Principal’s Report

Together We Learn

At Koo Wee Rup Primary School we value ongoing learning for all; students, teachers and Education Support Staff. On Monday and Tuesday, Simon Price, Geordie Disney, Sue Edwards and myself attended a 2 day workshop at Bastow Institute as an introduction to the Coaching for Leadership Teams project our school is involved in.

We had an opportunity to gain professional knowledge , learn about current research in school improvement, gather a toolbox of strategies and reflect and plan for the positive changes to come at our school. Our focus is to build on the way we work together and making this visible to our school community to show the levels of increasing collaboration amongst staff and students.

The research shows that there are four essential pillars required for a positive organisational culture including; empathy, engagement, learning and clarity. Working on these elements together will help us to build further quality outcomes for our school.

Geoff Barclay has been appointed as our professional coach and will be supporting the School Improvement Team (Simon Price, Geordie Disney, Sue Edwards and myself) as well as the Leadership Team( Michelle Mackenlay, Maree Azzam, Linda King and myself) to facilitate a process at the bigger picture level with staff, where we work through what is helping the school to be successful and identify what we need to do next.

Friday, 1st August- Curriculum Day- a student free day.

Teachers and Education Support staff across the Swamp schools will be participating in a combined professional learning day ‘ Collaboration for Success’. This is a great opportunity for teachers across many schools to share knowledge and teaching practice as well as ways of working together.

The teachers at Koo Wee Rup PS will be presenting 2 workshops. Geordie Disney, Simon Price and Linda King will be sharing the CAFÉ Reading and VOICES Writing programs and how the Senior team work together to plan and assess for personalised learning. Kelly Clark and Belinda McNaughton will be sharing the work we do in Big Ideas in Number and our Maths teaching and learning program across the school.

I would like to congratulate these teachers in advance for the outstanding work they have put into these workshops and their passion and commitment to share with colleagues.

Lions Club Public Speaking Competition

After a visit from Lions Club Public Speaking Competition organiser Mr. Ron Payne students in year levels 3-6 are busily preparing speeches. Students in year level 5 and 6 have been allocated the topic of preparing a “Toast” for someone they admire while students in year levels 3 and 4 are going to focus on topic “The Best Place in Australia”.

This public speaking competition will be conducted on three levels; at school level and at a district level and regional level. Two students will be selected to represent Koo Wee Rup Primary School in the district competition to be held at Degani’s in Koo Wee Rup on September 3rd, 2014. A school wide competition will be held at a special assembly on 14th of August, 2014 where two representatives from year levels 3-6 will speak on their allocated topic.

This public speaking program provides students with an excellent opportunity to showcase their public speaking skills.

Middle School Update

This week in the Middle School we focused on Maths investigations. Students used different materials

to represent 1000 in a variety of ways.

During Integrated Studies we investigated how

night and day occurs. Students researched the

topic of day and night using iPads and

computers. Our students did a great job

presenting their findings at assembly last week.

Magnificent Maths

We also investigated a variety of ways to represent multiplication problems. Students created arrays, used repeated addition and created groups. They also created empty number lines and used skip counting.

How big is 1000?

“If we break it into 100’s we can make 1000 with ten 100’s. “Wow, look how long 1000 is!”

“What if we put them in piles of ten?”

“I wonder how many piles we would need to make 1000?”

We have also been hard at work practicing our song for the upcoming production of ‘Jack and the Bean Stork’. The choreography is coming along nicely and students have been showcasing their fantastic voices. Costumes are coming along with some students already bringing their costumes to school to be stored ready for the dress rehearsal and concert. This will be an amazing and exciting event for everyone involved and students are really looking forward to showing off their amazing talent.

What’s Happening

Make sure to check out the copy of SuperPages

recently delivered to homes in Koo Wee Rup. It features great artwork

submitted by our students. A special

mention to Safa who was a major prize winner. Congratulations Safa!

A reminder that the staff car park is out of bounds before, after and

during school. Could vehicles also be mindful of

how close they park to the footpath as this is a thoroughfare for both

students and parents and should be kept clear where possible.

If you are able to help in our Canteen of a Friday, please leave

your details at the office.
