Promising Research Results - Sesame Street

• A USDOE/CPB study showed that among very young children, viewing Sesame Street associated positively with subsequent letter-word skills, number skills, receptive vocabulary, and school readiness.

• Individual differences in these skills were fairly stable through the preschool years, suggesting that early effects of viewing can be lasting.

• As part of a longitudinal study, researchers followed up with those same students in high school. They found that children who often watched Sesame Street in preschool, compared to infrequent viewers:– had better grades in English, math, and science in high school, – perceived themselves as more competent in these subjects– valued achievement more than non-viewers

Page 29: PBS Education PBS TeacherLine Stations Meeting Update 22 October 2007 PBS TeacherLine Stations Meeting Update 22 October 2007.

Promising Research Results – Between The Lions• University of Pennsylvania Study of

American Indian preschool age children in New Mexico found:– children at risk for reading failure decreased from

39 percent to 12 percent– The number of children scoring above average in

key literacy measures:• letter knowledge• picture naming • oral language/vocabulary • phonemic awareness• blending sounds to make words

…increased from 23 percent to 64 percent.

PBS EDCAR: Educational Digital Content Asset Repository

More than high quality educational TV, teachers need a full range of “purpose-built” digital media objects – 2 or 3 minute video segments, audio clips, interactives, simulations, images and links – with full educational rights cleared for use by teachers and students.

These media need to be delivered in an integratedservices platform to deliver on the educational promise of the Web 2.0
