Inauguration : Friday, September 26, 2014 at 11: 45 am Inaugural Address Shri President- Group HR & Corporate Services Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., Mumbai Rajeev Dubey Presidential Address Shri Anil Shastri Former Union Minister & Chairman LBSIM, Delhi Speakers Globalization has ushered in a plethora of opportunities as well as challenges for business. The increased pace of changes triggered by technology, profitable growth and customer demands has placed the workforce competence and organizational capabilities at centre stage. In recent times, many initiatives have become critical to the firm success – such as, quality, re-engineering, value creation, process improvement, core competence, business innovation and so on. Central to these initiatives are the ways organizations develop their human capital – in terms of competencies including knowledge, skills and attitude, social and personality traits, creativity and cognitive abilities, etc. Developing and leveraging these capabilities and competencies will lead to business excellence and sustainable and inclusive growth. The challenge is to step back from the administrative, transactional and policy elements of HR work and think about the organization's strategy for business excellence. HR professionals need to be partners, players, pioneers, leaders, catalysts and architects in the work of production of economic value through development of human capital. Developing human capital requires creating enabling environment in which organizations focus at effective talent management practices, and also develop the internal talent pool. Crafting strategies for talent development and workforce engagement, leveraging technology for talent acquisition, retention, performance management, learning and development, competency development, coaching and training are some of the key areas that need ideation, discussion and deliberation for finding out sustainable responses to various challenges. In the coming years, organizations would require strong institutional mechanisms in place to strengthen the organizational strategies for developing human capital. The role of the HR has to be looked at more in terms of responsibility flowing from the strategic needs of business. Consequently, HR professionals need to move in sync with the CEOs of organizations to understand the business and its challenges, as well as to be able to translate business strategies into human resource plans, systems and processes. HR must continue to gain ground as the Chief People Strategist by providing attraction and retention techniques that create an employer-of- choice environment. Simultaneously, HR must demonstrate a measurable ROI on human capital. Some critical trends that will continue to present both challenges and opportunities for the HR and HRIS professionals over the next decade include becoming the employer of choice, winning the war for talent, contributing to the organization as a strategic business partner, cultivating leadership through e-learning and development, recognizing the workforce as a profit centre, thinking globally while complying locally, incorporating flexibility and adaptability into the organization and embracing technology as the underlying facilitator. The HR Conference (2014) being organized by LBS Institute of Management is intended to enable professional exchange of ideas, discover new trends and critical knowledge for developing appropriate strategies and programmes for developing human capital that can sustain the business excellence. Introduction Objectives Ÿ To provide a forum where experts can provide an insight and share their experiences on the themes of the conference. Ÿ To provide a platform for networking of HR professionals and experts. Ÿ To bridge the gap between academia and industry through knowledge sharing in the arena of HR best practices.
