SHcapability prevents permanentdielectric breakdown in case ofsporadic voltage surges, overcur-rent or overtemperature.

a Overpressure disconnector: thisprevents the capacitor frombursting at the end of its servicelife, or caused through electricalor thermal overload. In case ofpermanent self-healing attemptscaused by repetitive very highpeak voltages or other overloadswill result in permanent break-down. In such a case the safetyswitching device will be activat-ed and disconnect (cut off) thecapacitor winding elements fromthe power source by means ofinternal pressure raising (expan-sion of the capacitor Al-case).

Design hint:Due to the increase of the capac-itor’s height, in a breakdowncase, it is necessary to provideenough clearance obove thecapacitor‘s terminals.

PhiCap Capacitor SelectionTo specify and select the capacitorsfor PFC several factors affect theperformance and the expected lifetime of the capacitors:a Voltagea Harmonicsa Temperature (UCT)a Load (overcurrent)a Inrush currentPermanent overvoltage shortens thecapacitor’s life cycle. The capacitor’srated voltage must be equal orhigher than the operating voltageof the circuit, the capacitor will beconnected too.

Harmonics produce overvoltageand overcurrent on capacitorsthemselves. If the total harmonicsdistortion level for voltage e.g.exceeds 5%, serious damages to

installation may occur by theresonance of the circuit. In suchcases an implementation of seriesreactors (de-tuning) is recommended.

Operation of the capacitors abovethe upper category temperature(UCT) level will accelerate the degra-dation of dielectric and shortenthe capacitor’s life cycle.

Residual voltage should not exceed10% of rated voltage while re-switching of capacitors. Duringcharging period of the capacitorsthe current is very high – if switchedin automatic capacitor banks, it isvery likely that discharged capaci-tors are connected to chargedones already connected to thegrid. In such cases the maximumpermissible transient peak current is 100*IN.

During the switching process ther-mal- and electrodynamic- stressesare developed caused by transientover-currents of high amplitudeand frequency and may damagethe system. Capacitor contactorswith preloading resistors or series-inductance (cable twins betweencontactor and capacitor) will avoidexcessive transient currents.

Technical Data

High inrush current withstandcapability, a big benefitCapacitors for power factor correc-tion applications undergo a lot of switching. Switched capacitorshave to cover high inrush currentswithout reducing their ownservice life. The pulse strength ofthis technology comes from theenlarged contact area (heavy edgemetalization) and spray-metal con-tact (winding element face side).

This is most important in case of:a Parallel switching of capacitors a Non-detuned capacitorsa Capacitor banks using “standard

contactors”

Service life up to ≥ 100,000 operating hoursAfter an appropriate drying periodin a high vacuum chamber duringthe production process, to elimi-nate the moisture on the active ele-ment, the capacitor is filled withbiodegradable soft resin.

This production process helps toavoid oxidation and partial dis-charges and results in capacitancestability over a long life time.
