Payload Installation / Replacement This manual describes the installation of a replacement payload for the F-Series or PT-Series cameras. If you need help during the installation process, please call to speak with our support experts (877-773-3547).

This manual includes the following topics:

Installation Overview Removal of the existing payload Installation of the new payload Camera configuration

For safety, and to achieve the highest levels of performance from the FLIR camera system, always follow the warnings and cautions in this manual when handling and operating the payload and the camera system.

Warnings and Cautions Shut down the camera and turn off the camera power supply prior to any other installation steps.

Perform the installation in a work environment that includes appropriate electro-static discharge (ESD) precautions, such as properly grounded anti-static mats, wrist straps, and so on. Dissipate static electricity before handling any system components (camera, payload, electronic boards, cables and so on).

Handle the payload carefully so that the silicon lubricant on the O-ring stays intact.

Except as described in this manual, do not open the PT-Series camera for any reason. Disassembly of the camera (including removal of the cover) can cause permanent damage and will void the warranty.

Be careful not to scratch the camera’s infrared optics and avoid leaving fingerprints on the optics.

Take care when connecting or disconnecting cables. A damaged cable can cause a short in the electrical circuit and other camera problems.

The F-Series and PT-Series cameras require a power supply of 24 Volts. Operating the camera outside of the specified input voltage range or the specified operating temperature range can cause permanent damage.

When lifting the PT-Series camera use the camera body and base, not the tubes.

Be safe when handling cameras that are mounted in elevated locations. Ensure the installation is done under working conditions that are free of known dangers and according to recognized industry safety standards.

Installation Overview In order to install the new payload, it is necessary to remove the existing payload first. Once the new payload is physically installed in the camera, it may be necessary to change the camera configuration using a web browser if the new payload is a different type than the existing payload.

When configuration changes are made with the web browser, the settings are saved to a configuration file. It is a good idea to make a backup of the existing configuration file prior to making changes.

If the new payload has a different field of view (FOV) or a different resolution, it will be necessary to change the configuration. The FOV parameter can have an effect on how fast the camera will pan left and right, so it is important to match the parameter with the actual FOV of the camera.

The FOV and resolution can be determined from a label on the side of the payload. The payload designation is formatted as “Payload-XYY” where:

X indicates resolution (1=160x120, 3=320x240, 6=640x480)

YY indicates horizontal FOV in degrees.

For example, Payload-325 indicates it is 320x240 resolution and 25° FOV. For record-keeping purposes, it is also a good idea to make a note of the payload serial number, along with the camera serial number.

If the camera is controlled by serial communications rather than TCP/IP, it may be necessary to install an Ethernet connection to the camera if one does not already exist.

After modifying any parameters with the web browser, it is necessary to save the changes and then restart (stop and start) the Nexus server. It is a good idea to make a backup of the finished configuration file once all the changes have been completed.

Requirements 1) 3mm hex key 2) FLIR Payload Removal Tool (included with the payload) 3) A computer with a web browser1

1 It may be necessary to set a static IP address on the computer. In most cases this requires a login with administrative rights.

4) An Ethernet connection to the PT-Series or F-Series Camera

Removing the Old Payload If possible, remove the camera from its mount and place it on a work surface that provides ESD protection. If the payload is to be replaced while the camera is mounted, take proper safety precautions and ensure the work is performed according to recognized industry safety standards.

1) Shut down the camera and turn off the camera power supply. 2) Loosen the four screws located on the front plate of the payload (located top,

bottom, left and right). The screws do not need to be removed completely, but loosened until they move freely. The screws are captive and will not fall out of the faceplate.

Note: Do not remove the inner screws. These are used for bore sight adjustments with pan/tilt cameras.

Loosen these 4 screws

3) Hook each end of the FLIR Payload Removal Tool under one of the captive screws and pull firmly to disengage the payload from the housing.

Note: If a FLIR Payload Removal Tool is not available, it is possible to remove the payload with your hand. To make it easier to get a grip on the payload, there is an indentation or notch on each side as shown in the image.

4) Slide the payload out of the housing and place it in a bag that provides ESD protection. Handle the payload carefully so that the silicon lubricant on the O-ring stays intact.

Installing the New Payload Handle the replacement payload carefully so that the silicon lubricant on the O-ring stays intact.

1) Insert the new payload into the housing by lining up the rails on the payload with the guides in the housing. With an F-Series camera, the guides will be on the sides of the housing. With a PT-Series camera, the guides are at the bottom of the housing. Take care that no wires are pinched and the O-ring in the housing is properly seated.

2) Push gently on the payload until the white connector engages with the mating connector. When the payload is inserted properly, it will lock in place and the bottom of the payload will be flush with the base of the housing.

Note: With the PT-Series camera, it may be necessary to move the payload around slightly to align the connectors. If the connectors do not line up and it is difficult to insert the payload all the way, reach inside the tube, straighten the connector and try again. Another option is to remove the rear of the enclosure, install the payload in the front, and then reinstall the rear of the enclosure, as it may be easier to align the connectors this way.

Observe that the white connector on the back of the payload will self-align with the mating connector on the inside of the camera housing.

8

Important: Ensure the payload is inserted fully before tightening the hex screws.

The bottom of the payload should be flush with the bottom of the enclosure.

3) Once the new payload is seated properly, tighten the four screws to secure it to the housing.

4) Power up the camera and confirm that the new payload is operating and provides video.

Camera Configuration If the replacement payload is the same type as the original payload, it is not necessary to make any configuration changes. If the replacement payload has a different FOV or resolution, the configuration should be updated to match the new payload.

After modifying any parameters, it is necessary to save the changes and then restart (stop and start) the Nexus server. Once all the changes have been made, it is a good idea to make a backup of the configuration file.

1) If necessary, connect the camera to a network using the Ethernet interface. If this is the first time the Ethernet connection is used, refer to the Installation Manual for information on how to configure the IP interface.

2) Connect a computer to the same network and configure its network interface to use a compatible IP address (the IP address should be on the same subnet as the camera.).

3) Open a web browser such as Internet Explorer or equivalent and type the IP Address of the camera into the Address Bar

4) Log into the Web Configurator using the following login: User: admin Password: indigo

427-0031--00-12 Rev. 110 Payload Installation Guide

10

5) First make a backup of the existing configuration. Then if the new payload is replaced with the original payload, the matching configuration can be easily restored. Select the Configuration File link on the left side of the page.

You can back up the configuration and keep a copy on the camera; that way it is easy to restore. Simply type in a unique name in the Backup to file field and click Backup. If necessary, the original configuration (called factory.defaults) can also be restored.

11

6) To change the parameters, select the Devices tab (near the top center of the page) and then select the Infrared link from the list of devices on the left of the page.

Figure 3: Infrared Device Configuration

7) Modify the FOV Degrees parameter to match the horizontal FOV of the new payload.

8) If the new payload has a different resolution, modify the Frame Size X and Frame Size Y to match the resolution of the new payload.

12

Note: Setting the Frame Size parameters does not actually change the resolution of the camera. The parameters are used for information purposes in the FLIR Sensors Manager (FSM) software.

Saving Configuration Changes After making any configuration changes, it is necessary to save the changes to the server (there is a Save button at the bottom of each configuration page). Once you save configuration changes to the server, the changes do not take effect immediately. Generally it is also necessary to stop and restart the server for the changes to become effective. The server has a configuration that is in effect and running, and another configuration that is saved (and possibly different than the running configuration). The following message indicates the saved configuration is different than the configuration in effect (the running configuration): “You must restart the server for the changes to be effective”.

Restarting the Server To restart the server, first click on the Stop button at the top of the page, and wait for the page to refresh. When the server is stopped and the page is refreshed, the status will show as “Server Stopped” and the button at the top of the page will change to Start rather than Stop.

Click on the Start button to restart the server, and when the page refreshes, the status will again show as “Server Running…”. It may take up to 15 seconds to start the server, depending on the configuration.
