Sea Power General Winfield Scott was a general with the Union during the American Civil War. Scott thought that the North had to win the struggle, and to do that would need to conquer each southern state territory. Scott presented a plan whose goal would be to present a naval blockade. The blockade would ultimately cut off all trade among the Confederacy and other countries. As the North prepared to block the 3,500-mile coastline of the South, the South was busy preparing defense plans, both by land and by water.

Southern Coastline A major problem the Union faced in sending ships to patrol and block the Confederacy coastline was that there were no ports for the Union vessels to dock. As a result, the ships had no where to refuel. Food supplies were unable to be replenished. Needed repairs could not be made. Due to this condition, the Union was only able to send approximately half of their fleet to block the southern water territory.

Mississippi River The Mississippi River is filled with miles of navigational tributaries. The Mississippi River was always at the forefront of the American Civil War. The North and the South both vied for control of the Mississippi. Both sides realized the importance of the river. Supply boats carried supplies to both sides of the battle. The Mississippi River also provided the North with specific routes to help in the North’s invasion of Confederate territory.
