UK Country Committee David Schofield, MD OSRAM UK, is the new Leader of the UK Country Committee. He takes over from Martyn Coffey who left Pirelli at end March. Many thanks to Martyn for his excellent support over the term of his office and many thanks to David Schofield for agreeing to take up the reins.

KPIs New Registrations: 1,000 target registrations; 1120 registrations incl manufacturers (now 28,126

in total) Newsletter circulation: 18,382 at end March Opt out : Only 21 in total (similar figure to February 2005) (ie less than 2% -

very pleasing and showing that our revised registration procedure is showing positive results.

Page Views: 191,000 logged in target page views. A nice growth on February but

considerably helped by our Easter Egg hunt competition which helped to counterbalance the long Easter holiday.

Logins: 13,415 Page views per login: 11.35 Distinct Visitors: 4,791 (17.0% of registered users & 26% of active users) Recurrent Visitors: 2,149 (7.6% of registered users & 12% of active users) Weekly Users: 583 (2.0% of registered users - an improvement on February but still lots to be done) Comments on KPIs In general we are very happy with all our performance indicators with the exception of our recurrent and weekly users. We are currently undertaking a test telephone campaign to opted-out users to see if we can encourage them to accept our newsletters. We are testing the Voltimum Toolbar with a view to launching this in May. We are finalising our Expert Area with a view to a June launch and we hope that these actions will encourage repeated use of the site. Voltimum events and meetings worthy of mention Kick-off meeting with Adaptaflex, Kopex & Elkay (new cable management partner part of Volution Holdings Group) Catalogue training for Kew Technik Electrical Distributors Association (EDA) Annual Dinner in London - special mention for Voltimum by David Schofield of OSRAM Winner of Voltimum UK News Excellence Awards To encourage best use of Voltimum’s news content management system by all our manufacturing partners, we ran a competition for the best news items loaded onto the site for publication in March's VoltiNEWS. We were not judging content, rather we were trying to find the companies that were making best use of the tools available to them on Voltimum: adding attachments, extra images, links and contact details.

  • Voltimag#04/05 8 / 8

By using all Voltimum’s editing tools, manufactuers could win 29 points. For extra efforts, bonus points were awarded. 1st position: OSRAM (37) Top performance in colour and stamina: OSRAM LUMILUX) 2nd position: Pirelli (33) FP Firefix provides Maxx-imum speed at the Bullring 3rd position: Merlin Gerin(27) Primary switchgear from Merlin Gerin that is quick and easy to install 4th position: ITW / SPIT (26) Taking the strain out of Cordless Nailing: Pulsa tools safe & easy to use These companies made the best use of Voltimum's news content management system and clearly know how to maximise opportunities for their companies by adding extra images, links, attachments etc. drawing users to other items of news and their catalogue. It was a very tight call between OSRAM and Pirelli for first position. Both companies did a great job. The reason that OSRAM clinched it was that it used more photos and attachments than Pirelli. An excel sheet containing the points awarded by category and by company was forwarded to each company to help them improve in future. Easter Egg-stravaganza – the great Easter Egg Hunt In the week running up to Easter, we ran an Easter Egg Hunt. An image of an Easter Egg was hidden in one news article on the home page of Voltimum. As a special reward to the 4 companies winning the news excellence award, their items were chosen : OSRAM Monday, Tuesday Pirelli, Wednesday Merlin Gerin & Thursday ITW/SPIT. This action proved to be a very successful method of encouraging users to read through many news items on the home page and to visit the site more frequently.

Over the four days, the action generated 42,500 extra page views as users read through news items looking for the egg. We had an average of 240 entries to the competition each day and 75 users visited on all four days. We plan to make this an annual competition.

Wholesalers AIEW & IBA branches were added to wholesaler directory and partner section in March. We believe we now have in excess of 70% of the wholesale industry our directory.

  • Voltimag#04/05 9 / 9

Over the past few weeks we have been updating the directory (the wholesalers are very bad about informing us of changes to their branch details) We have also tried to make the BOM process very simple to use. We hope to make the wholesaler slightly more proactive in his promotion and use of the site We will be offering two services to the wholesaler: the Voltinewsfeed and the VoltiLINK and will try to have a greater Votlimum presence in the wholesaler outfits. These services will be charged, with a view to increase our external revenues sources. 5th April 05 - Together with OSRAM, Paul Harwood visited Clearlight wholesalers in the Midlands. Osram brought along the OSRAM Mini which is the grand prize in a promotion they are running – the promotion is also open to Voltimum users.

17th March 05 Wholesaler day in Edmundson Bristol with ABB

Other marketing & roadshow events PH attended the Electrical Roadshow in Sandown on 8th March - assisted by OSRAM and Pirelli. This is likely to be the final paid-for regional event of the year. Paul will now concentrate his efforts on getting buy-in from the wholesalers.

This new 2-day industry event will take place in November 2005 and Voltimum is a supporter. We were given a special mention at the launch event. 4th April 2005 Expert meeting held at Voltimum offices in Hammersmith. At the meeting we presented the improved version of the Expert Advice area which we hope to launch in June following a meeting with the Marketing Committee. We made great progress in finalising categories and sub-categories for questions and in getting very good feedback on how the system might be improved with some small technical changes. We also presented the CPD area and are still waiting for content for this area from some of our manufacturing partners. Technical Currently testing the toolbar with a view to a launch in May. Other Many thanks to Nicolas Frances from Voltimum Geneva who spent three days in London to support UK Technical Development We are currently understaffed and looking for a part-time marketing assistant.

Germany Country Committee Meeting We had our Country Committee Meeting end of March in Heidelberg. Adalbert Neumann, ABB, who had been nominated into the Executive Committee of Voltimum in December last year, has handed over the leadership of the German Country Committee to Peter Vogelberg. Peter Vogelberg is working as sales director with ABB Stotz-Kontakt / Striebel & John GmbH (ASJ). Elmar Ender handed over position of Country Manager to Christian Szczensny. Elmar is leaving Voltimum mid of year to one of Voltimum’s local partners.

Traffic Traffic resumed on a high level and could even be increased by about 10%. Weekly users are still weak, though slowly increasing.

Sweden Traffic Qualified Page Views by Month

  • Voltimag#04/05 13 / 13

We have a nice increase in traffic this spring. The toughest challenge is weekly users, but now that we have focused on this key performance indicator we can see that we are definitely going in the right direction. Weekly Users by Month

Revenue sources Gold memberships We have now started our subscription sales campaign. We do not want to loose traffic so our news section is still open for free members. We charge 150 euro for a one year gold membership. Gold members have access to all content in the portal. The functions that we are going to highlight in the marketing communication are the new technical file function and consulting by our expert panels. The campaign has just started and we have only sold a few gold memberships so far, but we have the big Elfack fair coming up in the end of the month so we have high hopes. Employment service We have a new Employment partner in Sweden. Cavotec sells motorised cable reels, rail clips and pads, Panzerbelt cable protection systems, slipring columns, aircraft support systems, special flexible cables, spring driven reels, industrial plugs and sockets, cable chain systems, radio remote controls, permanent elevators and automated mooring systems. They now use Voltimum for recruiting new talents. Marketing

PR We have placed another article written by our new expert panel for tele and data in the magazine Elektrikern.

Elfack fair The preparations for the important Elfack fair are now more intensive than ever. With the strong support that we get from our partners we are confident that this fair will be a huge success.

Newsletters We sent tree newsletters in March with a very good response from the readers. We have sent two of three in April.

Weekly user emailing We sent a special email to stimulate people to visit the portal an extra time. It turned out to be quite effective but this is not anything we can do every month.

  • Voltimag#04/05 14 / 14

    April fools' joke

We sent an extra newsletter telling the whole industry that Sweden is now switching to British outlets. The bad news was that the installer that once mounted the outlet must now switch it to a British one for free. We had a well known line up of people commenting the news.

    William Persäter Expert in standards

Hans Enström General manager Installers federation

    Anders Nyberg General manager ELKO

Inga Lundström Government representative Doesn’t really exist

Installers who didn’t want to finance the switch of outlet could apply for exemption on our telephone hotline. We received lots of emails and people called and laughed on the hotline the whole day. Portal development LVI catalog The LVI catalogue is now online. This is a very good start for us on our way to a complete indoor climate catalogue. Spain Results March 05 We had total qualified pages views March 05’ Voltimum Spain: 282,729 pages (without counting pages viewed by anonymous neither manufacturers) counting anonymous: 381,909 pages.
