Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Today's Gospel sounds puzzling to contemporary readers, but it can be made less so by considering the economic

system which stands behind the parable. A steward is dismissed because he is squandering his master's property. He is called dishonest because he is not serving the interests of the rich man, his employer. In response the stew-ard, in an attempt to ensure favor for himself among the rich man's debtors, brokers repayment of the rich man'soans by foregoing the interest and fees that had been levied to line the steward's pockets. It is this action, in

which the steward puts aside his greed and takes the longer perspective in order to enhance his security, which iscommended by the rich man.

The passage concludes with three morals for the listeners. The first exhorts the listener to be prudent about theuse of wealth. Like the steward in the parable, those who would follow Jesus must put transitory affairs in proper perspective. Christians should handle the affairs of temporal life with an eye toward eternal life.

The second concerns trustworthiness. Those who can be trusted in small things can also be trusted in great things. If Christians handle money and other passing things responsibly, then they can also be trusted with the affairs of he Kingdom of God.

Finally, Jesus tells his listeners that no one can serve two masters simultaneously. God must be put ahead of money.  Retrieved from http://www.loyola.com/sundayconnection.

40 DAYS FOR LIFE - September 25 - November 3, 2013

AUGUSTA VIGIL LOCATION

Planned Parenthood

1289 Broad Street

Augusta, Georgia

Augusta Contact: Joel Presley at [email protected]

Vision and mission

40 Days for Life is a focused pro-life campaign with a vision to access God’s power through prayer, fasting, and peaceful vigil to

abortion.

The mission of the campaign is to bring together the body of Christ in a spirit of unity during a focused 40 day campaig

prayer, fasting, and peaceful activism, with the purpose of repentance, to seek God’s favor to turn hearts and minds from a cultur

death to a culture of life, thus bringing an end to abortion.

The 40 Days for Life campaign40 Days for Life is a community-based campaign that draws attention to the evil of abortion through the use of a three-point

gram:

Prayer and fasting

Peaceful vigil

Community outreach

40 Days for Life takes a determined, peaceful approach to showing local communities the consequences of abortion in their

neighborhoods, for their own friends and families. It puts into action a desire to cooperate with God in the carrying out of His p

for the end of abortion. The 40-day campaign tracks Biblical history, where God used 40-day periods to transform individuals, c

munities ... and the entire world. From Noah in the flood to Moses on the mountain to the disciples after Christ's resurrection,

clear that God sees the transformative value of His people accepting and meeting a 40-day challenge.

“Insidious: Chapter 2”

By Kurt Jensen

Catholic News Service

NEW YORK (CNS) -- Once again into The Furthe

go for "Insidious: Chapter 2," although we learn no

much more about that astral plane than we did in th

2011 first installment of this fright series.Maybe director James Wan, who shares writing

credits with Leigh Whannell, is still figuring out lif

after death. Anyway, The Further -- which two yea

ago we called "a reasonably ambitious Halloween

house" between the world of the living and Paradis

is merely a darkened studio set with fog machines.

Sometimes the righteous among the dolorously

parted therein, needing light to spot their pals, carry

Coleman lanterns -- sort of like Diogenes looking f

an honest man. Lots of moaning goes on there as w

In the original, Wan and Whannell only sent one

child, Dalton Lambert (Ty Simpkins) into this less--great beyond during one of his dream trances, and

father Josh (Patrick Wilson) had to go after him. Th

time, Josh starts out occupied by a dead person's sp

which sets up further spooky doings; up to four cha

ters at a time, including Dalton, are Further-bound.

You'd think the Lambert family might want to m

out of their charming Victorian gingerbread house,

at least buy some WD-40 for all those creaking doo

But no, they stay to tough it out with the spirit worl

Their place is haunted -- well, pestered by -- two

demonic ghoulies. One, Parker Crane, was a serial

killer known as the "Bride in Black" because he wowedding gown while slaying 15 people.

Though dead, Parker (played by various actors a

stunt people) continues to have anger issues becaus

his mother (Danielle Bisutti) -- our other unfriendly

ghost -- used to dress him up as a girl.

No one tries any exorcising; baseball bats and fi

are the preferred weapons for the finale in the base-

hospital with an intact records room, that Parker wa

developed.

Ghostbusters Specs and Tucker (Whannell and A

The film contains physical violence, intense sce

The Order has expanded the Knights of Columbus Essay Contest to all Catholic students  — in public, private or parochschools — in grades 8,9,10,11 and 12 during the current school year. The contest has also been expanded to go through tdifferent levels of competition to the international level.

The theme of the essay contest is “The Importance of Religious Freedom.” The contest opens the doors of young min

enabling the entrants to be creative, thoughtful and introspective in their work. The 2012 National winner received $300.

As Catholics we are called to participate in the political life of our country. This can be difficult at times because o

beliefs are often misunderstood and unpopular. Also, laws and regulations from our governments can be contrary

our beliefs and threaten to force us to violate our conscience. Discuss the challenges we face in this area, the impo

tance of religious freedom, and the idea of the Catholic in the public square.

All contestants on the local level are recognized for their participation in the contest. Participants are required to furnwritten parental consent. For entry forms and additional information contact: Timothy McCarthy at 706-831-1104.

The Knights of Columbus is an international Catholic family fraternal service organization with 1,843,587 million membe

in over 14,000 local councils. The 2012 contribution record includes donations of more than $167.5 million to charity and t

volunteering by members of more than 70 million hours of service.
