We would like to thank you for all the time that you've dedicated to making our days here at PCDS memorable. We've enjoyed your guidance, wit, and humor. Despite all of the vicious rumors about American History, we can honestly say that junior year would not have been as wonderful without you. Your enthusiasm was and always is contagious and we thank you for always bringing life into the classroom. The constant "tension" between you and "Doc" always made us laugh. We hope that the "Class of 1999 Lounge" remains in your room as a constant reminder of the class that truly appreciated who you are and what you have done for us. opening day processionTraditionally, the first day oFschool begins with an all-school assembly. Each year, the seniors walk in with the kindergartners as a symbol of school unity and community. Opening day festivities also include a welcome back from the Head of the School, Mr. Brewster. When asked about their experience during the opening day procession, many kindergartners

j remarked "I don't remember the first day of school." The seniors enjoyed the experience.; According to Chris Rethore, it was "an emotionally riveting experience and was something

[he'd] looked forward to for [his] four years in PCDS" high school. The experience was the i opposite for Erin McKinely: "No little kid would grab my hand." Overall, this is a well-liked tradition.

energy, excitement, and dreams as we venture farther along our paths. Skills are taught and challenges are met while our own expectations reach new heights. F eet W etThe 1998 Dive Team was undoubtedly the most successful

PCDS dive team ever. The team gained some new members to bring the total to 10 divers. We had an outstanding season, and sent 4 girls and 2 boys to the regional meet. Two divers, Michaela Skloven and Stephen Canova, qualified for the State Championships. Stephen's performance qualified him for the final round, and he finished in the top 15 in the state.

Jessie Hinton officially retired in December 1998. He started work for PCDS in February 1965, making him the employee who has been on the books the longest. When he first came to PCDS, he was one of 3 employees in maintenance, compared to the 17 that are in that area now. He worked as a custodian, on grounds, and in the maintenance department. Jessie's working knowledge of the plant was utilized many times in the past and will be missed in the future, although I'm sure we can call on him when the need arises.

What I have just written seems like such a small tribute to a kind and gentle man who put his whole life into making this campus what it is today. I think I can say this for everyone who knew and worked with Jessie: we wish you only the best.

lohn Mack came to PCDS the bummer of 1991 as temporary help in the maintenance {department. He stayed until an {accident led to his early {retirement. Some may not have {known that John had a master's lliegree in education and had {caught school for approximately |Jl5 years. He had also owned and operated a nursery and had Ivorked in construction and {general building maintenance {before coming here. We all relied mot only on John's past experience in maintenance, but also on tiis knowledge of the campus and its workings. He seemed to jrnow where everything was.

■The comment "John did more than I thought" was made by |pne who took on some of his responsibilities. I'm sure he isn't rehe only one who feels this way. I would like to say this for all ||vho know John: our thoughts and prayers go with you in Jl/our recovery and retirement.

An accounting of the hours put in by Mr. Pettengill since he arrived here in 1984 would be just the beginning of understanding the depth of his commitment to Phoenix Country Day School.

Your next step would be to look back at his work with computers and Middle and Lower students. Mr. Pettengill understood the value of integrating technology in the curriculum rather than just offering it as a separate subject -- well before it became mainstream thinking. He began what we continue today.

N ext would be a tour of the campus' computer and phone networks and the many functions they provide. After Mr. Pettengill (Ed, to the people he now serves) became Systems Network Supervisor in 1994 to develop and support campus communications and administrative computing, our technological capabilities expanded quickly, giving us new ways to interact with information and each other. His ambition for what the School can provide its community has been matched only by his hours of commitment to the systems' reliability.

Thank you, Ed, for the efforts that came forth from your feelings for this institution we call Phoenix Country Day School. It will be a hard act to follow.

The year is “finished baking” as Cags would say, and all of our hard work has paid off. We have a book that we can be proud of. Of course the book would not be complete without thanking our trusty and consistent staff. So-Layout/Copy Staff: Kim, Lilli, Melanie, Michelle, Sarah, Sonia,

' Tatum, Zach, Tommy, Nadia, Meredith, Ashley, Andria and Lexie. Thank you for all of the effort | you have put into making the yearbook a success. Look at each page and think of all of the hours I you spent fighting with PageMaker, croppers, icky orange pencils and those tags, and smile because you’ll never have to listen to either one of us yell about deadlines again!

Photo Staff: Jessica, Erin, Chris, Sarah, Caroline, Ashleigh and Callie. Where would we be without pictures? Thank you for your dedication, diligence and hard work.

We all know that the first part of the book that is seen is the cover. In that light, we'd like to thank Gordon for creating a wonderful drawing for the cover.

Last but not least, Mrs. Kolbet. Without your guidance, wisdom, patience and technical support, this book would not exist (though according to Mr. Flail, it doesn’t exist anyway). We don’t know how to thank you enough- who knows, maybe some day we will take you to Blue Burrito and we ’11 pay!

A big merci beaucoup to all of the eighth graders who helped us identify and layout your pages. Take pride, and continue on into the Upper School. You’re wonderful!

We hope everyone enjoys the memories eternally encapsulated in the yearbook, or at least | enjoys looking at the pictures.

I would like to thank the entire staff of the Phoenician for all their hard work in producing a book of which they can be proud. I would especially like to thank the four yearbook divas: Jill Carland, Katie Green, Margot LaNoue and especially Krista Scott in the production of the book. The school community has been an enormous help in matching names with faces.
