Deacon Council Update Deacon Rich Heineman

Greetings from your Deacon Council. As I am sure you are

aware from recent mailings, your Deacon Council has been at

work with a very full schedule. As requested, we have com-

pleted a final draft of the Constitution for the Deacon Council

of the Archdiocese and we are awaiting approval. The ‘Servant’

newsletter is obviously back on line and (I am sure that you will

agree) very comprehensive. The Council is now exploring ideas

regarding the structure of the diaconate deanery system. There

have been several ideas put forth and we are weighing the vi-

ability of each in order to revive the system for the mutual

benefit of the community.

tional Association of Diaconate Directors (NADD) con-

vention this past April. Archbishop Carlson’s topic:

“Make Me a Channel of Your Peace: The Deacon as an

Instrument of Charity”. The response was so positive

that Deacon Michalak is researching how to make the

DVD available to those interested…stay tuned. Prior to

lunch we had time for quiet reflection and the Priests of

the Retreat Center offered the sacrament of Reconcilia-

tion. The afternoon was left open for classes to gather,

prayer in the Chapel with simple exposition of the

Blessed Sacrament or simply to rest and recharge indi-

vidually.

The Most Reverend Bishop Lee Piché joined us as the

celebrant for the vigil Mass of the Feast of Christ the

King. Deacons of the Mass were Steve Maier and Jim

Bauhs, Acolytes were Deacons Larry Lawinger and Mike

Nevin, the Lector was Deacon Jim DeShane. Following

dinner Bishop Piché shared his thoughts on Joy and the

role of the Deacon. The community gathered in the

chapel for sung Evening prayer led by Deacon Smisek.

The day concluded with another opportunity for the com-

munity to

gather for

sharing of

snacks, bev-

erages and

stories.

There was even a late night card game!

Sunday morning

dawned to another

gorgeous day of

weather and fellow-

ship. The chapel was

once again the site of

Morning Prayer, led

by Deacon Tom

Quayle.

As in years past the

staff of Christ the

King fed us very well and we were not disappointed with

Sunday breakfast either.

(Continued from page 1) The morning session was split into three parts which all

built upon each other.

Diaconate in the Archdiocese: The Archbishops

Four Requests and Where We Are in the Process.

1. Review and rewrite as necessary the Gov-

erning Documents of the Deacon Council

2. Effectively implement the aspirancy in the

Institute for Diaconate Formation

3. Clarify the roles of the Office of Clergy Ser-

vices and the Director of Diaconate

4. Review the Deacon assignment process

Small Group Listening Session with directed ques-

tions;

What are the greatest challenges facing the

diaconate in our Archdiocese?

What are the greatest opportunities before

the diaconate in our Archdiocese?

What are the greatest challenges facing me

as deacon?

What are the greatest opportunities before

me as a deacon?

As I listen, what dimensions of “being dea-

con” or “wife of deacon” are opening up to

me?”

Large Group Listening Session: reports from small

groups and where we go from here.

Discussion was phenomenal and covered a wide range

of subjects, reflective of the community assembled.

Deacon Michalak will send a follow up report on the

discussion to the entire community. The formal session

was closed with a blessing, and the community prayed

the following;

Holy Mary, Mother of God,

you have given the world its true light,

Jesus, your Son – the Son of God.

You abandoned yourself completely

to God’s call

and thus became a wellspring

of the goodness which flows forth from Him.

Show us Jesus. Lead us to Him.

Teach us to know and love Him,

so that we too can become

capable of true love

and be fountains of living water

in the midst of a thirsting world.

Does the aspirancy

work? More than one aspirant

reports that each Saturday is

Please remember the aspirant,

more about the vocation of the

Each course is three evenings

and one Saturday morning de-

signed for prayer, presentation,

about the formation process,

and how to apply. It is a mini-

discernment process in itself.

Husbands and wives should

sixty men attended; many are

aspirants.

Diaconate Survey

and Post-Ordination

Formation Surveys Thank you to all who

responded to the lengthy

“Diaconate Survey” based on

the Congregation for Clergy

questions. The responses were

many and varied and obviously

often heartfelt. The data, com-

bined with the results of our

small group and large group

feedback times on the Commu-

nity Weekend, together suggest

that the diaconate community

is long overdue in gathering for

prayer, conversation, and fel-

lowship. If you missed the

Community Weekend, you

missed a significant time to-

gether, but we also need to

provide more time for the

“family” simply to be with one

another. The number one

“challenge to diaconate” listed

on the survey was “Lack of

understanding between differ-

ent generations of deacons

formed under different expec-

tations.” This is a reality we

have to face. The May 18

Community Prayer and Din-

ner is the next scheduled time

for all of us to be together.

Although the

Archbishop has already seen

the initial survey results and we

have responded to the Congre-

gation for Clergy, surveys con-

tinue to trickle in. I will there-

fore write up a more complete

summary and response for you

in the new year.

Please continue to

send in your “Post-Ordination

Formation Surveys,” as these

will help Fr. Williams and I put

together some concrete possi-

bilities beginning in February.

Liturgical tune-up and singing

the new Missal, preaching the

marriage amendment and the

Catholic understanding of mar-

riage, virtue formation, the

New Evangelization, Verbum

Domini, Scripture study, and

bioethics all garner much sup-

port as priorities for further

formation. Thank you!

The Diaconate Office Though we no longer

have a formal “diaconate of-

fice,” much of diaconate busi-

ness is now being run through

the Institute for Diaconate For-

mation at the St. Paul Seminary

where we now hold Council

meetings and just about all

other diaconate-related activi-

ties. Mrs. Patty McQuillan is

our most capable part-time

administrator (shared with
