FRASER WALKER-PEARCE
Users of a popular South Brighton walkway are at risk if the speed limit is not lowered by the Bridge St bridge.
Southshore and South New Brighton residents’ associations have lobbied the city council to reduce the speed limit from 70km/h to 50km/h.
They say because the South Brigh-ton Domain walking and cycling track leads across Bridge St, 70km/h is too fast.
They want it back to 50km/h, as it was when the Bridge St bridge was repaired.
Southshore Residents Association chairman Bill Simpson said although he
wasn’t aware of any collisions or near misses, it was very possible.
“Most people are reasonably care-ful but even so it’s a vulnerable area. If they’re going from one side of South Brighton Domain to the other they have to cross across a road that’s 70km/h,” he said.
A Stronger Christchurch Infrastruc-ture Rebuild Team spokeswoman said after the official reopening of the bridge in March, the speed limit was returned to 70km/h, as it was before the earth-quakes, and not left on a lower limit.
Southshore Residents Association vice chairwoman Lynda Burdekin said it was pointless having a 70km/h speed zone leading up to a roundabout.
“It’s only a short space to the bridge and then you have to slow down for the roundabout. We have strong concerns for safety,” she said.
Meanwhile, the city council is under-taking a citywide fact-finding mission on what streets need lower speed limits.
It has asked community boards to make recommendations for further in-vestigation.

FRASER WALKER-PEARCE
Fixing earthquake-damaged roads and getting better public transports should be the focus of city council – not transitional projects.
That is the message from New Brighton residents who have told the city council the “nice-to-haves” should not be put before fixing up the suburb.
About 20 people went to a meeting in New Brighton on Thursday night to tell the city council how $25,000 earmarked for transitional projects should be spent.
But instead of approving city council ideas of deck chairs, hammocks, urban gardens and recreational spaces, they said it
was time for money to be spent on the “basics”.
Last week the Pegasus Post reported that the city council idea was to use the money on for deck chairs and hammocks. But readers have been outspoken against the idea.
Southshore resident Denise Brown said at the meeting she felt the money would be
better spent on health care and the roads.
“Get the simple things right, then they can worry about all the rest of these things,” she said.
But the city council says it has to spend the $25,000 on transi-tional projects.
New Brighton Business and Landowners Association Paul Zaanen said he welcomed the
funding and his idea was for a volleyball court on the beach.
Other ideas put forth included salt water pools, fixing roads, walking and cycling tracks, bar-becue areas and shade sails.
Community board member Tim Baker said he liked some of the proposed ideas, but not all.
“I really like the sun loungers and the hole in the wall ideas. I could knock a few (hole in the wall photos) up by the whale pool for about $1000, so that would cut the costs for some-thing else,” he said.
A design competition for smaller temporary structures is also under way, and a follow-up meeting will be held on Wednesday night at the same location from 4.30-6.30pm.

CYCLIST INJUREDA injured cyclist was taken to hospital after he was knocked off his bicycle last week. St John was alerted to the incident, on Hills Rd, Mairehau, at about 4am on Monday morning. They arrived to find the cyclist, in his 40s, had sustained moderate injuries and transported him to Christchurch Hospital.
ALLEGED ASSAULT ON WOMANAfter an alleged assault on Tuesday afternoon, a woman was taken to hospital with minor injuries. The incident took place on Hills Rd, Mairehau just past 2pm.
GRANT FOR GARDEN TRUSTThe New Brighton Community Garden Trust has been granted $1225 from the Burwood-Pegasus Community Board’s discretionary response fund. It asked for the money so it could invest in a cooker for the food that is produced from the garden, a camera to take photos of the end product and post it on its website, and the rest for staff training. City councillor Glenn Livingstone asked if $380 for a camera was too much, considering it would only be used a few times a week. After consideration the board granted the full amount to the community garden trust.
CONSULTATION: About 20 people went to a public consultation meeting on Thursday night to discuss the transitional projects budget.

New Brighton is rolling out the welcome mat with an expected 10,000 people heading to the suburb due to the Coast to Coast Multisport Race.
For the second time, the finish line for the popular event will be New Brighton Pier.
New Brighton Business and Land Owners Association man-ager Paul Zaanen said to keep the suburb buzzing, markets would be open late with a fireworks display on at 10pm.
For years the finish line has been in Sumner and was contro-versially changed last year.
But race director Richard Ussh-er said the finish line will stay in New Brighton.
“We’ve had some really posi-tive feedback about the finish at New Brighton last time, and we’re looking forward to finish-ing there again this year. It’s certainly an intention to have the finish there long term,” said Mr Ussher.
The race kicks off on Friday at 7am at Kumara Beach.
Competitors will traverse 243km to New Brighton, which includes about 140km of cycling, a 70km kayak, and the rest on foot.

A fire that gutted a Rawhiti Domain heritage building was caused by multiple fires being lit inside, fire investigators have found.
The fire was reported at about 2.30am last Monday, but by the time emergency services arrived at the site the building was “al-most totally gone”.
Fire investigator Bruce Irvine said multiple fires had been lit inside.
“Unfortunately people like
watching fires, that’s all there is to it . . . I believe that it was deliberately lit.
The building, just off Bowhill Rd, North New Brighton, was one of the first radio stations in Christchurch, before it was used as a Scout den among other com-munity facilities.
A Fire Service spokesman confirmed that a firefighter was injured, but couldn’t comment on the injury or the extent of the injury.
Police declined to comment on

Tradesmen’s vehicles are being targeted by thieves in the Parklands area.
Police say they have deployed more patrols to the area after a rise in “opportunistic” thieves stealing tools from vehicles.
Volume Crime Squad De-tective Senior Sergeant Scott Anderson said they were also targeting known offenders in a
bid to crack down on thefts and burglaries.
New Brighton police Senior Sergeant Dave Robertson said after a spike in car thefts last month it was now dropping off.
Burwood-Pegasus Com-munity Board member Linda Stewart said because of the high number of rebuilds in Parkland the suburb had turned from “a peaceful area into an easy target for criminals”.
“What you tend to hear about is an empty house, either for repairs or marked for demolition. That leaves the house next door to it vulnerable, and I think that’s where the criminals are seeing opportunities,” she said.
Detective Senior Sergeant Anderson said while they had no evidence of this, tradesmen were urged to keep their vehicles secure.

From looking at your photos, they are pretty amazing. What inspired you to get into photography and how long have you been doing it for?
I have been doing it for nine years but it was when my sister Theresa died that I really got into it. I just realised how important photos are.
Could you tell me a bit about your sister?
We were just like normal sisters and I was lucky because mum and dad took a lot of photos and videos and as soon as I found out she passed away, the photos of her automatically became the most precious item I had of hers.
My sister loved to laugh, she was amazing with kids, so very caring and would have made the most brilliant teacher. She was just getting started, when I photographed her one sunny
afternoon, I never in a million years would have thought that it would be for the last time. I’m so grateful for these im-ages, I hear her laugh every time I look at it. She was 19. She was crossing the road while on holiday in Australia and was hit by a motor-cycle. It was pretty hideous.
Is your sister the only sister
you have?Yes and I am older than her. I
also have a little brother called Johnno. He is 25. My sister is now 28. It will now be 10 years since she passed away. Which is just mental. Luckily my dad used to take a lot of videos of us. My sister and I used to make music videos with each other.
We both loved putting on shows and singing together.
She inspired you to get into Operation Sugar as well?
It probably all comes back to that. Just wanting to be able to photograph other people. It gives a bit back.
Tell me a bit about the organisation?
An assignment will come in and I handle the photography side of things and I make sure the child involved had the right photographer for them. Obvi-ously it is quite a sensitive time and we have to make sure the photographers are comfortable with that. We have done about 515 cakes in that time and pho-tographed about 250 children and their families.
Is Operation Sugar mainly the opportunity for children with illnesses to have their special birthday cakes made for them and professional photos taken?
Yes, and we also donate “por-trait sessions” so some families opt for that. We may be swap-ping to do more portrait sittings at the parties but that is still in the pipeline.
Bit of planning going on there. For you personally what is the greatest part of your role being a volunteer for such an organisation?
It’s hard because you know that the children and families won’t truly understand the gift of photography until something happens. So it’s getting those emails from people that really appreciate it.

memories for sick children
I definitely think it has made me a better photographer – it has made me realise how important my job is. Making sure I get that connection between the people I am photographing. Making sure I capture that relationship.
For example, I recently pho-tographed a little boy who was going to pass away and I wanted to capture the way he looked at his sister. She was only little but it was so she could remember how he looked at her.
Trying to capture the reality of the moment?
It is the connection between people that I think is important. I am no longer trying to get
photos where people are looking at the camera and are perfect. I am trying to get people looking at each other – a real moment.
Do you find that is quite a skill to master?
I think you have got to have the type of personal-ity where people feel it is okay to open up with you. You have almost got to be a bit silly. It is all psychology.
Do you have a par-ticular style you enjoy capturing most?
Definitely children. I love the challenge because a lot of kids can be hard to
photograph and get an authentic photo of them. And I love trying to get that.
I mainly do editing on the background to make the photo look scene-like. I want the chil-dren to look a bit magical.
Is it really hard photograph-ing children who are ill?
Yes, you definitely come home and realise how lucky you are and I guess there is a certain amount of guilt that comes with that. I don’t know why.
I saw on your website you have a passion for child-led education. Is that why your children are homeschooled?
Yes, part of the reason why. My husband is a pilot so his hours are all over the show – he is on a roster.
In your opinion how does homeschooling benefit your children?
They are free to learn their reading, writing and maths through their own interests. For example, my son Jake abso-lutely loves space. Instead of reading the normal books you read at school he is more happy to read a science book.
What are your children most interested in at the moment?
Ellie-May is quite like me. She will love her sport and she is quite creative too. Jake is as well. The other reason we did
it is because I feel like art is just as important as
English and math. I think school crushes
creativity.Anything else
you would like to add about Operation Sugar?
We are always looking for more
qualified photogra-phers and there is a link
on our website to apply.
We have loads of people for the cakes but only about half request for a photographer which does surprise me.
I guess people don’t realise how important photos are. It is not just children, it is of all ages. Make sure you have your family photos done every two years. I have a lot of photos when I was little but our last professional family portrait with my sister was when I was about six.
I noticed that in my job too – I don’t get many photos with teen-agers and their families. I would give anything now to have a photo of me and my sister really connecting. I took some pho-tos of her just before she went on holiday and I am so glad I took them – she looks so happy. It sounds awful but what that person was like you do start to forget them – the characteristics they had. I don’t want to forget anything.
It’s interesting because I find when you are younger you have so many photos taken and now it is not as many. Mums are quite guilty of it too. The way media portrays how women’s bodies are suppose to be, a lot of women don’t feel comfortable in front of the camera.

Readers respond to a possible $25,000 budget for transitional projects such as deck chairs, hammocks and hole-in-the-wall photo opportunities in the east.
Dianne and Ted Kavanaugh: The city council thinking of spending this amount of money on deck chairs and hammocks is incomprehensible.
We have suffered for so long in this area, and put up with so much. Not to mention dirty streets, a mall that is too often covered in rubbish, roads that are in desperate need of repair, and footpaths that are dangerous for so many people to navigate.
As a ratepayer for 30-plus years I want my money put where it is most needed.
Let’s get New Brighton cleaned up, and stop mucking around and get started on the rebuilding of New Brighton. Let’s get this place back to where it was all those years ago when we first moved here, a vibrant cheerful place where people from all over the city wanted to visit.
The sooner we start on the essentials the quicker we can get rid of the crime that has grown since the quakes, and the sooner the people can finally heal.
Time for all elected persons to start doing the job that they were elected for, and the main thing is for once in their career, listen to those opinions that are of the utmost importance, the people who live here.
Just for my curiosity how long do they expect these deck chairs and hammocks to actually last? Unfortunately too many will be destroyed.
Ivor Jones: You know what fate awaited the deck chairs on the Titanic? They all ended up at the bottom of the sea.
I wonder what the intelligent people at the city council have to do, apart from thinking up hare-brained ideas like this?
They really need to get their priorities into perspective and repair the infrastructure over this side of town and do it properly.
Perhaps they are just throw-ing us another ‘smoke screen’ to take our minds away from the real issues.
It really is a mess and so is the administration.
Terry Moyse: Deck chairs and hammocks, why not include flowering wheelbarrows? What a load of rubbish.
What New Brighton needs most is a real cleanup. It is by far the filthiest suburb in Christ-church and it is not the fault of the local residents.
We do our best to keep the place clean. The city council and City Care do not do more than the bare essentials in the streets and the beach car parks, the lat-ter being the least cleaned.
I have noticed clothing, dirty toilet paper and other types of rubbish still in the area since the freedom camper invasion and they have been gone from the area for over a month.
The problem is old – ‘this is only New Brighton, not much effort is required’. The city council and City Care should take a look at all the beach areas in the rest of New Zealand where effort is made to ensure that a visit to the local beach is a pleasant day out, not stumbling over long accumulated rubbish.
Andrea Floyd: What planet is the city council on? New Brigh-ton doesn’t need money wasted on hammocks and deck chairs.
We need the bins emptied so rubbish doesn’t blow down the street and we need the roads and pot holes fixed.
We need the weeds in gutters sprayed so water can flow prop-erly after it has rained.
We need the basic things done which we pay rates for and not some stupid idea which is totally unnecessary.
Roly McConnell: I have just read the article in the Pegasus Post about the city council and another one of its hare-brained ideas to spend $25,000 on deck chairs and hammocks in New Brighton.
What an absolute waste of money. How long would the chairs and hammocks last in New Brighton?
They will be either stolen or trashed.
We have seen the results of the $35,000 spent on the painting on the footpaths which have faded and look tacky.
When is the council going to make some decent decisions that are actually going to benefit us in the east?
If it was in Merivale would they be painting footpaths
or putting in deck chairs or hammocks?
I doubt it. Start spending money on the holes in the car parks on the Hawke St side, they are atrocious.
Sharon Wright: I would like to make a response to the article you had in the Pegasus Post.
I am struggling to see if there is any intelligence behind this suggestion.
Why would you want deck chair and hammocks installed, only to get wrecked by thugs when the whale pool doesn’t have good shading or seating for families?
The New Brighton beach area has had rubbish bins removed so the bins overflow on a busy day.
I believe some people are in la-la land and have their priori-ties badly mixed up.
Please sort out the existing issues before we get a few warm fuzzies added that will have no real lasting improvement.
The place looks like a sham-ble.
Don Smith: I’m amazed that city council employees have the time to dream up these ridicu-lous notions. Even more shock-ing is the proposed cost.
This amount of money should be added to the funds for the new pool (should it ever get under way).
Even more disturbing is the thought that our elected repre-sentatives are being sidelined by council employees.
This is a matter that needs correction.
Alan Fort: I rarely respond to these questions in the local pa-pers and this is a prime example of why.
It is clearly a waste of energy trying to communicate with people who have clearly lost their minds.
New Brighton looks like a Third World slum and only a bulldozer will fix it.
Any spare money should be directed to the Eastern Suburb Sport and Recreation Centre project where it will benefit the entire community.
Gill Sinclair: $25,000 for deck chairs and hammocks for New Brighton? What nonsense! Is this a cynical ‘showing we’re doing something to fix it’ ges-ture?
It wouldn’t have worked on the Titanic – re-arranging a few deck chairs in New Brighton isn’t going to cut it either.
People in the eastern suburbs feel abandoned and it’s up to the city council to show it has a truer appreciation of the needs and priorities of this area.
A battered place it may be, but still striving.
Spend the money on projects of genuine substance, enhance what we have in ways which will benefit the environment and the lives of those who live here and visit.
Get essential repairs done, keep the place clean.
The city council needs to talk more with the locals – get the basics right first before we start thinking of themed accessories.
And wouldn’t those ham-mocks be a bit chilly in the winter?
Phyllis and Peter Seymour: We have read the Pegasus Post with the proposal to install deck chairs and hammocks in New Brighton.
It is good that the city coun-cil is actually looking at doing something nice in the area, but it would be far better to resurface all the car parks, maybe plant a few trees in them (like many of the other mall car parks) and also get a mall cleaner on a regu-lar basis to clean up rubbish and any graffiti.
We love the area but are find-ing roads and pavements in a dreadful state, both for cars and pedestrians.
Is the rubbish bin and street cleaning problem really that bad in New Brighton? Send in your photos of problem sites. Email fraser.walker@

A SNAPSHOT OF 2016We’ve largely completed our enormous
work in the central city. Most of the SCIRT
works this year are in the suburbs.
It’s still all go in the east of Christchurch
and some suburbs are getting even busier.
The good news is that SCIRT’s road cones

What’s SCIRT doing in 2016?SCIRT has started the final big push to finish its work by the end of 2016. SCIRT’s programme of repairs to pipes, roads, bridges and retaining walls will be completed by December.
After SCIRT, Christchurch City Council and NZ Transport Agency will continue their programmes of ongoing repairs.
Your support is helping us get the job done. Thank you from the SCIRT team. We’re now 84% through our programme.
• A third of SCIRT’s work in 2016 is fully focused on fixing the east
• It will be just as busy there as it has been in the last four years
• SCIRT crews are ramping up works on the wastewater, storm water and roads in Parklands
• There’s no let up also on repairs to wastewater, storm water and roads in Linwood
• Homes are starting to be connected to the new vacuum wastewater network in Aranui. The final roading work there is well underway
• Repairs are winding down in Avondale and Shirley in the next six months
• Most of SCIRT’s work across all of Brighton will be done by about mid-year too

Moll’s Dolls have placed second in the recent Masters Games Dance Sport competition, held in Dunedin.
In their first year in the com-petition, 57-year-old Bromley resident Molly Chapman’s tap dancing troupe Moll’s Dolls took home silver medals in the sports dance category.
The troupe was made up of six tap dancers, who together have had well over 100 years’ experience, and range from 35 to 63-years-old.
Mrs Chapman said she was over the moon with her team’s performance.
“I’m just so excited because for us it really was going into the unknown. We were going into a ballroom competition as tap dancers and placed second. We’re all first-time competi-tors,” she said.
After suffering a stroke after the earthquakes, Mrs Chapman began tutoring the group, but not competing – but thanks to a team member pulling out late due to work, she was given her chance.
“I had to learn the whole rou-tine in just a couple of weeks, and thankfully it all came to-
gether on the night,” she said.Although in just their first
entry they took home second place medals.
“It was great just to participate, let alone to place. But personally, I don’t understand how first place beat us – they were a local group, but I think we were better,” said Mrs Chapman.

Dolls take a slice of success A Parklands man is walking not
only to benefit his health, but the help out those struggling from the effects of natural disasters.
David Hill (right) decided the time was right to do something about his weight and cholesterol issues, while his house in Park-lands is being repaired.
Mr Hill began preparing to complete a series of challenging walks of more than 10km dur-ing February and March.
“I am overweight, weighing in at 108kg and my doctor has discussed cholesterol medica-tion with me. But I’m not ready to go on medication for the rest of my life,” he said.
With his walking challenge he decided to raise awareness of the people struggling to recover from natural disasters in Third World countries, such as the Philippines and Haiti.
The walks would take place at different locations around Canterbury, including Rangiora, Timaru, Hanmer Springs, Horo-rata and New Brighton.
Through these walks, all be-ing documented on his Face-book page, Mr Hill plans to raise awareness and money for projects supported by Christ-church-based Christian World Service.
“I know what it is like to
live through a natural disaster, to face an uncertain future, to put your life on hold and all that goes with it. But my life is getting back on track, so now it’s time to help others who do not have the same certainty,” he said.
After the consultation with his doctor, Mr Hill thought up the idea while driving.
“It was just some crazy idea I had. I thought I needed to do something big otherwise I will just keep finding excuses not to get fit,” he said.
He also plans to enter the City2Surf on Sunday, March 20, for an extra challenge.

IN AWE: The under-10s team at the New Brigh-ton Rugby Club were “in awe” when Crusader Ryan Crotty talked to them about their favourite sport. The team were awarded the ‘best and fairest team’ award in a competition they were in last year, and the club asked one of their old boys, Crotty, to present the award to the team. Junior club captain Michael Woodrow said Crotty was “only too happy to help us out.”

The city’s top waka paddlers are in full training mode as they look ahead to the world championships on the Sunshine Coast.
Team Aoraki Matatu from Te Waka Pounamu have qualified for the world championships after winning the national men’s master’s title at the Waka Ama national championships.
The competition was held at Lake Karapiro in Cambridge on January 21-23.
It was the first time the team of Jack Wormald, Iaean Cran-well, Ross Gilray, Todd Jago,
Craig Pauling and former Cru-sader Adrian Tukaki competed in the master’s grade at nationals after previously paddling in the open grade.
Gilray said the team are likely
to face the strongest competition from Tahiti at the world cham-pionships, but the team believe they have a shot at winning.
“Outrigger canoeing in Tahiti is like rugby here in New Zea-
land, it is their national sport. So we will have to bring it if we want to have a chance at gold,” he said.
Finishing the heat and semi-fi-nals in second, in a time of 1min 56.50sec and 1min 57.95sec re-spectively, Gilray said the team always knew they could pull out the ‘big one’ in the final.
“We normally pull it together
at nationals, and save a little bit. Unlike rowing or kayaking, we can have four or five races in a day. It was part of our team tactics to save the best for the final,” he said.

‘Life changing’ teachers nurture
jazz talentManny Addis got hooked on
music when he was 13 years old. After years of playing in high school bands he decided
to pursue his dream: being a jazz musician. He studied CPIT’s Bachelor of Music Arts in Jazz and loved it.
“CPIT immediately felt like home. I’ve always had a passion for music, but I never took it seriously. I was a bit nervous on my first day, but meeting like-minded people was awesome. We were like a big family.”
He studied two years of Jazz and then ‘arranging’ in his third year, to learn to compose music. The teachers really made a difference, he says;
“The teachers were absolutely life changing. They go the extra mile for you, it goes way beyond just teaching in class. You can form a band with them and they give advice. I would always take music to one of the tutors during lunch time and he was really supportive.”
The energy and inspiration Manny got from his teachers he now passes on to his own students, by teaching at the School of Rock.
“The teachers used a very personal way of teaching. They try to make you play like yourself, developing your own style. I am trying to do this with my students as well and of course I try to make it fun too.”
Manny loves teaching, but standing on a stage and performing for a big crowd is what makes his heart beat faster.
“At least once a week I’m on stage, playing guitar in my band or DJ’ing. Once I opened before the Gorillaz, which was awesome. When the show is going well, it instantly makes you feel amazing. You feel the energy.”
Manny is grateful with where he is in his life at the moment. CPIT played a big role in that, he says;
“I don’t feel like any of the musical stuff I’m doing now, I could have done without the Bachelor of Music Arts. The course developed my skills, made me meet the right people in the industry and helped me get close relationships with other musicians in Christchurch.”
To learn more about CPIT Aoraki’s Bachelor of Music Arts, visit www.cpit.ac.nz or phone 0800 24 24 76 for more information.
CPIT Aoraki’s new Motion Design qualification reflects huge technological shifts that are blurring lines between film, gaming, online
multimedia and art, says a key contributor to the innovative new programme.
CPIT Aoraki tutor Tim Budgen has seen multimedia evolve during the last 15 years of teaching in Art & Design at CPIT.
“I am definitely interested in the convergence of art and technology and in non-traditional outcomes for multimedia work. There is a good representation of this in Christchurch where you have, for example, projections onto graffiti in the Spectrum festival, Gapfiller projects challenging norms and bringing people into creative spaces in the city, lots of street art and the Giraffes project where painted giraffes started appearing around the city.
“There was an underground of non-traditional art here before, but it has really expanded since the earthquakes and gained huge awareness and acceptance.”
This expansion of art, combined with Tim’s connections, opens opportunities for students. In winter, for example, Motion Design students will help to create a light installation and animation event in the Christchurch Botanic Gardens.
Tim’s industry experience, specialising in interactive video installations for live music events has further convinced him that CPIT Aoraki is on the right track - preparing graduates with the tools and the creative critical thinking skills that this fast moving industry needs.
Graduates of the multimedia specialisation
3D, animation, gaming - Art & Design is evolving fast. CPIT Aoraki’s new Motion Design programme reflects the crossovers and changes
in this exciting industry.
Creative students take part as technology dissolves boundaries
are working in a variety of companies. “A lot of our students are interested in film and gaming, but some specialise in drawing and concept art. We have graduates at Christchurch game design companies Stickman and Cerebral Fix, quite a few at WETA in different roles, some doing digital design for web, one is working as an artist and another developed an app for his final year project which is available on the app store.”
The Bachelor of Design (Motion Design) uses the latest industry equipment including Cinema 4D for modelling, animating, lighting, texturing and rendering. CPIT Aoraki enjoys a close relationship with Cinema 4D creators Maxon and distributors Megabits who support the programme with software and a major prize for the best 3D work.

Learning stems from home
A return home to Christchurch for one young local family has seen boutique Home Based Childcare service
“Stems FROM HOME” begin to sow learning seeds in the mainland.
After 5 very successful years of
‘growing young minds’ in east Auckland, Emma McAlister is very excited to be able to share the infectious Stems passion for babies, toddlers and young children with her fellow Cantabrians.
Following the latest in early brain development research Stems fosters
the belief that our little ones learn best when able to form an attachment to one other significant care-giver when family cannot be there to nurture them. The ability for each child’s learning journey to grow individually from their own interests and at their own pace,
using natural and authentic learning environments is key to Stems excellent reputation. These key guidelines, coupled with the practical aspects of small ‘family’ groups, affordability, proximity to home, reduced child illness and stress for the children with all learning underpinned by the NZ ECE curriculum ensures that Stems stands out as an excellent option for many young families locally.
Due to growth, Stems are looking to recruit more special Home Based Educators now! If young children naturally warm to you and you are wanting a career with family friendly hours please contact Emma directly to discuss today on 0800 78 33 78 [email protected]
through empowering and challenging their thinking. Our doors are always open to families and whānau to visit or join in at any time with our daily activities.
Our newly painted centre can’t be missed, we are cyan blue and white located next to the shops on Briggs Road, situated between the Mairehau and Shirley area. We are also situated alongside a fantastic community hub that is available to our families for parenting guidance.
We have a great offer available to all families at the moment where you can receive 30 free hours care for 2 to 5 year olds (conditions apply) at our centre. Pop in today or give us a call on (03) 385-6148 as we would love to help you with your childcare needs.

HYDRATE TO ELEVATEWe all know drinking water is important, but the majority of us simply don’t drink enough even though we know it makes us feel great when we do. We look at the benefits and motivate you to drink more with a few tips on how to make it just a little more palatable.
With over a quarter of Kiwis consuming less than two glasses of water a day and only 5% drinking
more than the recommended eight, the message obviously hasn’t hit home on the importance of hydrating our body.
A recent survey conducted by SodaStream found that Cantabrians are particularly guilty when it comes to their water intake.
With 82% drinking less than six glasses of water a day, but with over 85% admitting they feel healthier when they drink more water, something needs to be done to bridge the gap in terms of what we know to be true and what we’re actually doing about it.
This same survey revealed that although 41% of us limit how many soft drinks we consume due to our concerns over sugar content, the same number of people said tea or coffee is this their
number one drink of choice. Some people even believe that the water
consumed in their cup of Joe constitutes part of their water intake. This is a fallacy.
As caffeine actually dehydrates us, as does alcohol too, it means we need to drink even more water to compensate.
Not so surprisingly the reason we don’t drink nearly enough water is that we simply forget. Now with apps you can download direct to your smart phone, there are no more excuses.
Further studies proved that people who had a SodaStream machine in their homes were more likely to drink more water.
In fact, the study showed that people drank 30% more water.
For those of us who aren’t used to drinking water like it’s going out of fashion, there are plenty of ways to increase the fun factor while still being healthy.
By simply turning tap water into sparkling water with a SodaStream
machine and adding a splash of fresh lemon juice or naturally squeezed fruit juice, is bound to have a positive impact on
our health and wellbeing.
