Paul Harris Fellows - Rotary Club of Bundaberg...

This is my first edition of The President's Word, so I would like to start of with a few words about East Rotary's Changeover Dinner Tuesday night. Well, what a great event it was, with all our long serving members being recognised from the past 20-30 years, 30-40 years and then over the previous 40 years. These members are the backbone of our Club. Then we honored our PHF recipients Tricia and Maurie, both of them deserved their awards and a large congratulations to them both. Our 100% club meeting attendees were also recognised, with Cal Toft topping the rank with 42 years - congratulations Cal. I said I was proud and honored to receive the Presidents position and I say that from my heart, and would like to again thank my wife Melanie and PDG Ian Mylrea for the support and encouragement they have given me. I look forward to our year ahead and all the positive feedback that we will certainly receive. I will see you all next Tuesday Night as your new President. Ever wonder why the Rotary year begins 1 July? The interna onal conven on ini ally played a key role in determining the start date of our fiscal and  administra ve year.

Rotary's first fiscal year began the day a er the first conven on ended, on 18 August 1910. The 1911‐12 fiscal year also related to the conven on, beginning with the first day of the 1911 conven on on 21  August.

At its August 1912 mee ng, the Board of Directors   ordered an audit of the Interna onal Associa on of  Rotary Clubs' finances. The auditors recommended that the organiza on end its fiscal year on 30 June to give the secretary and treasurer  me to prepare a financial statement for the conven on and board, and determine the proper number of club delegates to the  conven on.designated 30 June as the end of the fiscal year. This also allowed for changes to the schedule for repor ng club membership and payments.

Even The Rotarian changed its volume numbering  system to correspond to the fiscal year (beginning with vol. 5, July 1914). The term "Rotary year" has been used to signify Rotary's annual administra ve period since at least 1913.  An ar cle in The Rotarian that July noted, "The Rotary year that is rapidly drawing to a close has been signal‐ized by several highly successful joint mee ngs of Clubs that are so situated as to assemble together easily and conveniently."     Since the execu ve commi ee's decision in 1913, the end of the Rotary year has remained 30 June.

Rotary's first fiscal year began the day a er the first

conven on ended. The conven on of the Rotary Clubs

of America was held in Rotary’s birthplace, Chicago, in

1910.
