June 4, 2017 Solemnity of Pentecost Happy Easter! As we continue to celebrate the Easter event and all the things that happen along the way we come to this day, Pentecost Sunday. The word Pentecost is from the Greek word “pentekostos” and it’s literally a translation of the word “fifty” or “fiftieth” day. It was significant to ancient Israel for it was the “Feast of First Fruits” called Shavuot. It was a day of celebration for the early harvest that enabled Israel to have sustenance until the greater fall harvest. Originally a harvest festival, it became a traditional Jewish celebration of the giving of the Law at Mount Sinai. Some churches today still celebrate this day as holy in the Eastern Orthodox, Anglican, Roman Catholic, and even some Lutheran churches. Pentecost comes fifty days after the Passover. Before Jesus’s Ascension into heaven, He instructed the disciples not to leave Jerusalem and to wait for the Holy Spirit, a gift from the Father. John had been baptizing with water, but they will be baptized with the Holy Spirit. When they were baptized with the spirit, the church began and could not exist without the Spirit. The Holy Spirit brought life to the church and so it does today. So, this is the anniversary of our church, the creation of church. Today’s scripture tells us about how the disciples were scared they would be put to death because of their association with Jesus. To keep themselves safe, they locked themselves into a room. When all seemed safe, their beloved friend Jesus stood in their midst. They were frightened (I would be) but the words Jesus used calmed their fears. He said, “Peace be with you”. He showed his hand and his side to assure that it was He. He went on to explain, “Peace be with you - as the Father has sent me, so I send you”. Finally, he breathed on them and said, “receive the Holy Spirit, whose sins you forgive are forgiven and whose sins you retain are retained”. Do you remember receiving the Holy Spirit? You received it once, at your baptism and again in the sacrament of Confirmation. Although you were not breathed on, you were anointed with the Sacred Oil of Chrism. Do you remember the words the bishop used at your confirmation? He said, “receive the Holy Spirit”. Then he said, “peace be with you”. My prayer today is with the Holy Spirit - that we are renew in faith and we may continue in this true church of Jesus Christ as he established it with his disciples. May the Peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all (and with your Spirit). Deacon Joe Garozzo 51 Follow us on @SCA856

Solemnity of Pentecost

Happy Easter!
