An intense program of activities has been organized to commemorate the 10th anniversary of thedeath of the artist Belkis Ayón (1967-1999).

Through 28 november: Nkame, anthological exhibition (1984-1999) of 83 works by the Belkis Ayón,an engraver of unanimously acknowledged technical virtuosity, who drew from collographs theirfullest potential in works in which the theme of Abakuá mythology, its secrets, its mysteries, its ritualceremonies and, above all, her “cursed” woman, recur over and over again, to encourage a reflectionon the recognition of ethnic and gender identification and warn of the evident or surreptitiousattempt to weaken them or manipulate them. The exhibition includes photographs which documentBelkis’s participation in different events.

6-10 October: Solo exhibition by Aliosky García, a graduate of engraving at the San Alejandro NationalAcademy of Fine Arts and a student al the National Arts Institute in Havana, winner of several prizesand special mentions in national arts salons.

27-31 October: Solo exhibition by de Anyelmaidelín Calzadilla, a graduate of the National ArtsInstitute in Havana and professor and head of the Engraving Department at the San AlejandroNational Academy of Fine Arts. Winner, among others, of the 2003 Unión Latina National Prize; andhonorary mentions at the 2005 Visual Arts: a Forward-Looking Approach (ECE), and the 10th La JovenEstampa Prize.

This retrospective of Raúl Santoserpa, one of the masters of abstraction in Cuba, is composed by28 large paintings on canvas or Bristol board from several stages in the artist’s creative life,spanning from 1996 to the present day. The curator of this exhibition, Hortensia Montero, an expertwith the Fine Arts Museum in Havana, has emphasized “[the painter’s] mastery in using theexpressive power of stains and the use of colour in a perfect drawing, within a spatial ambienceof disturbing figurations” and “the intimate way in which he gives each stroke a profoundlysensorial design that recreate sensual flora and fauna, which float above an underlying support ofa micro world [that he has] created at will.”
