From the Principal... It was again a privilege to be a part of our annual Sports Day. The students conducted themselves very well and it was great to see the support of all runners in the 800m and one lap races. Thank you to everyone who supported the day in any way, particularly to Tony O’Connell for his organization, Matt Crewe for presenting the grounds in an impeccable fashion, and Lou and Cindy and the rest of the PVG for their efforts. The students can very proud of the way they participated and the house captains for their efficient organisation of their teams and events. One event which was missed in the presentations was the Max Croser team spirit award. The winning house was Rymill, who received an additional 10 points to their total for their efforts. It was very hard to choose this year! A full wrap-up of the event features later in this newsletter. identified and will be what staffing will be based on. We are hoping to have our staffing in place by the end of week 8 ready for a transition session in week 9. Remembrance Day

Tomorrow is Remembrance Day, so as a mark of respect, we acknowledged this event with a ceremony by the flagpole today. A number of students read poems or some of their writing about the day. A small group of volunteer choir members sang a beautiful rendition of I am Australian before the ceremony was concluded with a minute’s silence at 11:00am. Thanks to Mrs Heyn and Mr Bugeja for helping to organise this.

Tomorrow, Mia and Bella will represent the school at the community service in the park. Movember

As November rolls around so does Movember! Four brave staff members have volunteered to don the moustache to raise funds for men’s health. If you would like to support Angus, Matt, Sam and Paul please follow the following link, or donate at school . https://au.movember.com/team/2311301 To celebrate the last day of Movember, we will be having a ’show your mo’ day on November 30th. Students can wear / draw a moustache for a gold coin donation.

Staff Profile How well do you know… Name: Stacey Walters Role: Yr 2/3 Teacher Place of birth: Millicent Favourite food: homemade lasagne with freshly made lasagne sheets with a tomato sauce that has boiled for a few hours. What music are you into? I like a range – country, pop, rock. All depends on my mood. How would you describe yourself as a cook? I love to bake – cakes, biscuits and even a lemon meringue pie is occasionally made. Sometimes I just feel like baking and will give it away to friends and family. Cooking with my girls is lots of fun. We love to make pasta together and we usually have flour everywhere. Lots of mess but lots of fun. What is your specialty dish? Obviously lasagne is high up there, but I also do a pretty good lamb roast with golden syrup dumplings for sweets. It’s a favourite with my neighbours. What goes on a perfect pizza? Ham, mushrooms cheese and extra pineapple. Schools attended? Beachport Primary School and Kangaroo Inn Area School First ever job? Babysitting my neighbours’ children, then cooking fish and chips at the Green Room in Beachport (my specialty was battered flake which I cooked out the back). We love all subjects, but if you could choose one or two, what would be your favourite and why? I love teaching visual arts and crafts. I enjoy being creative and often sit down and do the art activities with the children. You are a bit of a seamstress, what are your favourite things to make? I enjoy time on my sewing machine to make quilts. Sometimes they are finished quickly, but Callie is still waiting for her baby quilt (lucky it will fit on her single bed). Haven’t made a nanna rug in Crows’ colours for Roger yet? Yes, I have. He got one this year as it was a special birthday. Tilly and Callie are now supporting the Crows and will probably use his quilt more than him. So you grew up in Beachport, what were the main benefits of living there? The smell of the sea air each morning, knowing most of the townspeople when I grew up, and being in walking distance to everywhere. If you weren’t teaching, what do you think you would

be doing? I really don’t know, I knew that I always wanted to work with children. I did think about becoming a chef or architect, but teaching was what I wanted to do. You also play a bit of golf. Any career highlights? – I was the Beachport B Grade Champion many years ago now, but the cherry on top was my Mum was the A Grade champion the same year. I have also never lost a pennant match as I have won the only game I played. Who, or what inspired you to become a teacher? Mr Shelton my physics teacher and Miss Jones my Home Economics teacher from high school. They were always approachable and wanted to see you do your best and help to celebrate your achievements. I still keep in touch with them today. What is the best thing about working at Penola Primary School? I remember my first day here at Penola. From the moment I walked in, I got a feeling that this would be an incredible school to work at. I have been blessed to have worked with many fantastic teachers and SSOs and have learnt much from them. It is so rewarding to see students come and go from my classrooms and each one has helped me become the teacher I am and helped me to become a better teacher for the future.

Sports Day 2017

On Friday, 3rd November Penola Primary School students enjoyed their annual

sports day, competing for the coveted Tanya Skeer Memorial Shield. There was a

terrific crowd in attendance to support the kids who looked splendid in their brightly

coloured sports tops.

A cool, but mostly fine and sunny morning provided ideal conditions for the 8oo metre and one-lap events. The tabloid events, team games, championship races and the ever-popular relays were all keenly contested throughout the day. From Foundation through to Year 7 the kids battled hard to earn every point that they could to help boost their team’s score. The Rymill team was absolutely thrilled to take out the shield, putting a halt to the run of victories that the Dickson team had chalked up over the previous 5 years. Rymill won the day with 220 points, well in front of the Gordon team which finished second for the third successive year. The Rymill house leaders, Georgia Winter, Anders McShane, Ava Copping, Seth Lear and Bryce Rowntree accepted the shield on their team’s behalf.

The Gordon Bannister Cup event (Tug-O-War) was won by a very determined Woods outfit, comprising Jake Klemm, Jess Gerritsen, Lochy Neale, Breanna Lythgo, Amelia Henry, Sam McDougall, Angus Bugeja, Amanda Gerritsen, Dominic Gerritsen and Dee O’Brien. In the preliminary bouts it was Rymill which defeated the pre-event favourites, Gordon, in what was a very even affair, and Woods which easily defeated a very underweight Dickson outfit. The final was a fantastic struggle, with Woods fighting back after Rymill had the upper hand early.

The Max Croser Team Spirit award went to the Rymill team for their outstanding organisation, initiative and attention to detail. Georgia Winter, Anders McShane, Ava Copping, Seth Lear and Bryce Rowntree provided wonderful leadership and are to be commended on their efforts. In fact all of the house leaders performed exceptionally well both in the lead-up to and on the day. The individual competitions were also keenly fought with great sportsmanship displayed on numerous occasions. Trophy winners on the day were:

At the end of proceedings, principal, Paul Harmer thanked several people including: the house leaders who had done a

terrific job both in the lead-up to and on the day; Matt Crewe

for again presenting the grounds in impeccable condition; Lou

Bailey and her hardworking Parent Club and volunteers for

providing lunch and refreshments throughout the day; the

Penola and Districts Little Athletics Club for the use of their

equipment; Kerry Dent, Dione McDonald and Peta Crewe for

volunteering to be chief scorers; and to the staff members

who put in a great deal of time and effort to help prepare the

kids for the day.

OUTDOOR LIBRARY OPENS!

Last Wednesday, our new Outdoor Library was officially opened. The Outdoor Library is an area outside the science room where students can read, draw and relax during lunchtimes. There are log seats, cushions and a cart to transport things to and from the library. At the nature themed opening, students gathered for the official ribbon cutting and then Mr Harmer read a funny book about a koala. We then held our regular Wednesday book club in the new space. Club organisers Louise Stanley and Macey O’Brien welcomed everyone and explained the nature themed drawing competition. Then there was lots of artistic talent on show as students drew imaginative nature inspired pictures. It was lovely to see the children choosing different outdoor areas to read and draw.
