Pete Brown 5x5 proposal

PETE BROWN – 5X5 Proposal Recap My proposal at the first 5X5 event revolved around the idea of making visual art environments more engaging and interactive places by creating a truly accessible web based CMS and mobile app platform. The days of mobile experiences only being for the financially and technologically elite will be over. I want to create a CMS that individual ‘starving’ artists, as well as museums and anything in-between can access and use. Using their smart device, they can generate all the content they’d need, yet if they have more sophisticated equipment, that’d also be compatible. Use the camera to take photos, shoot video, the microphone to record audio and so forth. From there the media pieces will be uploaded and assigned to one of up to four possible buttons for each ‘stop’. That might be a video with the artist demonstrating a technique, an audio spot with a curator speaking to the historical accuracy of a sculpture or perhaps a string of images looking at an artist’s studio, hometown, etc. This content will be stored on a server and once all of the ‘stops’ have been generated the CMS will export either an app to be loaded onto devices, should an organization have a fleet, or a URL that leads to the same content, just streaming rather than downloadable, for venues that count of patrons to bring their own. Development will be closely modeled from the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) best practices strategies for mobile applications. This means that people who have a wide range of abilities will be able to use the finished experiences. Utilizing voice recognition, large simple buttons and a variety of ‘trigger’ methods, make this an option for traditional and non-traditional arts patrons alike. This project ties in tightly with the mission of an art experience that I created with the support of Bosma Enterprises, in October of 2012, called BLIND: VisualEyes Without Your Eyes. This visual art exhibition was hosted at Gallery 924 and allowed visually impaired guests to experience my visual artwork alongside their sighted counterparts through streaming multimedia content associated with each of the three dozen works, and through allowing visitors to touch the work. People of all abilities, of all ages and demographics came out and fully immersed themselves in this offering. This project takes my concept to the next NEEDED level. Long overdue access for artists/organizations to share more content. Access for people of diverse abilities to experience artwork. Access delivered to core visitors and an open invitation to new ones. I’m currently seeking a partnership to help bring this concept to life and am anxious to meet with anyone interested, though a funding donor or ‘concept to final product’ sort of organization would be preferred. I have individuals and organizations standing by to test the concept, a lengthy list of media coverage from the experience that highlight community support and my years of multimedia production, education and museum experience fuel my initiative to get things moving as soon as realistically possible.
