PDMSS CARING COMMUNITY NEWS TOGETHER WE MAKE A DIFFERENCE MAY 11, 2012 DEAR FAMILY AND FRIENDS OF PDMSS, Throughout the school this week, children were busy creating Mother’s Day gifts. From stepping stone, to paintings, to poetry and more, everyone was focused on Mom. I think of motherhood as the opportunity to touch the future. We do this by raising our children to be responsible, caring, and compassionate people who will have a positive inAluence on the society they live in. My mother valued caring for others, any living creature, so much so that she raised a nurse, an educator, and a zookeeper! I’ve tried to pass on this same lesson of caring for others, to my own daughters. I see in them the desire to help others, to improve our world through service. One daughter is working for a nonproAit afterschool organization in San Francisco, one is volunteering in Special Education, and the youngest has been a member of Delians since 6 th grade. Delians is an honor society that requires its members to give a certain number of volunteer hours each year while maintaining a high GPA. On Friday our Caring Community gathered to recognize parents and staff who feel this same desire to touch the future through service. The annual Honorary Service Award Luncheon was a wonderful opportunity to stop and say thank you and recognize people for giving, as Ms Calek said, “the most precious gift, the gift of time.” A big thank you goes out to Ken Harris for organizing the awards and serving as the Master of Ceremonies. A thank you also goes out to Michelle Russo, Darren Omelia and all of their helpers, for organizing the luncheon and providing us with a beautiful space to gather. On this Mother’s Day take a moment to thank your mom for all the lessons she has taught you and the positive inAluence she has had on your life. Then take a moment to appreciate your own children and enjoy the day being a mom to such wonderful kids. Happy Mother’s Day to you all! With Warm Regards, Rebecca Johnson Principal

SUMMER ADVENTURE

TEACHER FEATURESummer Adventure Teacher Feature:

This summer Diane Farlow will be teaching 1st/2nd grade classes for all three sessions of Summer Adventure. Diane actually began her career in teaching here at PDMSS as a student teacher many years ago. She then went on to teach at Juan Cabrillo before taking a leave to spend time with her young children. She has been the reading specialist at Pt. Dume for the past three years and making a huge difference in the lives of our young readers. This summer she will be teaching Beachy Keen, Artist to Artist, and Crazy for Habitats.

Some of our classes are beginning to close out with full enrollment; whereas, others are low in enrollment and may need to be canceled. If you are interested in signing up for Summer Adventure and have not done so, please take the time to do it this week. It is offered here at Pt. Dume for all students grades K-6

from 8:30-12:30 starting June 25th-July20th. After school care will be provided by Children's Creative Workshop. Summer Adventure registration forms are online at www.smmpta.org or available in the front office. Please contact me with any questions or concerns at [email protected] or (310) 457-9370 ext.78101.
