Brighton’s revolt turns to celebration

Major delay to bridge repair

BY GABRIELLE STUART

Last month they were ready to revolt – now people in New Brigh-ton are inviting the mayor to their celebrations.

There were cheers and tears on Thursday as the city council an-nounced $5 million in funding for the New Brighton Legacy Project heated saltwater pools.

It also announced almost $30 million towards the rebuild and

repairs of 31 community facilities across the city, including 10 facili-ties in the east.

Those include community centres, libraries, public toilets and pavilions in local parks.

Burwood-Pegasus Community Board chairwoman Andrea Cum-mings said Lianne Dalziel was invited to an “impromptu party” on Friday to celebrate.

“I’ve had so much feedback from the community already. They’re

absolutely stoked and they just want to celebrate.”

She said the funding would not pay for all the projects, but it showed the community the city council was committed.

“There has been a lot of frus-

tration around what people see as a lack of action. People have been saying it’s all talk, show us something solid. This is the firm commitment I think people have been asking for.”

New Brighton Business and Landowners Association manager Paul Zaanen spoke out about his frustrations with the city council last month, after it announced delays in funding for the heated pools project. • Turn to page 2

Lyttelton Tunnel 50th anniversary

Christchurch celebrated half a century of quick and effi cient travel to Lyttelton on August 31. The offi cial ceremony to open the new tunnel

control building included speeches by local dignataries and a ribbon cutting.

Following the opening, the tunnel was closed to traffi c, affording pedestrians and cyclists a rare opportunity to walk through it.

Former trust chairman Bill Martin, who died last year due to cancer, was remembered at the fundraiser.

Blooms of hope

• From page 1He founded the Peoples

Independent Republic of New Brighton group in protest, which now has more than 850 members. But last week he praised the decision of the city council.

“It is showing a commitment to Brighton, and that’s what

everyone’s been looking for. It’s just a start, but it’s a bloody good start.”

He believed the vocal re-sponse from the community could have been one of the reasons behind the city council announcement.

“It’s always very complicated to try to pin down all the fac-

tors that might have brought them to this point, but it is true that the more the community has a voice the more is done in the community.”

Both Burwood-Pegasus ward city councillors said they had been swamped with emails and messages since the decisions were announced.

Revolt turns to celebration

The city council has allo-cated $5 million towards New Brighton Legacy Project heated saltwater pools, and more is expected to come.

When making the announce-ment last week, Mayor Lianne Dalziel said the $5 million was not all that would be set aside for the project.

The Burwood-Pegasus Com-munity Board recommended in July that the city council set aside a minimum of $20,000 for the project.

That recommendation was turned down by the city coun-cil, because it wanted to seek expressions of interest from private investors before allocat-ing funding.

Community board chair-woman Andrea Cummings said the funds would not pay for the whole facility, but she believed they would make a difference.

“It’s a great start. It shows the council is committed to New Brighton, which will help bring in interest from philanthropists or investors. It’s just that com-mitment that is important, and I think it will pay dividends time and time again.”

Private investors are being sought this month, and the scope of the project has not yet been decided.

The city council has also pledged to contribute land to the project, which is likely to be the value of several million dollars.

Close to $30 million was allocated to the repair and rebuild of ‘prior-ity’ community projects.

Those include 10 projects in the east of the city.

The funding was borrowed from a new city council allowance, which will be repaid once insur-ance claims are finalised.

Mayor Lianne Dalziel said work would begin immediately on many of the facilities now that funding has been approved.

“This is a very real signal that we are committed to continuing to repair and rebuilding the facili-ties that matter the most to our residents.”

Timelines have not been set for the projects, but a lot of the repair work is expected to be completed within the next year.

It is likely to take up to two years for all of the new priority facilities to be repaired and rebuilt.

A total of $29,087,059 has been

set aside for the repair and rebuild of community facilities, with a further $11,703,596 for heritage facilities.

A full list of the priority community facilities is available at www.ccc.govt.nz/PriorityFacilities.

QE II Park was approved as the preferred site for a new Eastern Recreation and Sport Centre.

The decision was subject to a feasibility study on the site and a geotechnical investigation, which are expected to be made public in April next year.

Geotech Consulting engineer Ian McCahon said he believed the site would need significant work before building could go ahead.

But he said there would be similar problems on any site in the eastern part of the city, because of the nature of the land.

He expected the ground would need to be dug out about 8m to 10m below the facility.

“What you would gener-ally do is treat the ground itself to limit the liquefac-tion in the future. So es-sentially you’d be building a big block of unliquefiable area under the building.”

He said he could not esti-mate what that would cost

until plans were finalised.Plans for the facility have

not yet been announced, and the city council com-munity advisory group is still meeting to decide what features it would like to see included.

A budget of $30.5 million has been allocated to the project in the city council 2012-13 Annual Plan. The Christchurch Earthquake Appeal Trust has also given $6.5 million for water at-tractions at the facility.

Advisory group spokes-man Robert Jugovac said he was pleased the city council had adopted the recommendation.

“More work is needed until we are all benefiting from the new facility and many will be impatient for the real work on site to commence. But today’s decision is a significant step and the community advisory group is eager to continue its involvement for the benefit of the whole ward and wider Christ-church community.”

The New Brighton Project co-ordinators are enjoying the little things at their new office this week – like running water and toilets.

The community group has used a temporary container office in the New Brighton mall since Oc-tober last year, as its former office needed earthquake strengthen-ing.

There was no running water at the container office, and the staff had to cross the road to use toilets at the library.

Chairwoman Tracey Keen said the group was “stoked” with the

new offices, which are further down the mall.

“We feel like we’ve been in tran-sition for so long. Just the mere fact of running water and having a toilet is a huge bonus. No more quick trips to the library.”

Two weeks ago the group was worried that it would have to shut its doors.

Its power, which was supplied free of charge through the Pier-side Cafe and Bar, was due to be shut off as the business manage-ment was changing. Connecting to mains power was likely to cost around $1500.

The group contacted its landlord, Mark Munro, about the situation.

He offered the group the new office, which he also owned, at the same rental price it paid for the site.

Ms Keen said the deal was very generous.

“It is great for us. I don’t know what we would have done without it.”

She said that the group could look at expanding some of its programmes in the bigger space.

Mr Munro has also provided land to community group Renew Brighton, for their Gap Filler Cre-ative Quarter project.

Its former New Brighton Project site will remain a com-

munity picnic area, which the group will maintain.

Ms Keen said the only loss was power for some of the weekly mar-ket stallholders, some of whom would need to run generators to power their stalls.

“It will be tough for some of them, but there are plenty of mar-kets where there is no power, so a lot of them are already set up to supply their own power.”

Power for the weekly market bouncy castle will still be supplied by Pierside Cafe and Bar.

The new New Brighton Project office will open this week at 105 Brighton Mall.

Rawhiti Community Sport is now one step closer to a new $3.9 million sports facility in the east.

The Burwood-Pegasus Community Board decided at a meeting last week to support its application to allow the group to build a facility at Rawhiti Domain.

The building will be located adjacent to the Rawhiti Golf Club and car park area.

Community board deputy chairman Tim Baker said the facility had been a long time coming and was an excellent plan.

But how soon the facil-ity will actually be built is unknown.

The Pegasus Post asked Rawhiti Community Sport members Alan Direen and Thea Mickell how much money had so far been raised, but neither would disclose the amount.

The facility was mooted several years ago but prog-ress has been slow. Key to its success had been sports clubs in the New Brighton area selling up their existing facilities and moving to a new base.

The earthquakes have also impeded progress.

Mr Direen refused to

answer questions about how the $3.9 million project would be funded.

“Don’t go there. We’re not ready to talk to you about that. We are still working through things with clubs,” he said.

Rawhiti Community Sport includes representa-tives from New Brighton Cricket, New Brighton Net-ball, New Brighton Bowls Club, New Brighton Rugby Club, Rawhiti Golf Club and Parklands Christchurch United Softball Club.

However, Mr Direen said plans to redesign the facility were “going well” and the group was working through some “fine-tuning” with member clubs.

Initially the plan was to build a $5 million complex. But ballooning construction costs have meant that plans have been pruned back.

Ms Mickell said the support of the community board was “wonderful.”

But the group still had a long way to go.

“We’re not there yet,” said Ms Mickell.

The new facility has also attracted sports clubs from outside of the New Brighton area.

BY GABRIELLE STUART

At just 12-years-old, budding rock star Max Aldridge is al-ready being asked for his auto-graph.

He is lead singer for the band Unidentified, which beat more than 30 other bands to win the Rockshop Bandquest regional finals last week.

The band is made up of six year 7 and 8 Chisnallwood In-termediate School pupils: Max on vocals; Kayne Child, the lead guitarist; Travis Griffin on gui-tar; Josh McCaffery, bass guitar; Joel Coleman on drums and Nic Ryan on keyboard.

The band has been playing to-gether for less than six months, forming after they heard each other perform at Smokefree RockQuest in May.

Max said the secret of the band’s success was enjoying each other’s company.

“We’re all boys, so we all joke around a bit and have fun while we’re doing it. We’re just there to have fun and perform ‘cause that’s what we love doing.”

He said this was the first year he had performed in front of such large audiences.

“It’s really fun, but it’s quite nerve-wracking, just before you go on stage and in the first verse. But then you get used to it and it’s really cool.”

Band member Joel won the

rocking drummer award at the competition for his playing.

He said he had loved playing drums since he was about four-years-old, and played on “pots and pans and stuff”.

“It’s fun and loud and it’s got a lot of energy to it.”

He said he enjoyed being part of the band.

“It’s fun to just have a jam with other people who love music.”

But although the band is

enjoying its success, its days could be numbered.

Max said that several of the band members would leave for high school next year, which was likely to split the band.

Fellow Chisnallwood pupil Keira Jonkers also did well at the competition, winning a mu-sicianship award and a prize for lyrics of an original song she wrote for her band, Multi Ring-tone Phone.

She plays drums and piano, as

well as singing for the band, but said she started writing music last year.

“I started writing songs be-cause I felt it was a good way to put emotions out in songs, and music makes me happy – but my songs are mostly sad and de-pressing songs. I don’t know why I write about those things, but it just comes out.”

Chisnallwood have won top awards in several music com-petitions this year, including the CPIT JazzQuest, Smokefree RockQuest and New Zealand School of Music Jazz Festival.

So what are your thoughts on being named a finalist for the award?

It hasn’t quite sunk in yet. Real-ly, I see it as an acknowledgement of the amazing work of women in Canterbury, rather than of me as an individual.

So do you know any of the other finalists?

Not personally, but I think we’ve all heard of people like  Beatrice Faumina and Kerry Prendergast – they’re stellar names.

How does it feel to have your name up beside theirs?

It’s pretty overwhelming. Obvi-ously the people who nominated me believe I’m doing something good for the community, so it’s definitely an honour for many reasons.

So tell me about Women in the Rebuild, where did it start?

Basically I’m a business strate-gist, and as a mentor I saw women weren’t getting a fair shake. Post-earthquake Christchurch had become a very masculine econo-my, and I saw the frustration for women. It was a way to get women together, to show them that they’re not alone in business. And also to acknowledge that the things that

are happening in the city are dif-ferent to what people are dealing with anywhere else, because we are dealing with a post-disaster environment and it’s a changed economy.

Why do you think it has been so successful?

Because it meets their needs. We understand that the pressure is on for women because we – Rae, my fellow director, and myself – feel it ourselves. As often happens in a post-disaster environment, a lot of women went home to take care of their children and their families, so they had to deal with the pressures of living on a single income on top of everything else. And if you’re running a business, you have a responsibility to staff members, so I know a lot of busi-nesses have kept their doors open just because of the staff. It’s been a tough time for a lot of women.

That’s something I’ve also seen through my work with the West Christchurch Women’s Refuge.

I’ve heard you also do a lot of work with the Chinese commu-nity in Christchurch.

Yes, I sit on executive committee of the New Zealand China Trade Association. I have a strong rela-

tionship with several groups work-ing between the countries, and I’m involved in running functions for the advancement of trade. I have a lot of Chinese contacts that I work with, here. There are some huge issues, when you consider that there are over 20,000 Chinese in Christchurch alone.

So how did you get involved with the community?

I first got involved about five years ago, when I attended a func-tion run by ANZ. There was a gen-tleman there running Mandarin classes, and he wanted me to men-tor him, so I did that. Eventually he asked me to become a business partner. In 2011, after the earth-quake struck, he was summoned back to China, so I brought out his part of the business, and I’ve been running it since.

So have you been to China? No, I haven’t.Is it on the bucket list?Of course. It’s actually the

biggest joke among the Chinese community, that I do so much for them yet I have never actually been there. But I have an under-standing of the culture from work-ing closely with the community.

Working with such a variety of different groups must be a chal-lenge.

It is, but I think it gives me quite a full awareness of what is going on in the community. With Wom-en in the Rebuild I know the is-

sues that women are facing in the rebuild of their lives and of their businesses, which are two quite different issues. On the Chinese side it’s about understanding and building relationships, and with Michelle Mac it’s about managing work-life balance and dealing with those issues.

So they’re all quite different, but the common theme is building better business through relation-ships.

Work done for women earnsBusinesswoman Michelle MacWilliam has been named a finalist in the Women of Influence awards, for her work as founder of Women in the Rebuild and in the Chinese community in the city. She spoke to Gabrielle Stuart about being caught in tsunami evacuations, the rebuild of Christchurch and what kept her inspired.

How do you juggle it all?I am a very focused person, and

I am a very structured person. As a business strategist I work with busi-nesses on building systems to help them be efficient, so really I have to practice what I preach! That’s really how I do it – just walk the talk.

So do you have free time, and if so, what do you do with it?

In my free time – I do have free time – I love gardening and good British drama. I love mountain bik-ing, too.

Which part of the city are you living in?

At the moment I’m living two steps away from the red zone in Kaiapoi.

Were you living there before the earthquakes?

No, I was living in Mt Pleasant at time of the quakes, so my house was one of those ones that slid down the hill. I became a refugee after that, out in Rangiora.

I actually went on a flight, a week after the earthquake, to Hawaii. I thought I was escaping the disas-ter, but then I was caught up in the tsunami warnings there. We had a level eight vertical evacuation, so we spent a night up on a mountainside and it was far from relaxing. My friends refuse to travel with me now.

Because you bring bad luck?Well, I hope I’m past that now,

touch wood.So have you done a lot of travel-

ling?Well, I’ve been to Hawaii. The

best thing to do when you’re feeling

really down is go to Hawaii and go surfing with firemen. But I haven’t travelled much. I’m too busy for that now.

Do you have a partner or family?I have a partner. He’s also involved

in international trade with China.Have you always lived in Christ-

church?Yes, I was born and bred here.Do you have a favourite place in

the city at the moment? At the moment I don’t have a

favourite part, because I don’t like the look of a lot of the new develop-ment and the architecture coming into the city.

I actually think, and I’ve told Roger Sutton this, that families need places to go that aren’t in the city. To go somewhere like the Botanic Gar-dens they have to go into the city, and the city is not a happy place at the moment, and it holds a lot of dif-ficult memories for a lot of people.

If there was somewhere safe and beautiful outside the city set apart as a place where families could go, I think that could really encourage them.

So did you have a favourite spot or memory of the city before the earthquakes?

That’s a difficult one. Sitting at the top of Rapaki Track and looking down at the city would probably be my favourite memory. Just sitting up there looking down at that pan-oramic view.

Obviously you’ve done a huge amount of work with women. What do you think the value is of

awards like Women of Influence?I think it shows that women have

a voice and a role to play in our society. It acknowledges that there are opportunities for women, and it proves that absolutely anybody can step up in these awards and become a finalist.

Obviously at this stage you’re just a finalist in the competition. Have you thought about what it would mean if you won?

Of course you do, but this is tall poppy country so you don’t voice it. If I won it would be an acknowl-edgement of the achievement of all women in Canterbury, because I’m not just one person doing this. When you see what I’m involved in, this is for all women in all walks of life and all stages of life. I’m repre-senting a community that has been hammered hard. If I did get that far it would be because the judges recognised the whole community behind me.

You must have worked with some pretty inspiring people over the years.

I’ve worked with some amazing people, and I’ve learnt that everyone brings greatness to the table. As a collective everyone helps each other, and that’s what makes Women in the Rebuild so strong.

Of all the initiatives you’ve been involved in, which are you most proud of?

I’m actually proud of them all, because they’ve all been positive for people somehow or somewhere along the way.

BY MARK THOMAS – FIRE RISK MANAGEMENT OFFICER

Starting on a sad note this week we lost one of our own, Brad Fletcher, from the Lyttelton Volunteer Fire Brigade who was tragically killed in an industrial accident at the port.

Every member of the incred-ible family in blue we all belong to feels and grieves for Brad’s loved ones and the Lyttelton brigade.

Spring is officially with us so the actions of the sick individ-ual who keeps lighting fires in the undergrowth at Southshore Spit now ramps up the danger to people and firefighters alike as drier conditions and higher winds make his arson fires more dangerous.

The latest was on Wednes-day afternoon and took pumps and firefighters away from the

city while they dealt with it. We need some help from the public in that area to identify what has become a serial and dangerous fire lighter.

Three kitchen fires this week in Martindales Rd, Heathcote, in Warblington St, Aranui, and in Ilam Rd, Bryndwr.

Two of them involved occu-pants being treated for smoke inhalation.

For the thousandth time our plea is for people cooking to stay in the kitchen but if even that does not allow you to deal with a fire successfully and im-mediately, to get out, closing the door behind you.

I’ve seen too many times the results of people staying in a burning house in a futile effort to stop a fire that has got be-yond them.

Sadly, I’ve seen the body bags. Get out, stay out.

Mojo Mathers, Green candidate for Christchurch East – Like you, I love Christchurch. The Green Party has a plan for a cleaner, fairer, smarter economy that will benefit everyone.

We will make all our rivers clean enough to swim in and keep our beaches free from oil spills.

We will ensure every child is better off by tackling poverty and extending free doctors’ visits to teenagers under 18.

We will invest $462 million over five years to get Christchurch moving again and $62 million to make Christchurch homes warm and dry.

If you love Christchurch too, make sure you Party Vote Green for a city we can all be proud of.

Dora Roimata Langsbury, Green can-didate for Te Tai Tonga – Dora is Ngai Tahu and lives in Christchurch.

She brings valuable experience from nine years of being a Greens candidate and from playing a key role in col-laborative earthquake recovery organisations which have community and sustainability at their heart.

Dora’s campaign focuses on her strong commitment to: afford-able, quality education; resourcing schools to become hubs for com-munity services; jobs that sustain our whanau into the future.

Go and meet Dora and take your ques-tions, on Saturday, September 13, between 2pm and 4pm at Café 53, 53 Hampshire St.

Poto Williams, Labour candidate for Christchurch East – I’m keen to be re-elected. Here’s why.

I want to help change New Zealand. It’s become a place of haves and have-nots. Even middle-income families struggle to get a home of their own. It’s sad we have to give children breakfast at school.

We can turn things round. We can man-age the economy to provide jobs. We can improve family incomes by increasing the minimum wage, and implementing the “liv-ing wage”. We can give every child a good start. We can reduce housing costs, both for renters and buyers, through Labour’s plan to build 100,000 affordable homes over 10 years.

Jo Hayes, National can-didate for Christchurch East – Joanne was born and raised in the farming sector and is of Maori and Scots descent.

Married to Pat a farmer, they have raised two sons who have now left home.

Graduating from Massey University in 1996 with a Bachelor of Science degree, Joanne returned to extramural studies in 2007 studying towards a Master’s in Business Administration.

Joanne has worked in a number of industries that include educa-tion, local government, health and social ser-vices yet it is her 11-year tenure in the health sector at both NGO and DHB levels that she is most proud of while adding social services and health auditing to her set of executive management expertise.

•Authorized by Jo Hayes, 1/8 Bealey Ave, Christchurch

Leighton Baker, Conservative candidate for Christchurch East – Leighton is a husband, father, grandfather, busi-ness owner, employer and builder.

After 28 years in the building industry, Leighton’s skills and knowledge have been, and will be, extremely valuable for the east, as it looks to rebuild hous-es and families, encour-age businesses, develop lifestyle and regain its role as Christchurch’s most liveable area.

His approach, of empowering passion-ate locals and advocat-ing on behalf of those struggling, with practi-cal solutions is what is needed. NOW!!

The Conservative Party is a collection of average Kiwis who believe in smaller, more accountable govern-ment, lower taxes, and a more just society.

If that’s you, vote Leighton Baker, Conservative Party.

Nicky Wagner, National candidate for Christchurch Central – As MP for Christchurch Central I am dedicated to the successful rebuild of Christchurch and cre-ating a stronger, safer, more sustainable and people friendly city.

As we rebuild our homes, our communi-ties and the city cen-tre we need to work together to seize every opportunity to build a strong foundation for future generations.

Our population and our city are grow-ing. Young people are returning and we have new jobs, train-ing opportunities and higher wages. We are building new schools and hospitals.

I commit all my energy, experience and expertise to a flourishing future for Christchurch.

Volunteers make a difference every day – from driving a van to simply knocking on doors to see how people are doing.

Volunteering is a great way to boost your own wellbeing at the same time as helping your community. Volunteering includes all of the ‘Five Ways to Wellbeing’: it helps us to connect, be active, take notice, give and keep learning.

Red Cross’ Cross Town Shuttle is a volunteer-run service providing transport for people in Christchurch without transport of their own and unable to use public transport. Volunteer drivers and assistants take people to medical appointments and leisure activities, helping to combat social isolation and allow people to continue to lead full lives, regardless of the impact imposed by road works and post-earthquake infrastructure repairs.

With plans to expand the service, Red

Cross needs more volunteer drivers and more volunteers to help with community outreach and door-knocking. Red Cross volunteers are a diverse bunch of people who come from a wide range of backgrounds.

Before Anthony Seumanutafa was a volunteer on the Cross Town Shuttle, he used the service to help him get across the city. “I find it to be a good way to help and socialise with people, and a way to say thank you to all those for their help – three for the price of one.”

This desire to help is what unites volunteers, says Christine Williams, outreach volunteer.

“We are able to give time, empathy, a listening ear and often some contact numbers for further assistance to enable the person we visit to continue to move forward.”

If you have a little spare time you could give, why not get in touch with New Zealand Red Cross now to find out how you could help make a difference too?

The Red Cross recovery team couldn’t function without wonderful volunteers who give their time to help people in Christchurch.

Performance, luxury and style are major reasons why buyers choose BMW.

And as time has served to prove, more and more BMW models are incorporating those ingredients.

Take the latest to come my way, the 220i Coupe. It oozes style with its low, sleek shape, it has perfor-mance to envy with its 135kW engine and has a high level of specification worthy of a luxury tag.

The 220i Coupe is essentially based on the 1-Series platform, the nomenclature distancing itself a little from the hatch and sedan shapes of its stablemate.

The 220i’s design is curvy yet aggressive, it has a shape which prompts comment and desire, yet it also has practicality which doesn’t always present itself with coupe designs. The latter is par-ticularly noticeable, the 220i offers easy entry and egress up front, the doors aren’t overly wide so they aren’t a nuisance in close confines, while there’s also the benefit of reasonable leg room for those who are confined to the two rear seats.

The 220i is only available here

in two variants at present. The test car was listing at $71,700 in base form, there is a six-cylinder M235i model at $104,800, but for my money the entry-level four-cylinder is the pick, it is dynamic, comfortable and a heck of a lot of fun. It is also loaded with the packages that BMW has devel-oped so that safety and fuel effi-ciency isn’t compromised.

One is labelled EfficientDynamics and it is simply an energy regeneration system under deceleration, and along with an economy driving mode prompts are made so that the driver is aware that fuel usage sav-ing targets can be easily met.

According to BMW the 220i can achieve a combined cycle rating of

seven-litres per 100km (40mpg). My time with the test car resulted in a 9l/100km (31mpg) average which wasn’t that far distant along with a 5.2l/100km (51mpg) high-way cruise figure with the engine turning over very relaxed at just 1750rpm at 100km/h.

While fuel economy is one thing, BMW engines are gener-ally built with performance as the main manufacturing ingredient. Under the bonnet sits a longi-tudinally-mounted, four-potter which is also rated with 270Nm of torque. The turbocharged, double camshaft engine is coupled to a fabulous eight-speed automatic gearbox. The combination of both is alluring with strong engine per-formance and shift quality which

make ratios changes almost unde-tectable.

The 220i is fast for a 2-litre car. It will scorch to 100km/h from a standstill in 7sec and will lunge through an 80km/h to 120km/h overtaking manoeuvre in 4sec thanks to a strong turbo surge and high mid-range torque output. I’m no stranger to this engine/gear-box combination, it is available in the 1-Series and stands out for its revvy nature and solid perfor-mance through the rev band and, of course, there’s always a gear on hand, there’s never a feeling that the transmission is not in a suit-able ratio.

Of course, the 220i doesn’t need to be driven aggressively but when it is it feels strong, akin to the per-formance aspect of BMW. At city speeds it is docile and feeds power gently so that stop-start traffic is relaxing.

The 220i characteristically drives through the rear axles and, in the first instance, that provides a natural handling feel along with the steering that is weighted for perfect feel in regards to what the tyres are doing in relation to the road surface. The 220i has steer-ing which makes the car feel like it is riding on velvet, every nuance of the road surface is cushioned but delivered back to the driver so that he or she understands the handling characteristics.

BMW is strong on safety and

the electronic devices which con-trol traction are there so that the rear end stays stable under power.

On my inland test the 220i provided one of the great drives of 2014. It is balanced, sharp in the steering and has power which enables it to accelerate quickly between corners, yet will brake and turn with uncanny ability.

The 220i is a true driver’s car and rewards with its lithe and nimble nature. I can’t wait until other engine combinations arrive down under, diesel power is a certainty, while the 240kW engine of the M-Sport model would be a powerhouse of true proportions.

And not forgetting the 220i has the glitz to go with the glamour, it has all the major specification ingredients such as satellite navi-gation and stop-start fuel saving technology included in the price, along with an extensive option list.

The test car was fitted with a $4000 M-Sport option which adds gloss to an already well polished car.

BMW 2-Series highly desirablePrice: BMW 220i Coupe, $71,700.Dimensions: Length, 4432mm; width, 1774mm; height, 1418mm.Configuration: Four-cylinder longitudinal, rear-wheel-drive, 1997cc, 138kW, 270Nm, eight-speed automatic.Performance: 0-100km/h, 7sec.

Lilly MaetzigTatyanna Meharry Veronika Maser

A trio of women with powerful subjects create structures of fragile beauty.

Lilly Maetzig is an emerging artist based in Christchurch. She graduated from CPIT in 2013 with a Bachelor of Design with a major in Visual Arts. Lilly draws with a sewing machine onto water soluble fabric. She makes a base of thread, which allows her to apply layers of cotton to make up an image. The subject of Lilly’s work is always drawn from nature, where she investigates what a plant might mean, or will playfully reflect nature’s own work.

Veronika Maser was born in Switzerland and is currently living on the West Coast of the South Island. She has worked as a full time artist since 1999, exhibiting widely nationally and internationally. “My woven,

twisted and formed wire works show influences of patterns and layers emerging in the microbial world. In my artwork I am drawn to the stillness and introspective side of oval shapes, it is a favourable choice that evokes comfort in me. Layers of patterns in my work create a moving landscape that takes place on a microcosmic level.”

Tatyanna Meharry was born in Christchurch. She has her Masters of Fine Arts and currently teaches Ceramics at Risingholme. Tatyanna has exhibited in numerous national shows and explores ideas of history through the re interpretation of Colonial and Victorian motifs and icons. These ceramic nests, eggs and family portraits of lost Huia represent the precious fragility of the ecology that we live in.

“This time we are supporting the Look Good, Feel Better cancer foundation that assists women to look and feel good about themselves as they go through their cancer treatment. “Twenty of these ladies will be modelling in the show – a first ever in New Zealand,” says event organiser Denyse Saunders, “along with supporting the Christchurch North Zonta group that also supports women in need.”

CANTERBURY COLLECTIONS & AWARDS

Do you have an open mind? Are you looking for some answers? Would you like a fun night out? If you answered yes

to these questions, then make sure you get your tickets to see Judie Roberts, a renowned clairvoyant, medium, Reiki and Seichem master, holistic healer, crystal consultant, tarot and past life therapist.

In town for one show only, on Friday, September 12 at the Garden Bar, Cashmere Club.

Judie has one of those accents that keep you wondering exactly where she’s from, and this is probably because she has spread her wings far and wide. When she was 20 years old, she went to live in Canada and the United States for a while, developing her spirituality. While living in Australia, Judie’s clairvoyant agency was employed by some top resorts and financial institutions for promotional work.

She was also a columnist for eight years for a local newspaper in Brisbane and was a regular on Australian radio with guest spots on television.

Once Judie moved back to New Zealand, she spent several years living in Taupo where she owned the Crystal Dreams shop before moving to Tauranga to open another shop. Judie and her family now live in the far north.

Door sales for the show cost $35.Book a private reading with Judie on

Some people think an oil and filter change is servicing their car. We see a number of customers who are getting 12 minute oil and filter changes done and think their car has been serviced. Certainly this part of the service is better than nothing.

I recommend that our fully trained mechanics service your vehicle. If you really want the quick alternative, we will match the price using cheaper oil and filters.

Give me a call and I will be happy to discuss the alternative.

Remember we service air conditioners, do wheel alignments and use the latest diagnostic equipment.

FOOD

Party time

Apple ToffeesServes 12 Apples and toffee are an age-old combina-tion, and these toffees are a new twist on the old party favourite.

Ingredients150g Dried sliced apples2 cups Sugar¾ cup Water25g Butter2 tsp Lemon juice2 drops Red food colouring½ tsp Cream of tartar

DirectionsGrease 16 patty pan tins well with butter, then distribute apple slices into tins.

Place sugar and water in a large saucepan and stir over a gentle heat until sugar is dissolved. Bring to the boil and add butter, lemon juice, food colouring and cream of tartar.

Boil vigorously until mixture reaches a temperature of 150 deg C. This should take about 8 minutes. At this stage the toffee will change colour to a shade of amber. You can test a little toffee in a saucer of cold water - the threads should immediately go hard and brittle.

Quickly pour the toffee into the patty pans and allow to cool. Once toffee thick-ens, insert ice-block sticks.NOTES: If you have the option of apple variety, then I would choose something tart like Granny Smith.

Star biscuitsIngredients225g Butter¾ cup Icing sugar2¼ cups Flour½ cup Raspberry jam

DirectionsPreheat oven to 160 deg C. Beat butter, icing sugar and vanilla until pale and creamy. Add flour and mix well.

Tip dough onto the bench and knead thoroughly. Roll dough out into a 1cm-thick rectangle.

Cut out 30 stars with a cookie cutter ap-proximately 6cm in diameter. Using a 3cm star cutter, cut a star shape out of the centre of 15 of the biscuits.

Place biscuits on a baking tray and cook for 10 to 12 minutes until firm. Cool on a wire rack, then spread the 15 full biscuits with raspberry jam and top with a cutout biscuit. Dust with icing sugar.

Icey-slicey with brown sugar wafersServes 6 This is a regulated treat. It’s messy, best served at lunch, not dinner and great when the kids have friends over. Leftover cut out ice cream can be enjoyed with warmed chocolate sauce or fresh fruits when the kids are fast asleep.

Ingredients1 kg Vanilla ice cream, rectangular block1 packet Hundreds and Thousands, and other assorted sugared confections such as chocolate hailBrown sugar wafers85g Butter3 Tbsp Golden syrup⅓ cup Brown sugar½ cup Flour

DirectionsUnwrap the ice cream, cut in half length-wise and use a cookie cutter to cut out discs, then place them straight back in the freezer. I like to get this done and out of the way a few hours before serving. It ensures the ice cream discs are nice and hard so they hold their shape.

When ready, lay out the various sug-ared confections in bowls, sandwich the ice creams between brown sugar wafers (see below) and hand over to the kids to roll in the confections. Let the fun begin!Brown sugar wafersMelt sugar, butter and syrup in a sauce-pan over a low heat, take off the stove and stir in the flour.

Put small spoonfuls on baking paper and flatten them out using the back of a wet teaspoon.

Bake at 180 deg C for 5 minutes or until golden.

When cool store in an airtight con-tainer; these wafers do not like humidity so I keep mine in the freezer.

Homemade lemonadeKids will love quenching their thirst with a homemade lemonade treat. They could even give mum a hand in the kitchen to make it.

Ingredients1 cup Sugar1 cup Water2 Lemons1 cup Lemon juice1 Ltr Soda water

DirectionsPlace the sugar, water and finely grated rind of 1 lemon in a small saucepan and stir over a gentle heat until sugar is completely dis-solved.

Add the lemon juice to the sugar syrup and refrigerate for 30 minutes.

Pour the syrup into glasses until two-thirds full, add ice, top with soda and serve gar-nished with a slice of lemon.

What will you cook for dinner?35 Glenmore Avenue, CasebrookAuction: September 25, 20143 bedrooms |2 bathrooms | 2 toilets | 2-car garage | 1 carport | Listing number: BE192102

Because you will never want to leave this home, there’s ample room to host gatherings and

parties in the large open plan living area and a beautiful garden and deck to have barbeques on.

Watching the young ones run around on the lawn while drinking your wine or beer with your friends is going to be the hardest chore you will have these coming summer evenings.

Wonderfully presented inside with three bedrooms and two bathrooms, there is room to spread for family or friends. Plenty of off-street parking, a proper double garage and a carport means there’s always room for that extra car or boat. The EQC work has been completed for you, just move in and enjoy.

Our sellers have bought at auction and need to be sold. Now it’s your turn to win at auction too.

Open Homes until auction day, Thursday, September 25, 3pm are: Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays, 2pm to 2.30pm, or to arrange a private viewing, call Debbie Pettigrew from Harcourts Grenadier Beckenham (Licensed Agent REAA 2008) on 337 1316 or 027 777 0411.

Account ExecutiveWe are seeking an Account Executive to join our sales team.

With the Christchurch market very strong in the building and home market, the opportunities for advertising sales are very exciting.

Ideally applicants will have previous experience in media sales (but this is not essential), and we encourage anyone who believes they have the ability and passion to build advertising relationships and build on the success of these brands to apply. We are seeking a dedicated organized person with a determination to succeed.

Applicants should be able to work to targets and budgets, be able to build long-term sustainable relationships with our customers, build new business, and be an “ideas’’ person working in a team environment.

Remuneration and employment conditions are excellent.

The successful applicant will be based at The Christchurch Star Company located in central Christchurch.

The Christchurch Star Company is a diversified media business. Our flagship The Star is one of the country’s largest newspapers by circulation and the country’s only free metropolitan newspaper. The company also publishes six community newspapers, several lifestyle and trading magazines and award winning feature publications. Our growing online presence includes digital editions of all our newspapers, websites and New Zealand’s largest media facebook community. The company also organises two of the city’s most iconic annual events, The Star City 2 Surf and The Star Home and Leisure Show.

If you are a confident person seeking a challenge and are prepared to work under pressure but enjoy the rewards, you will love this opportunity.

Applications will be processed on a rolling basis until filled, so if this is of interest please send in your CV promptly.

I started lIfe In the small rural town of eketahuna the second chIld of Pk and kate aPanuI. Both my Parents dedIcated theIr lIves to ensurIng we had kaI on our taBle, clothes on our Backs, and a roof over our heads. we were Poor In money, yet rIch In love and suPPort for each other.

I come from a tight knit whanau with a background of hard work and an attitude that nothing is insurmountable. It wasn’t until I left home that my life changed dramatically. At age 22 I became an unmarried mother, on the domestic purposes benefit with little to no education qualifications. It was this fright that changed me forever and I adopted the saying “if it has to be, then it’s up to me”. So I started a successful re-education programme which persists.

Along the way I met my soul mate Pat, a man who took me and my son into his life and has believed in us, a man who at times says little but does a lot, a man who I am proud to have by my side, and one whom I am proud to stand by his side. We are equal partners in everything we do and I love him to bits.

Our sons Mat and Ben have bought immense pleasure and pride to our lives as we have watched them and guided them towards adulthood. They are now men of the world with all the lessons that that brings. Thanks to my daughter-in-law Shan for producing two beautiful mokopuna, Carter and Eli, for it is them who carry the future of all our tomorrows.

As I turn to the electorate of Christchurch East, the electorate that I bring my skills, my experience and my determination; I can only but stand in awe of the resilience and strength of a community that continues to be steadfast in their determination to see the East thrive once more.

I want to contribute to those efforts too.• I bring a strong voice for Christchurch East• I bring a determined, can-do attitude• And I bring a loyalty that knows no bounds.

My track record working for communities is well known from the deep south to the far north, east to west, I have worked in Christchurch and I can do it again; but this time for Christchurch East.
