COVER

Hello PRM fans! I am a 4yr old spayed Mala-

mute named Kona. I love people but I am not

good with cats and maybe some dogs. I can

be directed away from dogs when I meet them

though. I am looking for a home with older

kids and wouldn’t mind it at all if I could be the

only four-legger in your life. I love to jog and I

already know how to fetch, sit & shake a paw. For

more information on me please contact Hinton &

District SPCA, our contact info is on page 7. I sure

hope I can be home for Christmas!

I am so beauti-ful that they had to call me Amarillo (Amy). I was very shy but I’m really starting to real-ize how nice everyone is. They think I am a 1yr old Shepherd/Kelti X. What they know for sure is that I’m beautiful, sweet and a very good girl.

My name is Sampson and I am a gor-geous St. Ber-nard. I’m not quite 3yrs old yet but I weigh in at 135lbs. Everyone calls me a sweet & gentle giant. I have epilepsy,

so I’ll require some med’s but it’s a small price to pay for all this handsomeness.

Toby the Pet Therapy Dog, says Be a Buddy, Not a Bully

So, on occasion I will write book reviews. Usually they are from people that I know personally or in a genre that I really like ( horror ones are on a diff erent site- more on that later!) So I was happy to receive a review request from Charmaine Hammond htt p://www.hammond-group.biz/ - someone I’ve booked my clients with and who not only has a great business, but a great legacy that she carries on in the name of her dog Toby- who passed away a litt le while ago. Toby was an amazing Pet Therapy Dog and her book Toby’s Tales is a wonderful book about his work. She established the Toby Team, with her newest pup Camo, and I see nothing but great things coming out of this group htt p://www.theoriginal-teamtoby.com/ So below is my Amazon.com review for you with the link. As I mention, not only am I publicist, but I also worked in child care and as a preschool teacher

If you are looking for a handsome boy then look no further! My name is Liam and I love go-ing for walks. I’m okay with cats & other dogs but I pre-fer the calmer

ones. With my large size I would be better suited to a home with older children.

Hello, I’m a 2yr old boy named Onyx. My foster mom says I am the sweetest boy ever; quiet, friendly, loving and calm. I like other respectful dogs, and I’m even good with puppies. I would be an easy addition to any family. Please consider me if you are looking for your new companion pet.

Hi I’m Sheena and I’m a 4-5yr old Ger-man Shepherd X. Although my vision is impaired I don’t let it stop me. I love playing ball and I’m friendly with all

people & most dogs. I would love a patient owner willing to take doggie classes.

Hello PRM Fans! Bo here. I am a 2yr old, 50lb, Collie X that can hardly wait for the New Year. Do you think we might celebrate together? I am very friendly, great with other dogs, intelligent, clean & quiet... seriously folks, what else do you need?

I am a wonderful, 65lb, Lab X named Awren Ohana. I’m rather short & stocky but still very beautiful & such a GOOD girl. I love to snuggle, play with toys, sleep in my kennel & go for walks. I’m not high energy, but I do enjoy exercise.

I’m a 10mth old sweetheart named Book. I’ve learned so much from the resident dog; I now sit, stay, wait for my food, come when called and even PLAY! I love other dogs and I will make a great companion for other dogs & people alike.

My name is Camaro and I am a Shepherd X with the best smile ever! I have been quite good inside the house and I am great off leash. I am working on my leash training. I can’t wait to meet you... Maybe we could wait up for Santa together?

Hello, I’m a handsome, 1yr old, boy named DC. I’m always happy to see you, and will dance around, but I’m still a bit scared to let strangers pet me. Although I can be shy, I’m doing very well & have been learning very quickly.

Supporters of Alberta Animal Rescues (SOAAR) is a non-profi t organization that is made up of

a small group of volunteers who are committ ed to helping Alberta rescue organizations with funding, material and volunteer aid. We understand the challenges that rescues face daily with mounting vet bills and the need for con-stant fundraising and it is our hope to help alleviate some of this stress while off ering as much support as we can to all Alberta animal rescues.

SOAAR was started in August 2013 by a small group of friends who wanted to make a diff erence in the lives of ani-mals within Alberta. With so many res-cues already in Alberta, we decided to not start our own rescue, but to create SOAAR to support rescues that already exist. We understand the needs of res-cues, how hard it can be to fi nd volun-teers, do fundraising and pay vet bills all the while trying to rescue animals. The goal of SOAAR is to take some of the stress out of rescue logistics so that rescues can focus on rescuing instead of worrying about how to pay their next vet bill.

Animal rescues can apply for aid from SOAAR by asking for an application from us ([email protected]). In order to qualify for aid from SOAAR rescues

S O A A Rmust operate within Alberta and con-duct their organization according to several of our beliefs including but not limited to a) provide necessary veteri-nary care including inoculations, para-site control and spay/neuter, b) animals must be placed in a caring environ-ment where they are rehabilitated with the goal of fi nding an equally caring and responsible adopted and c) does not extend an animal’s life if they are destined to have a poor quality of life in order to gain sympathy and subse-quently donations.

SOAAR is also looking to grow our volunteer base and would love to re-cruit volunteers throughout Alberta to help us spread our name and more easily work with wide spread rescues. If you are interested in learning more about volunteering please contact us at [email protected].

Hey, how you doing? Purrs and all that for stopping by! I’m a newbie, dunno why really cause I’ve been a kitten for as long as I can remember and I’m pretty good at it too! I’m always on the go as a kitten should be and I love to play lots. I’m about 4mths now so hurry and adopt me, my name is Harley.

I came into care with my sister Zsa Zsa, my name is Ziggy. We were classed as little rebels and that’s not good when you’re sit-ting in the pound! I used to hiss like a snake but now I can’t get enough of being around people, how things change. We are about 14wks now and are ready to go home!

Put that mouse down... please! Stay awhile and I’ll tell you my tale. My name is Evan. I was born on the street and two nice ladies helped to catch me when I was 12wks old. Now you might think that is young, but for street kitties that gives us all the time in the world to learn how to be afraid of you humans. It’s taken me some time to forgive and learn that life will be much better for me. I’m a good boy now!

I’m a little girl that’s full o’beanz! Hi, I am Zsa Zsa. I came from our Animal Care & Control Cen-tre as a hissy kitten...me hissy...naw...not no more. I’m a great little monkey that will climb all over you for hugs and kisses. My brother Ziggy and I are a com-edy team... going home together would be purrfect!

Hello, my name is Flip. I’m a handsome and friendly boy of around 5mths. I arrived in res-cue because I was born on the street with my brother Sylvester. I will make a fabulous, lovable and relaxed companion, and I am okay with older, sensible children. I’m ok with dogs too but they have to be nice.

Sylvester here! I have to tell you many black and white cats have a fabulous temperament and I’m living proof. I can be a little shy but don’t let that fool you I can also be the biggest goof! I’m looking for a loving home where I can burn off all my kittenish energy and receive affection - and lots of it, please!

My name is Summer and yes, I’m a girl and yes I have a moustache! I was born in an alley and was lucky to have been rescued as there are so many of us out on the streets. I am as cute as a button. I am about 14wks now and ready to start my life with my new parents.

Kiwi here, I’m a tall girl with a cheeta body type. I was quite thin when I came into care but now I’m looking sleek and stun-ning. I like to keep busy, but when I’m ready to curl up I’ll find your lap. I know my name and I love to be around people. I’m curious about dogs, funny things, and still checking them out.

I’m Rowan. Well I’ve certainly come around after my time on the streets. Until rescue I’d never had a home unless you count the garage I used to hide under. I’m now looking for a patient home. I don’t mind cats but I’ve not been around dogs or small children and I think they would be a tad over stimulating for me.

Thank you to Karen Hunter forsposoring me and helping me

fi nd a home.

Saving Animals From Euthanasia Team (SAFE)

My name is Bentley and I am a very playful, outgo-ing, and loving boy. I hope to be “home” for the holidays with a brand new fam-ily. Fun Fact: Bentley has an

identical twin brother named Jake who is also available for adoption.

Hi there! Everyone calls me Jasper and say I am the sweet-est and most beautiful chap around. I am gentle, and I love to play & be around people, but I

would really prefer a calm home with older children and no other pets.

Happy Holi-days everyone! I am a very gentle,affectionate,

& sweet girl named Rhianna who can’t wait to find a home. I love playing with other cats

but I would prefer a home with older children & other submissive pets.

My name is Eclypse and I am very outgoing & playful. I am a pretty girl who loves to snuggle and play with other cats, but I also do well with dogs and chil-

dren. Fun Fact: Eclypse is one of many kitties at SAFE with a moustache!

Hello, I am a super friendly girl named Kitty Mon. I love people of all ages, other pets & explor-ing. I used to be a stray with my sister Wyken (who also needs

a home) but SAFE has promised to find us homes of our very own.

I’m known as the sweet, snuggly & gentle guy named Tito. I love other cats & people but would prefer a home with older children. My brother Bailey & I used

to live as strays but we’ve adjusted quickly to regular meals & warm beds.

I’m Soda, and I’ve been waiting for someone to adopt me. I’m a very friendly kitty who loves to snuggle and get attention but I would prefer to be the only cat around. I lost my ear tips to frostbite but don’t worry, I didn’t lose any personality!

I’m a 6mth old, playful, Lab X named Abigail. l was quite shy and can still take a while to warm up to men, but with time & patience l come around. l’m great on/off leash and I am learning my basic commands. When l get excited, my whole body wiggles!

l was having a hard time in a shelter so I came into harts care. My name is Bo and I love to run & play. I walk well on leash, know my basic commands and l’m working on reducing my reactivity to new people. I would do best in a quiet home without children.

Well hello there! My name is Zaya and l’m a 1yr old Shep-herd/Collie X. l am a very sweet girl and although I am still a bit timid l’m coming out of my shell more each day. l have a lot of energy and l love to run around the yard, play fetch & chew on toys and I’m an overall great girl.

Ho! Ho! Ho! My name is Con-nor and I am a large, 2yr old, Husky X who loves to cuddle. I really like kids, but I will need an experienced owner who is ready to be a strong leader. l would do best in an active home where l am the only animal in the house.

There are many jobs that we entrust to our canine friends; watching over our property, helping the disabled, herd-ing our domestic animals, catching criminals and visiting with the sick in hospitals. We honour them for the roles they play in our lives and take care of them in return.

And then there is the story of Kai. He too was given a job in life but it did not come with any gratitude or reward. Kai was simply an anchor that kept the two hounds that were tethered to him from running off when outside. He did not have value for who he was and did his job until the day he was seized from his owner and found himself at a shelter.

Animal Rescue Transfer System (ARTS) was contacted to see if we could fi nd a place for this sweet eight year old Shepherd X. How could we say no!? ARTS Air Angel Russ Anderson fl ew down to southern Alberta to pick him up and bring him back to Edmonton. As it would turn out, Russ and his wife Karen decided they would adopt Kai.

Kai went from enduring life as a living tether to being loved and cherished in a family. The joy he felt at his new found freedom was clear from the excitement on his whitened face. Rescue may have come late in his life but it didn’t matt er to ARTS or to the Andersons. Kai was a gentle soul giving so much love back.

The world came crashing down when Kai was diagnosed with cancer not even a month aft er he came to ARTS. How could this be fair?! Kai fi nally had his very own family

By: Inge Nielsen

From Anchor to Cancer to HopeKai’s Courage

who loved him and had everything to look forward to. The reality of cancer was devastating and terrifying.

Russ and Karen were determined that cancer would not defi ne who Kai is nor would cancer be allowed to claim his life without a fi ght. ARTS agreed completely. Dr. Eva Braze at Sift on Park Vet Clinic undertook Kai’s medical care. It was decided that a series of test including ultra-sound would be done to determine how far the cancer had spread.

That would allow an informed decision to be made about what would be in the best interest of Kai.

The tests came back and hope has been restored! The can-cer was confi ned to only his anal glands. It had not spread and surgery was now a viable option. There was much joy in Mudville with the news and fundraising began in ear-nest to pay for the diagnostics and surgery. Kai will have his chance at a good life.

There are times when our canine friends teach us humility by the courage and strength theyshow. Kai did his thank-less job of anchor without losing his spirit. He remained a loving dog through it all. He taught all of us at ARTS just how resilient our animal companions are and there is always a reason to cherish hope.

I am a 1-2yr old Pit Bull X named Blaze who came in with a face full of quills and old scars all over my body. Nobody can believe how sweet, happy, & loving, I am

after everything I have been through. I am ready to forget my past and find a loving new family. Happy Holidays!

Hello, my name is Jedi. My brother Hunter and I were saved in the B.A.R.K.S. seizure. Thankfully In-finite WOOFS did everything they could to find us foster

homes. I am a handsome, 1-2yr old, Border Collie X. I am a very active pup and I just need a new family to love.

I’m Turki! I was surren-dered with my Mom and Dad, Charlie & Little Blue. My parents are a bonded pair but I wouldn’t mind ”flying the coop”. Of course I would

I’m a beauty with personality to spare, and before you know it you’ll be in love because I’m just too cute to resist!

Why am I still here? Maybe it’s because I’m a bit shy? I’m learning to trust, and before you know it I’m going to be a real pocket-pal! A Lost Dog and

Lessons Learned

By Travis Grant

So you’ve just lost your pet. You were stunned at fi rst, but now you’re acutely aware of what has happened and you accept that the situation is real. Panic swells

in your gut then recedes with all of its force into a knot of acute anxi-ety. You begin to analyze the math. There are all the places your pet could be, divided by your limitations as one per-son, which equals a depressingly overwhelming sum. A feeling of hopelessness takes hold. As days pass, you’re hindered by an emotional malaise that will persist until you have some kind of resolution. This is the gist of what a person feels when he or she loses a pet. It happened to me, two months ago, on an unexceptional Thursday evening at home.

“Can you let the dogs out, Honey? They’re crying at the door.” My wife Jesica was curled up on the couch, half watching TV, half playing on her iPad. “Sure, no trouble.” I had already heard their nails clicking at the glass and their impatient, throaty litt le cries. It was an early Thurs-day evening in late September. The sky was already gett ing dark and fading to black the further upward you looked. It was cold, too – a chilly -1 °C. I turned on the porch light and sat down beside Jesica, listening for the dogs once they fi nished. When I opened the door for the three of them, only two came in the house. I put on my shoes and a heavy sweater, grabbed a fl ashlight, and stepped outside to search the back yard for the missing dog – a small black Chihuahua we were fostering from the Edmonton Hu-mane Society. My children had aff ectionately named her Chainsaw.

Now you’ve got to understand, Chainsaw is not the sort of dog to run away from home. When she was brought to the EHS, she was nervous and defensive, and she would bite

any hand that drew too near her fearful litt le mouth. Aft er being plied with hot dogs and gentle words, Chainsaw was calm enough to be handled, and the fi rst order of business was to place her in an offi ce with an EHS staff member, so that she could be socialized and gain some confi dence.

By a stroke of fortune, my offi ce was chosen. Chainsaw was still frightened, but I keptcomforting and reassuring her, giving her treats to win her over and gain her trust. Within the hour, I was Chainsaw’s best friend in the world, and she hasn’t left my side since. Wherever I walk, she walks too; and when I stop, she rests on her haunches and looks up at me, waiting for the next cue. At night time, she stretches out on my chest, her head resting to one side, her paws folded over one another. So when she failed to return aft er being let out on a cold fall evening, I assumed the worst.

I live close to Lois Hole Provincial Park, which is fi lled with wildlife. Did a patrolling owl swoop down silently out of the darkness and carry her away in its talons? Was the gate left open for an errant coyote to wander into the yard and clutch Chainsaw in its jaws, before she even had a chance to cry out? These were the sorts of dark thoughts running through my mind. When I fl ashed my light on the gate, I realised what must’ve happened.

The board that normally stands securely against the metal bars of the gate, through which I could now see, had been moved. There across the road, under a luminous cone of orange street light, sat two jack rabbits – the perfect crit-ters for an excitable litt le dog to chase about the neigh-bourhood. Sometimes when I’m driving home at night, I see groups of ten rabbits bounding from lawn to lawn. But I had never taken Chainsaw out at night, so she had

Page 21: Pet Rescue Magazine Dec/Jan 14

21pet rescue magazine December/January 2014local stories...local people...local pets

never laid eyes on one…until now, it seemed. This would explain why the litt le dog who never left my side was sud-denly gone. And then things got worse. When I went inside to tell my wife, I noticed Chainsaw’s collar on the kitchen counter, next to the sink where Jesica had bathed her that aft ernoon. Not only was our small black foster dog missing on a chilly fall night, she didn’t have any identifi cation on her. This was serious. Jesica went straight to the internet, to post about our lost dog on social media, while I headed back outside, to walk the streets and call for Chainsaw. At 1:00 am, she was still nowhere to be seen. A twisting sense of hopelessness took hold. At a loss, I turned for home.

The next morning, I went to the sliding glass door, to see if Chainsaw was waiting to be let in aft er a cold night alone. She wasn’t there. I walked out into the back yard, to see if she was hiding under the deck. The yard was deserted. It was real. Chainsaw was gone. How could this have hap-pened? Wasn’t I a responsible pet owner? My dogs are in good health and up to date on their vaccinations. They’re all microchipped and have collars with identifi cation. My wife and I are usually careful to check the gate, making sure the dogs can’t slip past. Yet there we were, feeling ter-rible for having taken off Chainsaw’s collar and forgett ing, just once, to make sure she couldn’t get out of the yard.

Accepting that she had run away, we took the usual steps for fi nding a lost dog. We made fl yers to post around town; we networked with friends and community groups online; we contacted the RCMP and the Morinville Veteri-nary Clinic, which is standard procedure for St. Albert res-idents who’ve lost pets; and I notifi ed my colleagues in the EHS’ admitt ing department, in the event that Chain-saw was brought in as a stray. We felt confi dent that the net had been widely cast. But it didn’t make the waiting or the separation any easier. Even though we had taken the appropriate steps, we were impatient for Chainsaw’s safe return.

On Saturday morning, the Edmonton Humane Society’s CEO, Stephanie McDonald, called to let me know that Chainsaw had been found on a walking trail at 5:00 AM and was now being held in Morinville. Chainsaw had no discernible identifi cation on her, but she had been micro-chipped when she was in the EHS’ care. And since Chain-saw was still a foster dog, the EHS was still listed as her owner, meaning she wouldn’t be released into my care if I tried to go get her. Stephanie generously off ered to drive to Morinville, on her day off , to get Chainsaw and bring her back to my family. I believe I still owe her for that one.

So what have I learned from this harrowing experience? I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately. My fi rst thought was that I should have known bett er. As a communications

professional who works in the world of animal shelter-ing, I’m constantly writing about and answering people’s questions regarding responsible pet ownership. And I’m always fi nding news stories from around North America and beyond about irresponsible pet ownership. A signifi -cant part of my professional life involves understanding the diff erences between the two and advising accordingly. If anyone should know bett er, it’s me. But if that’s true, then how did it come to pass that I lost my dog?

I think the answer is nuance. We can do all the right things, take all the right precautions, and feel satisfi ed and responsible knowing that we’ve done so. But all it takes is one instance where you forget to check the gate or put your dog’s collar back on aft er a bath, and you wind up in a predicament you knew perfectly well how to avoid. These are the litt le things that oft en lead to big lessons. And they remind us that being a good pet owner relies not only on the practical knowledge we’ve acquired from other sources, but also on our own personal experiences, from which we hopefully learn a great deal.

I’ve witnessed the opposing side of the coin and so the mantra of responsible pet ownership is far more than words to me now – it’s a lived experience with a hard les-son learned. Having your pets tatt ooed and microchipped; ensuring they’re wearing ID collars with contact info; and making sure the information associated with each is cur-rent and up to date: these are details we must vigilantly have in order while our pets are safe and sound in our care. Because it’s that one time, that one instant where a door is left open, a fence board is knocked loose, or some other unpredicted variable presents itself and our beloved pets are gone to who knows where for who knows how long.

I, for one, am defi nitely more vigilant in the wake of Chain-saw’s disappearance and fortunate return. Does what hap-pened make me a bad pet owner? No. It simply illustrates that responsible pet ownership is a continuing education, by which we learn from our mistakes (we all make them, by the way) and strive constantly to do a litt le bett er. For me, that meant going to Home Depot, buying wood, hing-es, and a latch, to make a permanent and impenetrable second gate. I sincerely hope that Chainsaw doesn’t have any other lessons to teach me about keeping her safe in the yard. But if she does, I’ll take them to heart and strive a litt le harder to be the best darn pet owner I can be.

This story has a happy ending. But it has an even bett er epilogue. Two days aft er Chainsaw came home, Jesica and I adopted her. Aft er all she had gone through, committ ing to her for the rest of her life was the least that we could do. We sure do love our litt le Chainsaw. prm

I’m a handsome, 74lb, 1-2yr old, Akita/Shepherd/Husky X named Sully. I love belly rubs and I’m very affectionate. I’m smart, house trained, good on leash, and well behaved with other dogs - unless they are an intact male. I’m working on that. I LOVE car rides.

I am a handsome 1yr old Shepherd X named Mickey. They believe I was born with some neurological issues, but I am not in any pain and it doesn’t depress or slow me down. I am great with kids & other dogs. Don’t feel sorry for my disability, be inspired by my perseverance!

My name is Avery, and I may be tiny but I have a BIG personal-ity! I like to whip around my pen and up my cat pole, play with my mouse, and bat at the dogs as they come by. I’m not afraid of the dogs but will go hide if they are playing rough.

I am an 8mth old Pitti/Lab/Ter-rier X that was hit by a car. My name is Boss. I am recovering from my injuries, which include two broken legs, and it does not dampen my spirit. I am sweet and loving and all I really want is to cuddle and play.

Ebony here. With my kittens weaned, I am looking for a home. I love being scratched under the chin, but I am more of a love-from-afar cat although that may change once I get more comfortable! A home without other pets or children is best.

I am a very beautiful 1yr old Tabby named Emma. I just love getting scratches; you can hear me purr a mile away. I am still unsure about other animals but, in time, I may come around. If you are looking for a beautiful cat who will stay by your side then stop the search!

I am a very sweet girl named Rusty. Chin scratches are great, but I don’t need a lot of atten-tion. I know the perfect home exists for a special cat like me. If you noticed my haircut, it isn’t re-ally a fashion trend, I had some (non-cancerous) tumors removed but I am just fine. I’m a 2-3yr old, Shepherd X,

named Wolfey. I haven’t had that much contact with people so I will require a very patient & understanding home to help me continue my training and over-come my fears. A home with no children or cats would be ideal.

I’m a 2yr old boy named Al E Cat. I am such a darling boy and I just adore getting brushed and cheek rubs. I also really like frolicking with catnip toys so if you adopt me, please make sure that you have a lot of them! I dream of a mature & loving home where I can relax and be loved for being the spunky guy I am.

Hello everyone! I am a hand-some, 3yr old, Peruvian Guinea Pig named Barbosa. I love the good care I’m

getting but would really like to be in my own home where I can get individualized atten-tion. I’m a sweet but timid boy so I would love to go to a quiet home. If you love Guinea Pigs, then please consider adopting me, I’m waiting?

Missy is my name! I am a beautiful & very special 3yr old girl. I really enjoy ear & back scratches and I like to stick

close by. I’m wearing Pink & Silver Glitter soft claws over my nails to keep me in style and prevent scratching rugs & furniture. I was a little nervous having my nails clipped, but it did not take me long to relax. If you would like to give me a home I’m ready to go!

Tails From Home

Hi there! My name is Friday and I am an alumni of a SCARS foster home. In December of 2011 I was adopted by my dad, my mom, and my three broth-

ers. Aft er almost two years with my new family I fi nally have them trained. I am an extremely active dog and when I fi rst came to my new home my parents and I didn’t exactly see eye to eye...

For starters I also had three sisters, all of which were of the feline species, and I couldn’t understand why my dad slept with my leash att ached to his ankle. All I wanted to do was play tag with my sisters?

Then, as grateful as I was for having a HUGE back yard, when other dogs and kids played in the park behind my house I just wanted to go play with them. What’s the big deal if I jump a 5 foot fence? In retrospect I am sorry for all the times my parents were late for work because I wouldn’t come back to my name. But I was young and just wanted to play dodgeball with their att empts to catch me.

But one day my dad brought home a hunting collar. Man this was the best invention ever! He trained me to come home just by making my collar beep! From there I learned to come to my name too. Now I get sooo hyper as soon as I see someone pull out my collar. Since this collar I have never even had to be on a leash to go for a walk. If I get too far from my parents’ side they just call my name. If I don’t listen they just beep me back. We’ve even got our town to allow my collar as a permitt ed leash.

The park behind my house has also been a great play-ground for me. I am so fast that when playing fetch with other dogs in the neighborhood I have proven to be the champion fetcher in town. I am so good at catching the ball in the air aft er a single bounce. All the neighborhood children come running toward me, chanting my name, begging to play fetch with me. I am so cute that my dad even thinks I should be in the movies.

How far we have all come. Our family has even adopted a canine brother for me named Sparky. Sparky is a bit older and smaller than me and even though I try to act like I’m boss, big bro really does have dominance

over me. But we really love each other.

My feline sisters and I are much closer. Two of them toler-ate me and they even sleep close to me once they know I’m relaxing for the evening. My third feline sister is very close to Sparky and I. She likes to fl irt with us and rub faces with us. But when we least expect it she sneaks in and bites our cheeks!!

Our family has even bought 70 acres of land to spend our weekends at and Sparky and I chase squirrels all day! Our collars work for a mile so when it’s time to come back to camp for supper mom and dad just beep us. Life couldn’t be bet-ter.

When we are at home during the week we have a huge king bed that Dad, Mom, Sparky, my three sisters, and I all fi t on very comfortably every night. Sometimes dad and mom are on the edges but they don’t seem to mind . I like to cuddle under the blanket and share my dad or mom’s pillow.

Thank you SCARS for fi nding me such a great home and family that loves me more than anything! I love them too!

Tails From Home

Our little“Christmas”Story

T’was three weeks before Christmas, and down in a pipe a little kitten screamed for someone to help.

Out he was pulled all dirty and wet, his trip to the pound...we guess...was quite the event.

“This kitten needs surgery!” is what we were told, so we took him in promptly as part of our fold.

He needed a name and so much more, so we called him “Christmas” it suited him so.

Our supporters got busy, raised funds for his meds, as visions of “Christmas” danced through their heads.

It’s one year later and “Christmas” is strong, thanks to the McFadyen Family who gave him his home.

So to all of those who joined in the fi ght, you did save “Christmas” and this little one’s plight.

With open hearts and open homes...help save the souls who survive all alone.

May this season be fi lled with love and light.

Happy Holidays to all...and to all a goodnight!

When I was called Gypsy I didn’t think that my name would refl ect my life. I’m not telling anything about my life before I ended up at the pound, but

what I can tell you is I wandered a lot. I’ve learned now that staying at home is the best policy and that the big outdoors is not for me.

I came into SAFE Team and progressed leaps and bounds in my socialization skills. Yes, I am prett y and being so I was adopted into a great home, but there was small children that I had to deal with. What I found was I couldn’t cope but had the advantage of a safe place in the basement where I could chill out and relax. Everything was well until the day my family moved.

Our new house did not have a basement and not only did my whole world tun upside down my safe place was also gone. It was then that I started to pull the hair from my tail in an eff ort to relieve my stress. It got to the point that I also started to chew on it too. My family did not know what to do so they contacted SAFE Team who said it would be bett er if I came back into care.

I am again a foster with SAFE Team aft er having to have an inch or so of my tail amputated to stop any infection arising from my stress induced behaviour. When I fi rst arrived at my foster, I was shy and terribly “out of sorts” I didn’t want to

eat and the kennel that had been provided to me as my safe place was defi nitely that, as I didn’t come out of it for a week when anyone was around.

Today, with time and patience, I am a new cat. I no longer chew on my tail and it has healed nicely. I’m just waiting for my hair to grow back in. I absolutely love being paid att ention to so much so I will rub up against you especially for chin rubs and ear scratches. I have also found my inner voice…a tiny meow but I don’t talk too much. One of my cutest traits when I’m happy is to lift my front feet in a slow-motion kneading action. I will even perform when I eat.

My foster mom tells me all the time that I am a very nice girl with a super disposition. I would never dream of scratching or causing a fuss. I still sleep in my litt le carrier instead of out in the open but on a much more comfy bed and hope-fully with time I will feel secure enough to laze around in the house.

My wish this holiday season is to go to my forever home where there is love, patience and understanding for a girl like me that has had many experiences in my life. I’m sorry I can’t handle children but it is too much stress for me, but other four-legged friends are a blessing. Please think about me – Gyspy. Please contact SAFE at (780) 819-2679.

Hello, my name is Alina and I was found abandoned in a box, very pregnant, in the country. Luckily a Good Samaritan res-cued us and called NASAP which has given us a chance to have a real forever home.

Seasons Greetings! My name is Lilly and I am a very sweet girl with a stunning black coat. I am about 2yrs old and very gentle. I love getting attention and a quiet forever home would be my idea of heaven.

My name is Padme. I’m a great 1yr old mother to my two beloved kittens, but they are grow-ing up quick and
