First we looked at how various uses are distributed throughout the community.

Categories include Residential, Commercial, Education, Recreation and Industrial.

Then a half mile (0.5 mi.) buffer was created in order to determine which commercial areas were readily accessible to residential neighborhoods.

Yellow indicates residential areas while red indicates commercial or commercially zoned property.

The 0.5 mile buffer is shown as a red line.

This process was repeated for educational and recreational areas

The three separate buffers were then used to create a single comprehensive buffer

From here we can focus on even smaller areas

Focus areas are determined by likelihood of pedestrian facilities being used by the general public.

Some of the areas shown here have a good mix of residential, commercial, recreation and transit opportunities.

Here a closer view of the “Maple Hill to Carver” Focus Area shows proposed sidewalk improvements with a dashed yellow line. These proposed improvements connect existing residential areas to established commercial developments.

The Music City Star rail station provides an excellent hub where several pedestrian facilities could connect. By extending sidewalks along Hill, Greenwood and Fairview Streets, we can establish a solid network that would encourage use of the rail and improve access to Cumberland University, City Hall, The Mill and the Jimmy Floyd Family Center.
