Nassau Bay's new Chief of Police, Kenneth Campbell will begin on May 16, 2016.

Campbell joins us from the City of Santa Fe Police Department where he has been for over 20 years working through the ranks of Patrolman, Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain and now Police Chief.

“Campbell’s background and experience make him a great fit for our city. I am confident that Chief Campbell will be a great addition to Nassau Bay and will continue the

Police Department’s strong tradition of serving and protecting the community,” said City Manager Jason Reynolds.

This selection comes after an extensive search process with the assistance of Chris Reed Consulting to find the best candidate to replace Chief Joe Cashiola who retired in March 2016.

“I am excited and honored to accept the Police Chief position in Nassau Bay. I could not have hoped for a more beautiful community to work in and really look forward to serving the citizens and making new friends. I look forward to working and learning from the officers at Nassau Bay PD to promote a progressive community policing atmosphere. My goal is to continue to develop our staff and service to the community we serve,” stated Campbell. “I would be remiss not to acknowledge the outstanding tenure and service from Chief Joey Cashiola and wish him the very best in his retirement.”

Campbell holds a Master Peace Officer license through Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Standards and Education and has over 2,700 hours of continuing education and training in law enforcement. In 2002, Campbell took leave of absence to complete an 18-month mission with the United Nations as an International Police Officer in Kosovo. He is also a 2008 Graduate of the FBI National Academy Class 232nd Session.

We produce large amounts of waste in our homes, much of which can be returned to our lawns and gardens in the form of compost but instead we send to landfills. Composting is simply using the natural process of decomposing organic matter to produce humus. The humus can then be added to soil to help to retain moisture and nutrients. The primary goal of most home compost systems is to reduce and reuse the waste we produce to lead a more sustainable lifestyle. There are many other benefits from reducing costs through less water usage and producing your own soil or mulch to improving the overall quality of your soil which in turn makes for healthier plants and less treatments.How To Start Composting:•Purchase a compost bin or make your own.•Place the bin in a dry, partially sunny space in your yard

with easy access to your garden.•Begin with very small twigs (1/2 inch layer), moisten

heavily, add an activator (ex: bone meal).•Add in layers of 2 parts green material (nitrogen rich) to

1 part brown material (carbon rich) by weight.•Turn and moisten.

To maintain, turn and add water weekly so it has a wrung-out sponge dampness. You may continue to add materials 2:1/G:B always being sure to cover or bury the green materials to prevent pest problems. Over time the material will decompose and you will have a finer compost that you can screen (filter out large particles) and use in your lawn and garden. Successful gardens begin at the ground up!

STAFF SPOTLIGHTNassau Bay Police Officer Kaila Sullivan has been with the Department for over 12 years. She is a valuable member of our community and goes above and beyond for our citizens. She was recently honored and commended for her actions investigating and identifying individuals involved in recent burglaries in Nassau Bay that resulted in two arrests and recovery of stolen goods from several victims throughout the City. Thanks to her swift actions, these victims were able to get their belongings back, and put an end to these acts of selfishness.

Officer Sullivan also led the City of Nassau Bay Cycling Team in the BP MS150. Thank you Officer Sullivan for all you do for Nassau Bay!

Those who were here for Ike need few reminders of the devastation, but regardless of how many storms you have lived and endured, it is always important to be prepared.Hurricanes like Ike emphasize the need for every citizen to have a well thought out personal and/or family plan and remember “If you fail to plan, then plan to fail.” The following are some basics that should be part of your plan:Protect from the Dangers of Inland Flooding•Protect Your Past - personal records and special items•Protect Your Present - BUY FLOOD INSURANCE!•Protect Your Peace of Mind - focus on planning & communications•Protect Yourself & Others - NEVER drive on flooded roads. “Turn Around,

Don’t Drown”

Prepare a Disaster Survival Kit •Have enough non-perishable food, water, and supplies for family and

pets to last at least (5) five days.

Prepare for Hurricane Season•Know if you live in a designated evacuation zone. Nassau Bay is in Zone

‘A’, not to be confused with flood insurance zones. Plan ahead for where you will go and when you will leave.•Familiarize yourself with your children’s school and your workplace

evacuation plans.•Learn how to shut off your utilities and know emergency numbers to call.•Protect your property, board up windows; secure outside furniture, etc.;

secure boats, trailers and other items.•Perform an Inventory, make copies of important insurance documents

(Property, Life, Health, etc) along with credit and ID cards. Make a video or take pictures of your property and belongings for insurance purposes.•Store important documents in a secure place away from home.•Keep some cash in a safe place that can easily be accessed during an

evacuation. ATM’s are useless during power outages.

vehicles or those with special dietary needs should call 211, the State Transportation Evacuation Assistance Registry, to register for assistance.

As a proud resident and local Realtor, I've long known that the City of Nassau Bay was a rare gem. Though it was only after having the privilege to participate in the inaugural class of Nassau Bay 101 that I realized how amazing each of the facets are that make our city shine. Nassau Bay 101 gave me a better understanding of the true inner-workings of our city and shed light on task and responsibilities in our local government that many of us might take for granted. The course consisted of six evening classes that took place once a week with dinner provided and was an excellent way for us to meet other community members. The attendees were residents from every corner of Nassau Bay as well as local business owners. Each week we were treated to a different set of speakers ranging from the new City Manager, to the Chief of Police, to the City Judge and even the Finance Director. We learned about how Police, Fire and EMS services are run, where the money for the city budget comes from and how it is spent, how zoning is regulated and how to run for city offices. The class was very hands-on and interactive. We participated in a mock trial and had the opportunity to tour the waste water facility. Most importantly, we learned how incredibly important volunteering and citizen involvement is to our city. From the fabulous volunteer fire department with its rich history, to the city council, to the events committee and even just resident donations, each citizen has an opportunity to play a very valuable role in their own way. I truly enjoyed every aspect of the six-week session and strongly encourage any Nassau Bay resident or business owner to participate in the next class. Through greater knowledge of how this fantastic city works, each of us can find a way to make it even better. ~Ashley Graves

COUNCIL MEETING RECAPMarch 21, 2016 - Special Council Meeting

Approved the continued membership in the BAHCVB but limit the City’s commitment to three years. Approved the appointment of a subcommittee to review the parking problem in Nassau Bay Approved a resolution opposing CR #2 known as the Central Region Alternative #2 Texas City Levee Modifications and Extensions North (SH146) and West-Galveston Ring Levee with a levee along SH146 from Dickinson Bayou north through Seabrook to Old La Porte Road. The proposed level would have elevations ranging from 21.5’ to 27’. Approved a resolution supporting CR#1 known as the 2.2.2.1 Central Region Alternative that recommends a coastal protection system for a levee on high ground north of High Island running along SH87 along the Bolivar Peninsula and tying into the existing Galveston Seawall and continuing along the length of the island terminating at San Luis Pass. The proposed levee would have elevations ranging from 18’ to 21’ and would include a large navigation gate located at Bolivar Road.
