The only guaranteed, long-lasting, high energy lamp designed specifically for Waters 2487 and 996/2996 Detectors
Waters PerformancePLUS™ long-life deuterium detector lamps were co-developed by
Waters Corporation and Hamamatsu Photonics, K.K. They are exclusively available from
Waters and cannot be sourced elsewhere. While it is possible to purchase non-Waters
lamps for your Waters detector, there are significant differences in quality and design
that can impact detector performance. A PerformancePLUS lamp from Waters represents the
modifications and testing that each lamp goes through once it is received from Hamamatsu.

system performance. Waters PerformancePLUS Long-Life Deuterium Detector Lamps are
specifically designed for use with Waters detectors to ensure long-life, cost-effective performance.
Waters lamps offer many proprietary features not found in alternative lamps.
exclusive capacitor box design for reliable startingWaters lamp capacitors are built into the cable
so it stays cool and does not degrade over time.
This construction ensures reliable ignition of the
deuterium arc lamp for superior lifetime performance.

Array (PDA) Detectors are certified for Canadian,
European, and U.S. safety requirements with the
Waters PerformancePLUS Long-Life Deuterium
Detector Lamp included as part of the detector
design. Certification requires user-accessible wires
that experience high voltage to be double insulated.
Use of alternative lamps without certification may
compromise product safety. See Figure 2.

system resulting from use of alternative lamps is not covered under the Waters product warranty.

Waters’ lamp design continues to evolve and currently includes
these differentiating features:
n Precision alignment and tolerances applied to arc point
within the lamp housing, based on optical analysis of the
detector, to provide maximum performance. No other lamp
manufacturer has knowledge of Waters proprietary optical
design characteristics.
n Directly heated cathode for greater stability in single beam
instruments (996/2996 PDA Detector lamps).
n Consistent cathode coating for improved stability.
n Precision-machined base and proprietary design to interface
with Waters detector lamp housing for optimum performance.
n Inorganic ceramic bonding cement to minimize degradation
of lamp intensity. Alternative lamps often use epoxy adhesives
that can damage optics, resulting in very costly repairs.
See Figure 3.
Over time, the heat generated from a lamp can cause inferior bond-
ing materials to outgas, leaving a coating of contaminants on the
lamp housing window and optics bench mirror. These contaminants
can lead to premature failure of the mirrors and other optical
components due to corrosion from these contaminants interacting
with moisture and chemical vapors in the environment. See Figures
4 and 5.

rigoroUS T eST ing for reLiAbLe PerformAnC eWaters conducts extensive testing to better understand lamps
and lamp life. Waters selects a specific lamp design and then
initiates Lamp Robustness Testing, which includes life, shock,
internal lamp structure, ignition reliability, and radiant intensity
distribution testing.
Lamps also go through additional assembly and Quality Assurance
(QA) tests, including lamp alignment, intensity, and signal-to-
noise. This testing ensures an overall field failure rate of <0.1%
and an unmatchable fit for Waters instruments.
Lamp robustness TestingWaters dedicates extensive reliability resources to perform lamp
lifetime studies. In partnership with our lamp manufacturer, all
possible scenarios that can happen in your lab are tested to provide
you with optimum performance you need to succeed. Waters
development and testing has led to lamp advancements that
improve robustness and life. Degradation from shock and vibration
has been reduced due to lamp improvements. Figures 6 and 7 illus-
trate the longer lifetime, increased light intensity, and decreased
noise resulting from Waters lamps cathode improvements.

Detector Lamps have a guaranteed minimum life-
time of 2000 hours; however, data shows that these
lamps can perform up to 3000 hours.
Lamps can suffer damage when started or running.
Waters lamp design ensures that multiple lamp
strikes will not harm the lamp. As a result, you
can turn off a Waters lamp when not acquiring
data, significantly reducing the cost per sample
analyzed. Figure 8 illustrates the high sensitivity
that can be achieved with a Waters lamp.
Figure 6. Signal Degradation. Waters lamps provide 2000 hours of warranty life; however, data shows that these lamps can provide up to 3000 hours of lamp life.
