It is a Small World – A Very, Very, Very Small World!

Project Due Date: _______________________________________ Presentation Due Date: _______________________________________ Background: You will be in groups of two; you will develop a Human

community that has a similar structure and function as that of a plant cell and animal cell. Your group will present this idea to the class.

Problem: How does a plant cell’s organelles relate to a human

community? Hypothesis: _________________________________________________ _________________________________________________. Procedure: 1. Your group will develop two communities one that resembles a plant cell and

another that resembles an animal cell. This community must have similar members functioning within the community as that of the cellular community.

2. You must first create a draft that details the layout of both your plant and animal cell. You can use any of the materials specified by your teacher. Please include a list of materials and procedures that you will undergo for developing both communities. You must receive your teacher approval’s prior to creating your project.

3. Your plant cell community must have the following parts: cell wall, cell membrane, nucleus, vacuole, chloroplast, mitochondria, cytoplasm, endoplasmic reticulum, nucleolus, ribosomes, and Golgi complex.

4. Your animal cell community must have the following parts: cell membrane, nucleus, vacuole, centriole, mitochondria, cytoplasm, endoplasmic reticulum, nucleolus, ribosomes, and Golgi complex.

5. After approval is received, begin the creation of your project. Make sure to label which member of the community serves the function similar to each cellular organelle.

6. Here’s the hard part, design a presentation to communicate your idea to your fellow classmates. You may want to make a script to help you talk to the class. You may want to design handouts.

Jell-O® Cell Model Background: A great technique that can be used to reinforce the size and structure of membrane bound organelles is the use of a Jell-O® Cell. This model is extremely helpful because it’s relatively cheap to construct and provides an excellent three dimensional view of a cell. Students find it difficult to visualize the cell. Most forget that they are walking around with trillions of these things inside them. The model is constructed with use of various food items. We suggest using a light colored Jell-o to allow for a transparent view through the cell you are about to construct. We suggest you avoid the urge to use green Jell-O for the plant since green is a difficult color to see through. Jell-O® Cell Model (cont.) Additional Materials Needed: -Non-stick Cooking Spray -8 oz plastic cups -Jell-O mix (light color) -Access to boiled water for making Jell-O -Plastic Spoon -Tooth Picks -Masking Tape Preparation:

1. Prepare the Jell-O as per the package directions. Spray the Non-stick cooking spray in each cup. Fill each cup halfway. Fill 2 cups for every cell you wish to create. If the directions require you to boil water, make sure cool the Jell-O prior to adding the mixture to the plastic cup so that your cups does not melt.

2. After Jell-O is prepared, slide the Jell-O out of the cups by using a plastic knife and running warm water around the edge. Your Jell-O should look like Figure 1 (below).

3. Cut Jell-O in half as shown in Figure 2. After the cut has been made, place top and bottom half piece flat side down on a plate.

4. Spoon out sections to place your organelles. Make sure to use the top and bottom half evenly this will allow you to distribute the weight evenly and make the cell more stable.

5. Using your masking tape, create a label for each cellular organelle. Attach the tape to a toothpick and label the cell parts. After the lesson, we recommend you remove the toothpicks and have the students place them on the correct organelles as a short quiz.
