SAINT MICHAELS MISSION STATEMENT
Saint Michaels Catholic Community is a group of Catholic Christians associated with the Ar
Forces under the guidance of the Holy Spirit and the Archdioceses for the Military Serv
served by the pastoral leadership of our priest(s), deacon(s), and parish staff. The communi
dedicated to exemplifying Christian community by proclaiming the Good News of Jesus C
through worship, service, and witness to the people of Fort Gordon and surrounding communi
Today, the second Sunday after Pentecost, we celebrate a second solemnity, which marks our return to OrdinaryTime. Today is the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. At one time, this day was called CorpusChristi, Latin for the Body of Christ. In the most recent revision of the liturgy, the name for this day is expandedo be a more complete reflection of our Eucharistic theology.
The feeding of the 5,000 is the only one of Jesus' miracles to appear in all four Gospels. Luke places it betweenHerod's question, Who is this about whom I hear such things? and Peter's response to Jesus' question about whoe thought Jesus was: You are the Messiah of God. In Luke the feeding is not the result of Jesus' compassion forhe crowd but is instigated by the disciples. They wanted Jesus to send the crowd away to town. Instead Jesus tellshe disciples to give them some food on their own.
The passage is meant to remind us of two feedings in the Old Testament: the feeding of the Israelites in theesert and Elisha's feeding of 100 people with 20 loaves in 2 Kings 4:42-44. It is also connected to the institutionf the Eucharist. As in the Last Supper accounts in Matthew, Mark, and Luke and in Paul's account in 1 Corin-hians 11:23-24, Jesus takes bread, looks up to heaven, blesses the bread, breaks it, and then gives it to the disci-les. In using this exact language, Luke is reminding his readers that in this miracle Jesus is doing more than feed-ng hungry people as God did for the Israelites and the prophet Elisha did as well. The bread he gives is his body,
which he will continue to give as often as the community breaks bread in remembrance of him in the Eucharist andhe Father share all, Jesus and the Spirit share all.

After Earth
By John MulderigCatholic News Service
NEW YORK (CNS) -- You can't go home againat least, the title of a 1940 novel by Thomas Wadmonishes us. That's a bit of advice the charactethe gruel ing sc i -f i adventure "A
Earth" (Columbia) -- not to mention the real-life fbehind this plodding project -- would have done to heed.
Set 1,000 years after humans have been forceevacuate their environmentally despoiled home p-- get the message? -- director and co-writer (Gary Whitta) M. Night Shyamalan's coming-ofdrama finds its two leads inadvertently revisitingcrazy old world by way of a crash landing durinintergalactic military mission.
Needless to say they don't exactly get a wwelcome.
While the absence of homo sapiens has permnature to return to a flourishing state, it's now fu
people-averse predators. That's bad news for
Cypher Raige (Will Smith) and, even more sothings develop, for his teen son, Kitai -- playedSmith's real-life son, Jaden.
What with their downed spacecraft scatteredover the once-again-wild landscape -- gosh darn tdestructive meteor showers! -- and the rest of its dead, and Dad temporarily disabled ... well, the way out of this pickle is for Kitai to embark maturity-earning quest to retrieve the signal beamrepresents the surviving duo's only hope of rescue
It's not a journey on which most viewers willjoy accompanying him. Think lions and tigersbears sounded bad? How about poisonous leechpolluted atmosphere requiring inhaler hits everyhours and a ticked-off raptor with the approxim
wingspan of a 707? As for a purely fictional breesnarling monsters that prey on human fear -- cthe Ursa -- the less said about them the better.
The filial relationship at the heart of the procings -- Cypher allowed Kitai to tag along on the edition in the first place so the two could bond ultimately characterized by self-sacrificing love. Tdespite the emotional conflict resulting from a fatragedy we glimpse in flashbacks.
But the warrior code by which Cypher lives --which he strives to instill in Kitai -- seems to hmore in common with Zen Buddhism than withvalues promoted in Scripture.
Thus Cypher repeatedly insists that Kitai becintensely focused on, aware of, and at one withsurroundings. And the only way to overcome t
pesky Ursa is to "ghost," that is, to render youentirely free of fear.
The script's glib portrayal of the bonds unveterans, moreover, will strike at least some moviers as either jingoistic or exploitative.
The film contains much action violence, somit bloody, gory medical images, a stifled crude and a few mildly crass expressions. The Cath
News Service classification is A-III -- adults. Motion Picture Association of America rating is 13 -- parents strongly cautioned. Some material
