Sometime we make mistakes without deliberation and intention.

The Prophet (saw) said, "Piety is good manner, and sin is that which creates doubt and you do not like people to know of it.“

(HR Muslim)

The trouble with human beings is that they can never, ever reach a state in which they will not commit sins.

Those whom Allah has blessed with higher ranks of righteousness (taqwa), can reach a level in which the regularity of their sins is greatly reduced, but no believer can ever rest at peace about not committing a sin in the future.

Mistakes made by some of the twenty-five Prophets mentioned in the Quran were pointed out publicly by God so that we can all learn from them.

Adam’s error of judgment is well-documented.

Jonah made the mistake of giving up on his community

“Then they both ate of the tree, and so their private parts appeared to them, and they began to put on themselves leaves from Paradise for their covering. Thus did Adam disobey his Lord, so he went astray.”

Even the blessed Prophet Muhammad was reprimanded by God in the chapter ’Abasa’.

He was intently engaged in conveying the message of Islam to several of the important leaders of the Makkan tribe of Quraysh, when a blind man named `Abdullah ibn Umm Makhtum repeatedly interrupted him to seek spiritual guidance.

Page 11: All about mistakes -Methodology of the Prophet s.a.w in Correcting People

Page 11

God then publicly reproached His Prophet for his misjudged priorities through direct revelation of Quranic verses (‘Abasa 80:3–11).

The blind man wasn’t even able to see the frown, yet Prophet Muhammad was still reprimanded.

1 ) Lack of knowledge.

Allah says: “It is only those who have knowledge among Allah's servants who fear Him.”

(Fathir : 28)

2 ) Social pressures.

Rasulullah (saw) said: “A man will follow the way of his close friends, so let each one of you look at who he takes as a close friend.”

(HR Abu Dawud; Hassan)

3 ) Sense of pride and arrogance.

(Allah) said: "What prevented you (O Iblis) that you did not prostrate yourself, when I commanded you?" Iblis said: "I am better than him (Adam), You created me from fire, and him You created from clay."

(Al `Araf : 12)

4 ) Not taking minor sins seriously .

Rasulullah (saw) said: “Beware of minor sins, for they will pile up until they destroy a person”

(HR Ahmad; Shahih)

Page 16: All about mistakes -Methodology of the Prophet s.a.w in Correcting People

5 ) Abandoning the practice of enjoining good and forbidding evil.

Rasulullah (saw) said: “If the people see an evil and they do not change it, soon Allah will inflict them all with His Punishment ”

(HR Ahmad; Shahih)

Effects Of Sinning

According to Ibn Qayyum

Rasulullah (saw) said: “A man is deprived of provision because of the sins that he commits ”

(HR Ibn Majah; Hassan)

A sinful person experiences a sense of alienation (indifference) with his Lord, and between him and other people.

One of the salaf had said that he could see the impact of disobedience to Allah (in some aspects of his daily life).

Page 20: All about mistakes -Methodology of the Prophet s.a.w in Correcting People

Page 20

A person who commits sins sees that things become difficult for him. In any matter that he turns to, he finds the way blocked and difficult. As for the one who fears Allah, things are made easy.

Ibn ‘Abaas said: “Good deeds make the face light, give light to the heart, and bring about ample provision, physical strength and love in people’s hearts. Bad deeds make the face dark, give darkness to the heart, and bring about physical weakness, a lack of provision and hatred in people’s hearts.”

Sin breeds sin until it dominates a person and he cannot escape from it. Sin weakens a person’s willpower.

It gradually strengthens his will to commit sin and weakens his will to repent until there is no desire to repent at all . If he expresses repentance, it is merely words uttered by the lips.

He becomes desensitized and no longer find sins abhorrent; so it becomes his habit.

Page 22

Therefore, the wise believer takes the following proactive steps in order to minimize the regularity and severity of the sins he commits:

1) He strives to gain knowledge of the levels and types of sins.

2) He focuses on racing forward in good deeds, to collect more rewards from Allah

Page 23: All about mistakes -Methodology of the Prophet s.a.w in Correcting People

Page 23

3) He tries to convey the message of Islam, commanding what is good and forbidding what is evil, to constantly remind him of the types of actions and qualities that he has to stay away from.

4) He seeks to stay in the company of pious people as much as possible, so that his chances of falling into graver sins are minimized.

Page 24: All about mistakes -Methodology of the Prophet s.a.w in Correcting People

Page 24

5) He makes repentance an integral and regular part of his life, realizing that whatever sins he will inevitably commit, can not be washed away except with daily, heartfelt, sincere repentance, and by following them up with lofty good deeds

Page 25: All about mistakes -Methodology of the Prophet s.a.w in Correcting People

Page 25

“Have taqwa (fear) of Allah wherever you may be, and follow up a bad deed with a good deed which will wipe it out, and behave well towards the people”

(HR Tirmidzi; Hassan)

“Allah the Almighty said: O son of Adam, so long as you call upon Me and ask of Me, I shall forgive you for what you have done, and I shall not mind.

O son of Adam, were your sins to reach the clouds of the sky and were you then to ask forgiveness of Me, I would forgive you.

O son of Adam, were you to come to Me with sins nearly as great as the earth and were you then to face Me, ascribing no partner to Me, I would bring you forgiveness nearly as great at it”.

(HR Tirmidzi; Hassan)
