Our school wide Spelling Bee

was impressive! Congratulations to

Sammy, the winner of this year’s,

and last year’s, Spelling Bee.

Sammy now moves on to the next

level and represents PDMSS at the

Los Angeles County Scripp’s Spelling

Bee. Certificates for all of the

participates will be given out during

the Morning Assembly on Monday. Congratulations to all the students who participated in our Bee on

Friday and good luck Sammy!

Thank you to those parents who have already donated to the Vision for Student Success (VSS)!

Remember that the VSS is the new funding model the district is implementing in the 2014-2015 school

year. A special edition of the Caring Community News was sent out earlier this month giving an overview

of the changes and has been included in this newsletter. Feel free to ask me any questions you may have

about the changes.

There is just one week left to reach the VSS’ fundraising goal so please take a moment to read

about VSS, click on the link, and make a donation. Your donation supports all of the students in our

district, including PDMSS!

How many of you remember your first day on the PDMSS campus? How many of you attended a

Kindergarten Round Up to find out about our wonderful school? This year’s Kindergarten Round Up is

taking place on February 20th. Please let any and all prospective parents know about this great event and

that we look forward to meeting them! A flyer is included in this newsletter and is also available in the

school office.

The City of Malibu has changed the way they would like to

communicate upcoming events to the public. In the past they have sent

out news releases that were passed along to you in the newsletter. With

the new system you will receive the press releases via your email. You are

able to customize which types of notifications you receive. Go to the City

of Malibu website, click on e-notifications, and begin receiving information

about events that interest you.

For the past two weeks I’ve included reminders about the

importance of getting to school on time in the newsletter. This week

there’s a flyer that lists several reasons why establishing the habit of

arriving to school on time is valuable. Please take a look and remember

that simply beginning your morning routine five minutes earlier can make a

big difference!

Dear Family and Friends of PDMSS,

In the 2014-2015 school year our district is transitioning to a new fund raising model called Vision for Student Success or VSS. During this school year I am asking you to contribute to PDMSS and to the VSS fund. Below are the ways you can support programs at PDMSS for this school year, help us prepare for funding our programs in the 2014-2015 school year, and ways to give during the 2014-2015 school year.

The ways you can give in the 2013-2014 school year:

1. Donate to PDMSS Direct Investment. We have $167,00 left to raise to continue:

• Science Lab and Teacher

• Instructional Assistants

• Reading Teachers

• Technology

2. Donate to the Vision for Student Success by giving $365 or a dollar a day to the Education Foundation and fund our programs for the 2014-15 school year. Donating is easy. Just click on this link: www.smmef.org/donate.

3. Attend Cirque du Soleil’s Totem on January 24th! Your purchase includes tickets, a dinner, and 100% of the proceeds will go to SMMEF.

Of course both funds would be happy to accept any donation (large or small!) that you can contribute!

The ways you can give next year in the 2014-2015 school year:

• Marine science lab equipment and tech (Science Teacher will be paid from our district’s general fund)

Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District launches Homework Survey

January 6, 2014 —!As part of its commitment to transparency and collaborative decision-making, Santa Monica-Malibu USD invites all parents to participate in the District’s online Homework Survey. Principals will use the results of the survey to develop and improve each of their schools’ homework plans. Parents with more than one child in the district are invited to take the survey for each of their children. The survey is anonymous and will take approximately 10 minutes to complete. Results of the survey will be reported at the group level only and will not identify individual responses. The Homework Survey can be accessed on the main page of the District’s website and will available until January 31, 2014. Future surveys are planned that will give parents further opportunities to give feedback on various aspects of the district and their children’s schools.
