Station Models & Weather Maps

When Meteorologists gather data from earths surface. It is recorded on a mp using a combination of symbols. Forming a station model.

A station model is a symbolic illustration showing the weather occurring at a given reporting station. Meteorologists created the station model to plot a number of weather elements in a small space on weather maps. Maps filled with dense station-model plots can be difficult to read, but they allow meteorologists, pilots, and mariners to see important weather patterns.

A computer draws a station model for each observation location. The station model is primarily used on surface-weather maps, but can also be used to show the weather aloft. A completed station-model map allows users to analyze patterns in air pressure, temperature, wind, cloud cover, and precipitation.

Station model plots use an internationally-accepted coding convention that has changed little since August 1, 1941. Elements in the plot show the key weather elements, including temperature, dew point, wind, cloud cover, air pressure, pressure tendency, and precipitation.

Television weather reports represent weather conditions with smiling suns, rainy clouds and flashing bolts of lightning. In studying the weather we need to know where it is raining and where it is sunny, the wind speed and direction, humidity, visibility, pressure and temperature. To understand the weather we need to know how these meteorological variables are changing and how they relate to one another. To understand these relationships it is best to represent weather variables in a simple graph. Smiling suns do not contain enough information about the weather. On the other hand too many numbers drawn on a single map presents a confusing picture. Weather conditions observed at a city or town are best represented on a map using the station model.

Pressure areas are drawn as circles with the word high or low in the middle of the circle. Fronts are drawn as lines and symbols.

A weather map is a tool used to display information quickly showing the analysis of various meteorological quantities at various levels of the atmosphere. Maps using isotherms show temperature gradients, which can help locate weather fronts. Isotach maps, analyzing lines of equal wind speed, on a constant pressure surface of 300 mb or 250 mb show where the jet stream is located. Two-dimensional streamlines based on wind speeds at various levels show areas of convergence and divergence in the wind field, which are helpful in determining the location of features within the wind pattern. A popular type of surface weather map is the surface weather analysis, which plots isobars to depict areas of high pressure and low pressure. Special weather maps in aviation show areas of icing and turbulence.

We use news to tell us the weather so we know what to expect for tomorrow and the week ahead.
