We aim to produce a wide variety of shows including comedy, drama, musical theatre and dance to provide students with experience of all types of performance and to enable you to try out different genres and explore your own individual talents. Previous shows include Rent, Les Miserablés, Grease, Twelfth Night, Witches of Eastwick, Fame, West Side Story and The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

TOURING COMPANIES

CHAMBER CHOIR The Chamber Choir was founded in 2005 and is made up of over 30 singers. The choir meets every week during term time to rehearse the very best music from the Renaissance to the present day - both a cappella and with an orchestra.

The choir has performed major choral concerts in Salford Cathedral, Manchester Cathedral, St Ann’s Church, St Augustine’s Church, St Philip’s with St Stephen’s Church and at Clare and Girton Colleges in Cambridge. The choir has also toured Romania and France. Students taking part have received master classes from Tim Brown (Head of Music at Clare College, Cambridge) and Mike Brewer OBE (Head of The National Youth Choirs of Great Britain and Laudibus).

CONTEMPORARY CHOIR The Contemporary Choir was founded in 2006 and is made up of over 30 singers. The choir performs pieces from the 20th and 21st century, specialising in gospel and pop music.

The choir has performed major choral concerts in Salford Cathedral, Manchester Cathedral, St Ann’s Church, St Augustine’s Church, St Philip with St Stephen’s Church, Clare College Cambridge, Girton College Cambridge, St Hild & St Bede’s College Durham and St Oswald’s Church Durham. Students taking part have received masterclasses from Tim Brown (Head of Music and Clare College, Cambridge), Mike Brewer OBE (Head of The National Youth Choirs of Great Britain and Laudibus) and James

Davey (Musical Director of Chantage, BBC Radio 3 Choir of the Year 2006).

The pieces are arranged specially for the choir and are tailored to suit specific singers. Most of the singers have a musical theatre background and can easily adapt to the many different vocal styles that the choir performs. They have performed many genres of music including jazz, gospel, pop, rock, metal and classical.

SHAKESPEARE COMPANYThe Shakespeare Company is an ensemble group committed to demystifying and performing Shakespeare (and other classical plays), and taking them to school and colleges around the region.

The Shakespeare Company established itself with a successful ‘Bits of the Bard’ fundraising event. Since that time the company has tackled several of the Bard’s popular plays including Much Ado About Nothing, The Merchant of Venice, Midsummer Night’s Dream, Twelfth Night, and Romeo and Juliet. In 2009 the company started touring local schools, which has grown year on year, giving students their first taste of the life of an actor. The tour is concluded each year with outdoor performances at Heaton Park.

THE CONSORT OF VOICESA choir of eight specialist sight-reading students who tour with classical, religious, musical theatre, jazz and pop music songs from Ars Nova period to the present day.

A-LEVEL COURSES

DANCE This course adopts a practical approach to dance technique, physiology, history, performance and choreography with the emphasis on applying choreographic principles to performance. Students have the opportunity to showcase both their choreographic and performance work in productions staged for the general public and can expect to attend a number of professional dance performances throughout the course.

As well as choreographic and performing your own solo work, you will perform in duos and trios. You will also study the history dance and different dance styles.

MUSICThis course is ideal for students who have an interest in classical music and musicals and who enjoy composing their own music in their own style. You will be keen to improve your own composing and instrumental playing (as a soloist and in groups). You will study other composers’ work and learn in detail how compositions are put together to help you write your own.

You will listen, perform, study and analyse three set works, and learn about the world of the musicals. You will compose your own music and perform it with other and on your own, as well as use Cubase SX3 to compose computer-generated music on the latest up-to-date systems.

DRAMA Drama is an exciting and challenging course, which is ideal for students with a keen enthusiasm for theatre - performing, analysing plays devising performances and studying theatre texts. In the first year of the course students will study two texts. Through practical sessions students will explore characterisation, and develop their own performance pieces based on the text. Alongside this there is also a written coursework component. In the second half of the year students work as actors on a group piece and monologue or duologue.

In the second year students are given the freedom to devise their own piece of theatre, and perform these in front of an audience. Alongside this students will study classical texts and research the original performance conditions.
