Multicultural Public Speaking News
Matthew in Year 6 has had great success with his public speaking this year. His topic was about refugees and the impromptu topic was ‘luck’. Matthew spoke about how people who are successful have worked hard for their success and it is not just pure luck. He won the District Multicultural Public Speaking Competition and he will be competing at the State level on the 18th of November. We wish him all the best.
Debating News
The final round was held at Vaucluse Public School. The year five students were Jemima, Yshai, Jake and Sara. They debated that ‘Australia is not the best place to live’ and were very convincing and won their debate. The year 6 students – Amelia, Matthew, Romy and Grace debated that ‘Australia does not need a new flag.’ They also had great success and won their debate. We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our teams on the wonderful success that they have had all year.
Students in Years 3 and 4 enjoyed watching the way materials change states when heated
and cooled. Fizzics Education visited Rose Bay Public School on Tuesday 13th September. Students investigated how liquid nitrogen
changes the states of particular objects. This incursion complemented the Stage 2 science
unit of work ‘Melting Moments’.
Congratulations to the Junior Band for their wonderful performances recently at our morning
assembly and the Junior Band Spotlight Concert. Well done for presenting a range of solo and ensemble compositions that showcased a talented Rose Bay PS Junior Band.

Arriving at School
It has been noted that a number of students are arriving to school very early each day. In fact, some students were at school from 8.10am. That is more than an hour before the bell.
Although we encourage students to be punctual (and at times we will ask students to arrive early for supervised sports training or extra-‐ curricular activities), supervision at Rose Bay Public School does not begin until 8:50am each day.
Students who arrive at school before 8:50am are unable to be directly supervised. Please ensure that you make appropriate morning routines for your child/ren as they shouldn’t be at school before 8:50am each day, unless otherwise requested by school staff.
New Finance System -‐ LIVE
Next term, our new finance system (LMBR) will go live. Our school administrative staff have worked tirelessly to implement this new system with support from the Department of Education, and we thank them for their combined efforts. This new system will mean a more streamlined way of conducting business for schools.

Problem Solving in Mathematics
How do we teach our students to solve problems?
According to the new Mathematics K-‐10 Syllabus, students will develop the ability to make choices, interpret, formulate, model and investigate problem situations, and communicate solutions effectively. They formulate and solve problems when they use Mathematics to represent unfamiliar or meaningful situations, design investigations and plan their approaches, apply strategies to seek solutions, and verify that their answers are reasonable.
We want our students to:
ü make choices ü interpret and formulate ü design investigations ü plan approaches ü apply strategies ü verify answers ü communicate solutions
How can you help your child solve problems?
Here are some questions you can ask your child to stimulate their thinking and encourage them to be creative problem solvers. They are based on `Newman’s Prompts’ which were developed by Australian educator Anne Newman (1977).
The column on the left states the skill we want students to use. The right hand column tells you what you could say to your child to encourage them to use the skill effectively to solve the problem.
You might like to print and keep the table below and use it when you are helping your child with their homework.

SPOT THE DIFFERENCE
Changes are happening all around us. Chocolate melts in the sun, water evaporates from puddles and cement hardens in the open air. Predicting the changes that can
happen to everyday materials is important in understanding the best way to manage products.
In our Science unit titled ‘Spot the Difference’, students have been observing changes and glimpsing at the diversity of materials in their world. The year two
students have been exploring change by experimenting with foods such as ice-cream and spaghetti. They have observed how heating or cooling foods can
change their properties and whether the change is reversible. Below are some photos of our ‘Spaghetti Fun’ and ‘Spaghetti Tower’ experiments which required the cooling
and heating of spaghetti.

French Breakfast
at Rose Bay Public School
The traditional French Breakfast for Year 1, 2 and 3 took place during term 3. Croissants, baguette and chocolat chaud
was enjoyed by all, with lashings of “s’il vous plaît” and “merci”.
“I was waiting for this day to come. This is the best French breakfast ever!”
