Welcome to PRM!

As the year ends and a new one begins, we are reminded about all we

are grateful for. Our connection with our readers, advertisers and the Alberta rescue organizations are treasured and we sincerely thank you for helping us to continue exposing the joys of rescue!

There are hundreds and hundreds of amazing volunteers who give their time and open their hearts and homes to rescued pets in Alberta. We would like to highlight a volunteer each issue and we need your assistance! Help us recognize some of the many volun-teers who work tirelessly and sacrifi ce so much for Alberta’s forgott en and unwanted pets. Send us a brief description highlighting why you think a volunteer should be acknowledged and we will get back to you for a picture and more information.

We wish you the best this holiday season and a joyous 2012!

Happy Holidays everyone! My name is Jersey and I’m so excited to be on the front cover for Christmas, but I would be even more excited if it meant I would be in my very own home for the holidays. I have a sister too, Milli, who would also

love to come with me if you have the space for both of us. She’s a real “looker” too! You can find more information on us when you get to page 13. Thanks for thinking rescue!

PET PROMISEThousands of years ago, we humans formed a covenant with our companion animals. We wanted them to live with us and to share our lives. Because of this our ‘pets’ lost most of their natural skills to fend for themselves. It then became our responsibility to feed and care for them. While the animals have kept their end of the bargain, we humans largely have not. ~ Unknown

Tail Of The Monthby Robyn Rosen

The Rescue of Belle and Sundance

by: Birgit Stutz and Lawrence Scanlan

Many people may recall a story that captured the att ention of the media three years ago - a story of two abandoned horses that had been left to starve atop B.C.’s Mount Renshaw in the Rocky Mountains. The horses, given the names Belle and Sun-dance, were emaciated, shivering and trapped within the six feet of snow blanketing the mountain. Locals of the nearby town of McBride were given a heartbreak-ing decision - end the horses’ inevitable suff ering with a gunshot, or feed them and devise a plan to save them. Those that followed the story as it unfolded know the fi nal outcome, but this book is much more than a two minute news story. It is a heart wrenching journey readers follow with their fellow Canadians who came together to save animals in need. Readers are trans-ported to the freezing cold Canadian wilderness where emotions and energy runs high and individuals lend sweat and tears to an impossible task. The passion of animal lovers resounds in this novel as the people of McBride pitched in to dig, by hand, the three-foot wide, six-foot deep, kilometre-long tunnel that became Belle and Sundance’s route to freedom.

The Rescue of Belle and Sundance takes readers up that starkly beautiful but bitt erly cold mountain to the

heart of the struggle to save two horses. In this account, with its grim beginning and its joyful end, the authors recreate

the rescue that sent a message of hope and compassion around the world. It is

proof that not all is hopeless in animal rescue - everyday people can come together

and give their time to change the fate of an animal in need.

I am a cute bay mare named Lila who came to Rescue 100 last January with 2 young horses that may be my foals. The volunteers

think that I am somewhere around 5 years old and although I may seem shy to some I’m actually very social and love people. My front knees are a bit turned in and it looks like I may have an old injury, so I am suitable as a companion horse only. I love to be out with the other horses and show my enthusiasm by running around with my tail held high.

My name is Wiggles and I’m a 4yr old Rotti/Basset Hound X. I have a sweet gentle nature and I’m not overly active but I love to play. I like other dogs, cats and kids. I

also walk well on leash and I’m already house-trained. Thunderstorms scare me a bit so I will need lots of snuggles….probably even when it’s nice out!

My name is Brody and I used my puppy dog eyes so they couldn’t resist spring-ing me from the pound. I’m a 3yr old Cocker/Poodle X, weighing about 25lbs,

who gets alone well with the resident dogs and cats in my foster home. I LOVE to bounce around and play outside but I’m very calm and well mannered inside.

I’m a 1.5yr old friendly Basset crossed with something very hairy. My name is Diesel and I came in terribly matted but I have since been shaved right down…I had no idea that I

was so handsome. Now I love to be touched and petted because it doesn’t hurt! I love kids and other dogs, and I am house trained to boot.

They call me Maggie May and I am a very calm & gentle Shepherd/Col-lie X around 7mths old. I only weigh about 35lbs so I don’t really expect to grow too much more.

My foster mom says I have good house man-ners and I love children. I’m great with other dogs and just want to cuddle and follow you around.

My name is Maddox and I am a handsome yellow Lab around 3yrs old. I love small dogs, big dogs children and just about everything life has to offer!!! I am very friendly, gentle and loving. If you are looking for the perfect companion to walk and jog with then I’m your guy.

Beagle Paws Rescue

My name is Dawkins…rather a nifty name don’t you think? I’m a cuddly 3yr old Beagle and I’m a tad overweight but that just means there’s more of me to love. I get along with most other dogs but would be just fine as the only dog…raking in all of the attention! Please join the Beagle Paw crew for Santa pictures with your pet at the Edmonton South Animal Hospital on December 3 or 4th. Please contact [email protected] to make an appointment.

My name is Baltazar and right below me is my sister Olga. We were found running around by ourselves and brought to the pound. We

love everyone and have the best manners for still being puppies. If you want a dog that loves the snow but also loves to snuggle up in your arms please adopt one of us!

Want to adopt a really funny girl? If you do then please come and meet me! My name is Tulip and I have a huge personality and love to play. I am very frisky and will chase

you around for hours! I promise to always greet you at the door and keep you laughing.

I’m Mozzarella. I was found at a landfill where I had given birth to 5 kittens. I was filthy when we came into care and given a bath almost instantly. I was also really shy but am now

learning that people are only here to care for me. If you want a soft shy loving girl who loves to snuggle please call soon!

Whitecourt Homeless Animal Rescue Foundation (WHARF)

I am Sushi and I came into care after being thrown onto the highway. I would really love a quiet home where I can get all the attention. I am good with other animals but I

really like to snuggle with my people so other pets may get jealous. I am also very pretty and have a perfect black mask.

My name is Drifter and I was dumped at a gas station. I was soooo hungry!!! I was trying to jump into everyone’s car but no one would let me in. Finally I found some nice

people to help me. They are so wonderful here… I get to eat whenever I want and they even brush my beautiful coat!

My name is Velveeta and this is my sister Feta. My sib-lings and I were rescued from a landfill with our mom but we are the only two littermates

left. We were so smelly and scared when we came in but now we are soft & clean little purr monsters!

I am Gingerale and I was born in the pound with my siblings. I am the biggest and fluffiest kitten of the litter. Pepsi is all black and super outgoing, and little Coke is the only boy out of the five of us. We are very social and love to play with everyone. If you have room in your home please come meet us!

My name is Alex and I have the cutest ears ever that sometimes like to stand straight up (it makes me look like a little fawn) and sometimes like to just flop right over. I am a very social

boy that loves to play and I am almost fully house trained. Please come and give me the best home ever.

I am a gor-geous Dober-man named Lula and I was rescued from a family that no longer had time for me. I am super sweet and I love to throw my stuffies in the air and

catch them. I have perfect manners… except for on the leash but I’m learning! I hope Santa visits me in my new forever home this year!

I’m Elmer and I am the sweetest and most gentle boy alive. There isn’t a mean streak in my body. I am also a pretty cool brindle color and have these huge ears which make

me REALLY cute!!! Please consider giving me a forever family, I have been waiting a really long time for you!

Deisel here! I have been here quite a while because my manners weren’t that good when I got here. These days I am super sweet, love to play with other dogs

and I am house & kennel trained. I will make a wonderful companion and promise to keep you smiling and feeling loved forever.

I am Tara and they tell me I am a Malinois Shepherd. I was very thin when rescued but I am now eating lots and putting on weight. I have so much more energy! I love other dogs but would not like to go to a home with cats. If you want a beautiful girl for a best buddy you should come and meet me.

While body modifi cation is a growing trend for humans, the practice of animal body modifi cation is a long with-standing tradition that was created for a specifi c purpose for working animals. In modern times the practice is in-creasingly argued worldwide, and banned in many coun-tries. The argument remains; Is it cruel to remove part of an animals’ body for the sake of what is considered fashion-able or traditional of specifi c breeds?

Tail docking is the cutt ing off or removal of an animal’s tail. The tradition originated in ancient Roman times where worms in the tail of a dog were incorrectly thought to cause rabies. The belief led to the cutt ing off of part of the tail as a preventative measure. As the centuries carried on tail docking was done for more practical reasons; in working animals such as cart horses and hunting dogs the tail was shortened to prevent it gett ing caught in the cart, fences, full of burrs and the like which could cause great pain and result in amputation later in life. In more recent times for dogs such as Boxers, Pit Bulls and Rotweilers, who were subjected to the cruel life of a fi ghting dog, the tail was docked to prevent the opponent dog from grabbing on to it in batt le. The trend may also have arose in non-working breeds due to the collection of “tail taxes” centuries ago in Europe, where a tax was charged to the owners of non-working dogs in the household. The distinguishing feature between a working and non-working dog was the presence of a tail, and many people would dock their dogs tails to avoid paying the tax.

These days the need to dock a dog’s tail is greatly de-creased due to dogs being used less in a working role and

being owned primarily as a companion animal. As such there is not a great risk to damaging their tail in day-to-day life. So why then do breeders and vets continue to carry out the act? Although in many countries it is considered cruel mutilation and is not allowed, in North America it is common of breeds such as Poodles, Rotweilers, Dober-mans etc to have their tails docked almost immediately aft er birth. The belief is that at such a young age there is no pain or discomfort to the animal and the wound heals more quickly and there is no sense of loss that a pup may feel if they receive the procedure at an older age aft er becoming accustomed to the natural uses of a tail. A primary reason breeders continue the practice is due to the American and Canadian Kennel Clubs breed standards, which means that dogs of certain breeds with undocked tails are presum-ably not eligible to show or will be docked points for not presenting the traditional look of a breed.

Many vets and animal specialists argue that it is detrimen-tal to the nature of a dog to remove it’s tail. The tail plays a huge role in communication with other dogs and with peo-ple, and a dog without a tail is signifi cantly handicapped in expressing fear, caution, aggression, playfulness and so on. Also many dogs use their tails for balance and direction for activities such as swimming and running which provides a disadvantage to dogs with docked tails while in mo-tion. These factors may lead to behavioural issues and an increase in harm coming to these dogs due to fi ghting with other animals (a result of lack of communication) .

The argument will remain, is tail docking a cruel and pain-ful mutilation of an animal or the preservation of history and fashion in the canine species? With countries such as Sweden having banned the act since 1989 and others such as Australia, Germany and Belgium having banned it in more recent years there seems to be a growing aware-ness worldwide. Time will tell if USA and Canada join the movement toward lett ing our beloved four legged friends live in their natural physical state as they were intended.

Julian aft er a month in his foster home. (Inset: Julian when fi rst rescued)

October 16th, 2011 was my very lucky day. I got rescued. On this evening, two women drove into my townsite on a First Nation’s community in central Alberta. As they stood with my owners – everyone calling my name – I just lay and huddled down for the night. They left in disappoint-ment as I did not come running out to my name. However, my owners kept calling me and I wandered over to check why I was being beckoned. My owners quickly texted my two guardian angels that I had been located. My life changed when they turned their SUV around to come back for me. By the time they got back I had wondered off again but this time I came running to my name being called - I could sense something diff erent in the air.

These two women got out of their SUV with a big package of meat chunks and they started off ering me some – this had never happened to me before and I did not know what to think except I wanted more. They tried to get me to jump into their SUV but aft er I failed a few times they lift ed me in and I got to ride in the front passenger seat all curled up because they already had a pregnant dog in a kennel in the back. To lie on a soft seat, to have a gentle hand pett ing me, and to have warm air blowing on me, was a litt le piece of heaven.

When I got to my foster home I got to meet one of the dogs in my home. I was so terrifi ed she was going to att ack me

Rocky! Rocky! Rocky! I could hear them calling my name but I was already curled up in a ball for the evening. The sun had already set on a cool autumn day and I was trying hard to conserve my energy and body heat. I was too tired and sore too move, too sad because my best friend had just died. Why would anyone be calling for me? They kept calling though. With obvious doubt, I unwound my gangly legs and decided to trot over to the voices calling my name – a decision that changed my life forever.

and I knew I just could not defend myself in my condition. I just kept hiding behind one of the women knowing they would protect me. I got to have several big bowls of water which was a real treat for me. I was quite full from the meat chunks so I did not eat too much food that evening. I personally prefer the raw beef to the hypoallergenic food they were trying to get me to eat.

I got to have a bath that fi rst evening and again these really kind people kept pett ing me even though my skin emitt ed a strong pungent smell and was covered in greasiness due to the demodectic mange I had. They talked very quietly to me so my fi rst bath went prett y good. It was actually a very quick bath because I hardly had any fur to wash. But I made sure to do lots of shaking aft er my bath just like a healthy dog would.

Although my name, Rocky, suited me in the fact that I had a rocky life, my new found two-legged friends felt I should have a new name for a new start. It was decided that I would go with the name Julian and every time I hear it now I come running, wagging my litt le stump of a tail as fast as I can.

As my story reads, I am a 3-4 year old surrendered boy from a First Nation’s community. I most likely have some Rott i and Shepherd in me. When I got rescued my skin was like leather – like elephant skin. My foster family and Rescue for Life patiently waited to see what color my fur was going to grow in and they are just starting to get a glimpse of that now.

I was rescued with a skin condition called demodectic mange. My skin had turned black due to how long I had the mange. It really is just a mite that all dogs have (even healthy ones) but because I was so malnourished my com-promised immune system could not keep everything in balance and these mites overtook me. I also had severe sec-ondary skin infections too and I was on antibiotics for four weeks but I have completed all my antibiotics now. This skin condition is caused by long-standing severe malnutri-tion and psychological stress. I did not have any type of survival instincts and with no food being provided I slowly went into very bad health. I also am missing my tail and it is believed that it was cut off when I was a baby - maybe because I looked like a Rott i puppy. I still wag it non-stop to show you that I am really happy!

Over the past month and a half I have been fed a gentle hypoallergenic diet and supplements to help build my immune system. I also had a month of antibiotics for my secondary skin infections. I received baths every two to three days from my foster family to help keep my skin clean and grease free. When I fi rst came in I would eat 8-10 cups of food everyday as my body could not process the food properly and much of it was going to waste; plus I

prm

had very wormy poop! Now, a month and half later, I eat a normal amount of food and I can even take treats gently. Of course, food remains my number one motivation and I will do anything for a treat.

In my stress free environment, I have thrived and been giv-en this amazing second chance at life. My fur has grown back in, my skin has turned back a normal pink color, and my personality shines brighter every day. I have learned to play, learned to lounge on a sofa, learned to go for walks, and learned that other dogs will not att ack me because I have people that will protect me. I have learned to live with cats, learned that I will always have a next meal, learned to live with gentle children, learned about hugs and kisses, and most importantly I have learned what it is to be loved. In return, I want to walk up to every person who off ers me a kind touch or a treat and give them a very gentle hug. However, I am reminded that I must stay on my four legs and I will get an even bigger hug. When you look into my eyes I think you see my appreciation – at least that is what I want you to see.

The saddest part of my story is that my best friend passed away just days before I was rescued due to the same condi-tion I had. My story is just one of many. My friends are waiting to come in too. Please consider becoming a foster home. Please consider making a donation. Please consider adopting a deserving rescued animal.

Hi! My name is Asiah and I’m a 6mth old sweetheart who wants nothing more than to be loved. Although a warm lap to lounge on and some toy mice would be an awesome bonus. I would do very well in a family home since I love children and enjoy a warm, loving home atmosphere.

Hi, my name is India. I love to play with toys and my absolute favourite is a little purple ball that I throw around and chase. I even play fetch with my foster mom! I really hope I get will be adopted soon to a great home...maybe even with my sister Asiah!

My name’s Lucille and I’m a friendly 1-2yr old Torti. I love men and I always seem to be following my foster dad around the house looking for more at-tention. I’m also very talkative, outgoing and affectionate –all at the same time! I will be your best buddy ever if you just give me a chance!

Hello there, I’m Smokey and I’m 2-3yrs old. I have beautiful long hair and I’m quite outgoing. I am also very brave and love to explore my surroundings. I’ve just received a clean bill of health, but I will require a special urinary tract health diet for the rest of my life.

I’m Steve and I’m a 4-5yr old gentleman. I enjoy greeting you at the door and I love to cuddle before supper. I’m a gentle guy and love to be handled or just lounge on your lap. I also adore being groomed. If this sounds like a match for you we may just be made for each other!

My name is Ludo and I came from an animal shelter up north where I had been surrendered. I was very scared and confused at first but I’m doing better. I’m still a little suspicious of people but I do great with other dogs. I am 2yrs old and very grateful to be in a place where I am cared for.

My name is Duke and I am a beautiful 1yr old Plott Hound. I am well social-ized, good with children and I have lots of energy. I would love a canine com-panion in my new home…I hate being alone! If you have an active lifestyle and are looking for a lovable young dog to join your family, please come meet me.

My name is Teddy and I am a great dog. I am friendly and get along fine with other dogs. I also travel well and I am well behaved in the house. I do not chase the livestock but I will need a fenced yard because I like to explore. I have been good with the children here so far and I make everyone laugh when I howl at the coyotes!

I’m Diesel! I am a 3yr old Border Collie X looking for a new home to call my own. I have grown up around children and I get along with everyone. I have basic obedience (although I could use a refresher!) and I’m already housetrained. I have a happy go lucky personality and will definitely make you smile every day!

Hey, Dawson here. I am a friendly and sensitive 2yr old Shepherd X. I get along with everyone and am generally a very thoughtful & intelligent guy. I need some work on my manners because I jump up when excited but I’m ready to learn your rules. If you are looking for a very handsome & sweet boy like me please call today.

Sundance Canine Rescue

www.sundancecaninerescue.com ~ (780) 892-3512

My name is Flynn and I am looking for a new family this Christmas. I am a Coonhound X with lots of love and en-ergy to share. I love to play and would really enjoy another young dog in my new home. If you have an active home where I could join you in your activities please consider adopting me!

They call me Sheriff. I was recently re-turned to Sundance due to unknown al-lergies in the family. They loved me and did not want to let me go. They even considered having me as an outdoor dog but I like the indoors and it was best I find a new home. I ADORE kids and love playing ball. I am just a big teddy bear of a dog!

My name is April and I was found terri-fied along a highway with some other dogs. I am a happy girl who loves to please. I like to be the boss when it comes to all the

canines but I take correction well. I need a loving home that knows how to be the boss.

I am called Au-tumn and was rescued with my puppies. I am a soft and gentle girl who loves to play with other dogs and I’m good with cats too. I also love to snuggle up

–especially with children! I am great in doors and always keep everyone amused.

My name is Foxy and all I want for Christmas is a new home. I am very shy but very badly want to be loved by you. I am just getting used to being treated with love...turns

out I really enjoy it! I would make a great addition to any family.

Please check our website for information on our many adoption events and Santa Photos!

ChristmasI’ll be home for

You can count on me...as long as you feed & water me, exercise & play with me, pott y and kennel train me, teach me my basic com-mands and of course love me forever…we should be good to go!

We are well worth the eff ort but please make sure you have the time and patience if you are thinking of adopting a young puppy.

The unknown reality is that adult rescues are truly AMAZING and usually a lot less work. You also know ahead of time how big they will be, their general temperament and if in foster care you will likely learn all about their habits and how they get along with other pets and people.

By adopting a rescued adult a lot of work and uncertainty can oft en be bypassed if it does not suit your lifestyle. If you really just want to spend some time with a puppy (they are prett y cute!) please consider fostering instead. Puppies are oft en like grandchildren, always very loved but best appreciated when you know they will eventually be going home!

I’m Lady. I am a 1yr old Border Collie X who is very friendly, active and smart. I love toys and I am good with other dogs...but I still like trying to play with cats. I love

going for runs and have a sweet personal-ity. I would do well in something like agility or flyball and need to stay active.

My name is Striker and I still have a lot of spunk for being an old fella! I am a 12yr young black Lab and I’m FINALLY learning what it’s like to have a loving family and a warm comfortable place to sleep... sure beats the concrete one I had in my previous life at a puppy mill.

Hi there I’m ACE. I am a very smart 2yr old Basset/Lab/Pug X. I am a great dog and I love to run and play. I love attention and I’m quite eager to please. I know how to sit and shake on command, and even come when called - most the time! I also get along well with other dogs.

Levi here, I am 8yrs old. I am an affectionate Golden Retriever and I behave very well. I’m not too fond of horses and I will chase cats but I love to play with other dogs. I prefer not to be left alone and do have some anxiety issues, but I’m working on them.

My name is Sammy and I am a beautiful 1yr old American Eskimo X who loves children. I also enjoy playing with other dogs and I’m already housetrained. I am a very loyal pup...now all I need is a loving family to adore forever. Do you have room in your home for my sunny personality?

My name is Moses and I am a handsome little guy that likes lots of room to run around & play. I am super friendly & will never turn down a good head rub. I would do well with another bunny in my new home and my favourite activity is digging & tearing up newspapers!

I am a friendly girl named Cupid who can be a little shy at times but I do like attention. My brother Comet & I have become really attached and he is probably one of the friendliest boys here. We can spend hours snuggling next to each other and we both love dried papaya treats!!!

I am not from the north pole, but I lived outside before I was rescued from an industrial park. My name is Sox because I have one white paw. I would do well with another female who is more on the bossy side. I was a little chubby for a while but I’ve toned down...what can I say, I love my groceries!

I can’t understand it, why I am still here? My name is Theo and I’m so sweet. Everybun that comes & visits falls in love with me because I am so SUPER friendly and I just adore attention. I also love toys and of course plenty of room to run around & play like my brother Moses.

They call me Thea and I was recued with my Mommy Tess. I am a gentle & loving 1yr old sweet-heart who is eager to please. I am only 17” high and about 25lbs…a great

size. I would really LOVE a home with another dog to help build up my confidence.

Amos here! I am a 6mth old little boy who was found in an industrial yard. Everyone thought I was wild, but I had news for them. I decided I didn’t want that kind of life, so when I was returned to live with my mother I would not leave my crate at the yard. The lady decided I needed a home so she brought me back and I have been living in foster-care since. I turned out to be a sweet boy that will make you smile everyday!

My name is Bobby. I was born in the back of an abandoned car. I was wild when I was caught but now I am very friendly. Can you believe I love to be cuddled like a little baby? I am 5mths old so I’m still growing. Even though Amos and I are not blood brothers we play together all the time. He taught me it was ok to trust humans. I love Amos, it sure would be nice to go to a new forever home with him.

I am sponsored by The Siebert Family Thank you!

Aries: March 21 - April 19Sorry Aries, bad news...many of you are due for your annual check up and shots.

Try to thank your two-leggers for caring when it’s all said and done.

To all the little Taurus ferrets out there causing a ruckus - it’s time to relax and

quit the hissing, chirping & chatter. No one likes a complainer.

You may visit the vet again this month but don’t get upset. You will be better

Most everyone is up for a good roll around in something smelly, but keep

your paws clean this season or you will be missing out on cuddles.

Whether the dog keeps eating your food or your people have placed you in a

Keep careful watch over finances. Money will be tight and if you don’t plan ahead,

you may have to make dents in your nest egg.

Get up to speed on your manners... you must be ready to seize opportunity when

it knocks & you will need everyone’s support.
