No. 12, 2nd May, 2016
Dear Parents
Our Year 3/4 students have continued to be intrigued and delighted by their Science topic, so I have included some more pictures from their incursion. Last week I had a number of visits from excited children to show me the results of their experiments. The one that made the most impact on me personally was the dissolving egg – it felt really strange in my hand….ugh! As 3/4R reported,
The grade 3 / 4R children had great fun making 'Rubber Eggs". We placed an egg into vinegar for 24
hours and hypothesised what might happen. The results were amazing! The egg lost its shell and became very dense and rubbery. The vinegar ate the shell and hardened the membrane of the egg. The egg shell and the vinegar had a 'Chemical Reaction ' !
A very big thank you to the families who attended the Working Bee on Saturday, and also to those who came along for the Gardening Club Planning Meeting: the Griffiths, McConville, Beechaz, Festini, Dorian, Barnett, Parker, Lyng, Gibson, Steels, Pritchard, Quinlan, Knight and Clark families. A great turn up to do a great job!
Just a reminder of our two school closure days this week on Thursday and Friday. Our staff will be attending two days of professional development at the Holy Cross Centre in Templestowe. It is a live in for the staff, with
visiting speakers, Michael Yore on Thursday and Wilson McCaskill on Friday. Father Paul will also be visiting us on Thursday to speak and to celebrate Mass. These days are usually quite intense days of concentration, but we have always also found them to be very rewarding and a great contributor to better outcomes for our students.
We wish all our mums a very happy Mother’s Day this week, and hope that your children spoil you beautifully on Sunday. Thank you to each of you for all that you do for us here in
the St Mary’s Community too!
Congratulations to our Students of the Week:

With my prayers and best wishes for the coming week, Mrs Lynne O’Meara Principal
It’s all adding
up to you
being a great
person!
Well done!
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
when there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; and where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master, Grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console; to be understood, as to understand,
to be loved as to love; for it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Visual Arts Has anyone wondered where the tiles on the wall in
the hall are from? They represent the families who were at St Mary’s
School in Mt Evelyn before 2000. Each family got to take one tile home which was decorated with an illustration representing their
family. Teachers who were there at the time were Mrs
Glennie, Mrs Blencowe and Mrs Passingham If you have any further questions ask to speak to
one of the teachers listed on this document. By Matisse Fanfulla and Dustee Walsh 5/6 B

A reading from the holy Gospel according to John
The Holy Spirit will teach you everything and remind you of all I have said to you. Jesus said to his disciples: ‘If anyone loves me he will keep my word, and my Father will love
him, and we shall come to him and make our home with him. Those who do not love me do
not keep my words. And my word is not my own: it is the word of the one who sent me. I
have said these things to you while still with you; but the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my
name, will teach you everything and remind you of all I have said to you. Peace I bequeath to you, my own peace I
give you, a peace the world cannot give, this is my gift to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid. You heard
me say: I am going away, and shall return. If you loved me you would have been glad to know that I am going to the
Father, for the Father is greater than I. I have told you this now before it happens, so that when it does happen you may
believe.’ The Gospel of the Lord
In today's gospel Jesus is reminding his disciples of the essence of everything he has tried to teach them. Even though he is leaving them he reassures them that they won't be left alone. The Holy Spirit will help them and guide them in their mission. Try to be aware of the Holy Spirit's guidance in your own life. In our busy lives we sometimes ‘tune out’ to God, but the Holy Spirit is always there, if only we pause to listen.
There are no class masses this week due to the school closure days on Thursday and
Friday.
Mini Vinnies
The Mini Vinnie’s Group are promoting the long life milk and long life food collection. Please bring items to
your classroom.
We will be donating these to the Mt. Evelyn St. Vincent de Paul group in June. They will then be distributed to local people in need.
Thank you for your support!
WORKING BEES 2016
We believe that having a safe and pleasant school environment is important. Thank you to all families
who have helped with school maintenance during last year.
To assist planning for this year we are asking each family to attend ONE Working Bee and to indicate which
session,(listed below) suits best. In an effort to cater for everyone, we will hold Working Bees across a range of days
and times.
The alternative to attending a Working Bee is to complete the payment details below which are for a $60.00
contribution toward hiring maintenance help as required. Please complete and return the form below as soon as
possible (families who have not replied by Feb 26th will be contacted).
Yours faithfully,
THE MAINTENANCE COMMITTEE. ____________________________________________________________________________________________

IMPORTANT INFO FOR PARENTS
In addition to our existing forms of communication, which include blanket text messaging, we are also in the process of including ‘Skoolbag’ to our communication options. This is an app for iPhone and Android that will enhance communications with the
Parent/Student community. Parents wishing to access this service will need to install the St Mary’s School ‘Skoolbag’ App. To install the app, search for our school name (St Marys Catholic Primary School Mount Evelyn) in either the Apple App Store, or Google Play
Store. We are still waiting for the Apple iPhone App to become available. We will advise once confirmation of availability occurs. For Windows Phone, and Windows 8.1 or 10 users, search for ‘Skoolbag’ in the Windows store, install the app and find your school.

FOOD BANK Once again we are collecting donations for our Food Bank. Every
year a team of ladies set aside a couple of days from their own
busy lives, to cook and prepare meals to freeze for families that
may be going through a difficult time. This has helped many
members of our St Marys Primary School Community last year.
We are asking for donations of, lasagne sheets, pasta sauce,
tomato paste, cheese, stock and anything else we can use to make
up trays of yummy lasagne and Bolognese sauce. We would also
appreciate monetary donations so we can purchase food stuffs to
try some new recipes.
If you know of anyone from St Mary’s Primary school that may
need some help with a meal for their family, please contact the
office.
