The goal of this course is to fulfill the need in the practicing pediatric community to increase and improve competence in the field of pediatric medicine and to integrate best practices based on evidence- based medicine and current research. Dr. Ngo reached out to division leaders to discuss potential topics related to their subspecialty that may be of particular interest to the general practitioner. This will assist in closing the gap between community and academic medicine. Reasons to refer to a tertiary care center will also be discussed. Who Should Attend This activity is intended for pediatricians, general practitioners, nurse practitioners, PAs, pediatric subspecialists, pediatric residents, pediatric subspecialty fellows, family practitioners and other allied health professionals interested in the care of infants, children and adolescents. Objectives After attending this activity, the participant will demonstrate the ability to: Explain different radiological modalities and scenarios for utilization. Recall the new guideleines for Brief Resolved Unexplained Event (BRUE). Identify “red flags” for malignancy in a patient presenting with lymphadenopathy. Generate a list of the necessary workup for a patient with lymphadenopathy concerning for malignancy. Discuss the causes and management of anemia in various pediatric age groups through case presentations. Diagnose Kawasaki Disease based on new updates. Explain when to screen for hypertension in children and adolescents. Evaluate and manage the pediatric patient with hypertension. Recognize the complexity of neonatal abstinence syndrome and factors that affect its presentation. Discuss and provide optimal assessment and intervention for infants and their mothers affected by neonatal abstinence syndrome. Describe the organizational structure and services provided through school health services and school based health centers in Maryland. Discuss epidemiology of vector-borne infections and common clinical presentations. Diagnose and manage mood and anxiety disorders. Utilize the Neonatal Sepsis Calculator to determine sepsis risk. Identify variations in typical feeding/swallowing development and signs of problems. Describe pathophysiology of pediatric obstructive sleep apnea. Recognize the presentation of pediatric stroke and time sensitivity of diagnosis. Recall common pediatric rashes and their uncommon presentations. Identify common pediatric endocrine disorders and describe the management of these illnesses. Discuss the differences between wheat sensitivity and celiac disease. Identify red-flags that increase your index of suspicion for a pediatric sarcoma. Recognize undiagnosed or first time seizure and management of comorbidities (ADHD, mood disorders, school difficulties, drug side effects).
