Leadership has been the field of study for ages as it is meant not only for providing the vision and direction to the organizations, society, and nation but also for ensuring the welfare and the holistic growth of people including physical, mental, and spiritual. Historically, world has witnessed few leaders who performed this responsibility with aplomb whereas many have failed miserably in the leadership role. The success and failures of leaders has always fascinated the academicians, researchers, and philosophers and has resulted in development of various theories and dimensions of leadership. Leadership theories based on trait, behavior, and situation, have been popular in the past but with times have been found unsatisfactory due to missing links.
Through observations and literature it could well be established that it is not only the knowledge, talent, potential, and skills that are sufficient to perform well in the leadership role but the value systems, morality, virtues, and sacrifice are equally important which stems from spiritual wisdom. This spiritual wisdom which was the cornerstone of leadership of majority of revered and successful leaders this world has witnessed in the past has apparently been found missing in present times. This is the reason, maybe, that today we find more leaders abusing the leadership position rather than using it wisely. Afflictions of mind such as ego, attachments, aversions, and fear of losing are today affecting majority of leaders and unless and until spiritual wisdom prevails in them and in the future leaders, leadership crisis would be difficult to remove.
Similarly, the field of management is also struggling to find effective solutions to management problems simply because of neglection of the spiritual dimension of human being. Spirituality and management are two highly misunderstood concepts in this world and it clearly reflects in the way the world has shaped in last few decades. We must understand that management without spirituality is toothless. What is needed today, as the watchword of the emerging global society, is a new global renaissance, and that is the harmonious integration between apparently conflicting concepts of materialism and spirituality. It is the call of the time that all those occupying leadership positions and those involved in the field of management have to raise their consciousness and perform their respective roles coming out of the self-interests and establishing connectedness with the outside world. They should involve themselves in a creative interaction with society around them. The aim of leadership and management should be inclusive growth and its benefit should not be limited to a particular section of the society. This realization is impossible without spiritual wisdom.
This conference is a platform provided to the people occupying leadership positions, management professionals, academicians, researchers, seekers of spirituality, and a common man to discuss, exchange, and present the ideas, thoughts, and research work on the theme of the Conference and bring out the pragmatic solutions rooted in spiritual wisdom for the present day problems facing leadership and management.
