    imsTHE SHMAThe Sh'ma is an affirmation of faith. It both expresses our love for the Creator, and alsoserves as an ode to the divinity of the soul. It brings us into consciousness of the Onenessof Ain Sof, opening our awareness that the Creator is within and without.Before we begin the Shma, we must think about the concept of loving our neighbors aswe love ourselves. Kabbalah teaches that the Shma is the acknowledgement of unity andconnects us to Briyah, the World of Creation.

    The first verse of the Shma channels the energy of the Upper Worlds, also known as ZeirAnpin. The second verse expresses that energy in our world, known as Malchut. Wecover our eyes for the first line of the Shma. We emphasize the final letter dalet of thelast word "echad, which means one. The enlarged letters, ayin and dalet, combine toform the Hebrew word eid which means witness. This reminds us that we arewitnesses of the Light in this world and that the Creator desires unity for all humankind.

    Each of the following sections corresponds to one of the letters of the Divine Name andcontains a certain number of words. In the first we find 42 words that connect us to theAna Bchoach, in the second we find 72 words that connect us to the 72 Names of theCreator, the third section has 50 words which link us to the 50 gates of Light contained

    THE AMIDAH dcinr

    hdymiTHE AMIDAHThis section is the central and most personal part of our connection to the Light. Amidahliterally means standing. We stand during this series of prayers with our feet firmlytogether which imitates the angels, whom Ezekial perceived as having one straight leg. Itis important for us to remove all material thoughts from our minds. Naturally a personsbrain is active and wandering. The Amidah brings everything into focus. Through it, weconnect to Atzilut, the world of Ain Sof.

    Kabbalah teaches that the Shchinah is in exile and that the Light wants to share endlesslywith us. This cannot take place until we make a conscious effort to transform our reactiveego nature. Our desire to transform creates a vessel which is filled with the Light wereceive during the Amidah.

    As we begin, we take three steps backward that represent withdrawing our attention fromthe physical world. With complete concentration, we now take three steps forward as westep into the land of Israel, into the city of Jerusalem, and into the Kadosh Hakadashim(the Holy of Holies).

    Before beginning the blessings of the Amidah, we invite the Creators Light to speakthrough us. This assures that we request those things which bring us fulfillment and offer
