    Maiko Hayashi

After completing her TAFE diploma, Maiko

transferred to UniSA and was given credit for

the first year of the Bachelor of International

Business. Now that she is studying for an

    internationally recognised degree, Maiko is

confident that her choice will be better for her

when it comes to launching her career.

My program offers quite a range of dif ferent

subjects, so I have an opportunity to find work in

many places. So hopefully in the next two

years of my study here, I will have the

opportunity to really work out what I want to

    do.

Being an international student at both TAFE

and UniSA has also given Maiko a range of

experience that other students wouldnt normally

encounter. Not only has she experienced a new

culture, coming to Australia from Japan, but

she has also noticed the increased responsibility

    associated with university.

Uni is quite diff erent from TAFE. You need to be

disciplined enough to organise yourself and your

time properly. You get used to doing things

on your own. You need to prepare yourself

before you start uni and take initiative to do

    things.

Many companies look for people who have

higher academic qualifications and the skills and

knowledge that come with university study. I

would like to be able to get a job back in Japan,

or in another country where I can use my English

and apply my international business skills.

    Welcome

UniSA is the largest provider of TAFE transfer options in the State. We receive preferences from

80% of TAFE students wishing to continue their tertiary education. Thats more than double the

preferences given to our nearest SA competitor and more than the combined preferences for the

    other two state universities.

UniSA has worked with TAFE SA for over twenty years, establishing extensive transfer and

pathway arrangements to enable TAFE students to pursue further tertiary study with us.

With a modern, progressive and support ive approach, UniSA provides state-of -the-art online

technologies, and improved on-campus facilities. Our close working links with industry,

government and the professions allow us to offer an educational experience that will thoroughly

prepare you for achievement and innovation throughout your career.

Whether you are wishing to advance your career or take a whole new direction, the experience of

studying at UniSA will make all the difference. We look forward to welcoming you as a student.

    Professor Peter Hj

    Vice Chancellor and President

    University of South Australia

    The Division of Business is

    accredited by the European Quality

    Improvement System (EQUIS).

UniSA is a proud member of the

    Australian Technology Network

(ATN), an influential alliance of five

    distinctive and prominent Australian

    universities.

Almost 2000 TAFE SA graduates apply to continue their studies at universities in South Australia

each year, and the majority of these students apply to attend the University of South Australia in

disciplines as diverse as nursing, architecture, accounting and engineering.

The high proportion of TAFE SA graduates choosing the University of South Australia is testament

to how Pathways from TAFE SA to UniSA helps students understand the requirements and process

of applying for credit for prior learning.

This cooperative endeavour, between two of South Australias leading learning institut ions, helps

to build the States skill base and, at the individual level, students are able to boost their career

    opportunities.

I wholeheartedly support Pathways from TAFE SA to UniSA and encourage TAFE SA graduates to

explore opportunities to advance their skills with further studies.

Use TAFE SA to fi nish

    your degree faster.

UniSA has more credit transfer and pathways arrangements with TAFE institutes thanother South Australian universities.

A Certificate IV, Diploma or Advanced Diploma from TAFE is accepted for entry intomany UniSA programs. If you receive a place in a program on this basis, youll beable to obtain credit for your previous study. You can also apply for addit ional credit,

UniSA offers maximum fl exibility to

people who want to study. There are

    TAFE to UniSA.

Studying at TAFE is one of the easiest and

most successful pathways towards a university

degree. Even if you left school at year 10 level,

your TAFE qualification may be all you need

    to gain entry to UniSA.

All the programs listed in this publication,

as well as many other UniSA undergraduate

programs, have a TAFE sub-quota. This means

that applications for entry into these programs

are assessed only with other TAFE applicants,

increasing your chances of gaining entry.

UniSA has block credit transfer arrangements

where maximum and minimum credit is

    awarded for completed TAFE study.

Did you know?...More than 40 per cent of

    UniSA students have entered

    their programs through

    pathways other than Year 12.

Your experience canmake a differenceYou may receive credit towards

your UniSA program if you have

    related experience through

    employment, other studies,

    professional associations or

similar bodies. How much credityou could receive will vary and

    Whats it like to be

    a UniSA student?

Starting university can be easier if you know what to expect. You may be wonderinghow lectures and tutorials work, about your study options, or about how you will

juggle study, work and personal responsibilit ies.

Generally, your study schedule w ill be

divided into contact hours (the t ime you

spend i n lectu res, tut orials and pr act icals)

and independent study hours (the ti me

you devote to study, research, revision

and assessment pieces). Cont act hours

wil l vary depending on t he program you

choose to study you may be requi red

to spend as litt le as 10 hours per week

on campus. Independent study hours will

vary according to the individual but , aswith other commitments, the more you

are prepared to put in, the more

    you will get back.

Its true that university will require a substantial

commitment of your time and energy, but

UniSAs range of flexible study options will allow

you to choose a path to best suit your needs and

    circumstances.

    Learning at UniSA

UniSA programs consist of numerous coursestaken over a number of academic years. A

Bachelor degree program, for example, will

usually consist of 24 courses taken over three

years (usually eight courses per year).

Generally, your study schedule will be divided

into contact hours (the time you spend

in lectures, tutorials and practicals) and

independent study hours (the time you devote

to study, research, revision and assessment

pieces). Contact hours will vary depending on

the program you choose to study you may be

required to spend as little as 10 hours per week

on campus. Independent study hours will vary

according to the individual but, as with other

commitments, the more you are prepared to

put in, the more you will get back.

    Your study options

Depending on the program you choose, you

may have options about where, when and how

    youd prefer to study.

Full-t ime study requires the completion of

36 units per year, but your contact hoursmay vary depending on your course. If you

are studying on campus, you will attend

    lectures, tutorials or workshops, and/or

    practical classes. (Please note overseas

students must study on campus and full-t ime)

Tips for succeeding at uniThe thought of tackling assignments

and exams may seem a little daunting

    if youre considering starting uni.

Youll also need to work out strategies

for juggling your study, work and

    personal commitments. Here are a

few tips that may help you to make

    the most of your studies:

Work out a realistic study plan to

    keep yourself aware of assignment

    deadlines and exam periods.

    Review this regularly and adjust

    it according to your progress

Set up a comfortable, quiet study

space at home where you wont be

distracted by noise or other people

If you are employed, discuss your

    study plans with your employer

to see if you can establish flexible

    working arrangements

    Make time for catch-ups with

friends and family for moral support

and some time out from study

    Establish support networks at

    uni clarify queries with your

    tutors and lecturers and develop

friendships with classmates whounderstand your study demands

Stay healthy take time out to

exercise, eat well and get plenty

    of sleep

    Visit a Learning Connection office

    in person or at www.unisanet.unisa.

    edu.au/learningconnection for

    various resources including learning

    guides and online/on-campus

    workshops, advice about studying

    off-campus, and information about

    UniSAs computing facilities

Talk to a UniSA librarian for detailed

information on researching methods, borrowing policies and establishing

a study pathway that will best suit

    you. For more information, visit

    www.library.unisa.edu.au

Part-t ime study allows you to study a

program over a longer period of time.

As a part-t ime student, you study less

than 75 per cent of a normal full-t ime

load and can undertake between one

and three courses per study period.

    Off-campus (external) study allows you

to undertake all or some of your courses

from home using supplied print materials

and online study resources. You may

occasionally need to attend some on-

    campus classes or field placements.

    Classes

Lectures are usually held in large lecture

theatres with other students for an hour

or two. They offer an opportunity to listen

and take notes about the main concepts

    covered in your course.

Tutorials, or workshops, are run by tutors

for smaller groups of students, and arean interactive way to share thoughts, ask

    questions and generate discussion about

    course content.

Practicals may take place in a laboratory,

on a computer or with other specialised

equipment, depending on the course. They

    provide opportunities to develop practical

skills and apply theories learned in lectures

    and tutorials.

Field trips are short excursions or longer

    trips sometimes even overseas

where students gain practical insightinto their field of study and learn a range

    of relevant skills.

Work placements offer students the chanceto get into a real-world work situation, where

they can apply the knowledge and skills

learned at uni in a working environment.

    Overseas student exchanges provide

the chance to study at one of more than

    90 accredited international universities.

    An international exchange will contribute

    to your personal and professional

development, and will be highly regarded

    by your future employers.

AssessmentTo pass a course you must satisfactorily

    complete the relevant assessment requirements.

Assessment will vary from course to course,

but may include exams, written assignments,

    presentations, practical work and/or class

participation. Depending on the course you

undertake, your assessment will be graded

according to the Universitys marking system.

When you have satisfactorily met all program

and UniSA requirements, you will be eligible to

graduate. Qualifying for a degree from UniSA

is a major achievement and you will be able to

celebrate your success with family and friends at

websites and discussion groups linked to course

homepages. As a UniSA student, you will have

your own web page and email address. Its also

likely youll use a number of interactive internet

    Dougie Fraser

TAFE qual ifi cation: Diploma in

    Engineering Comput er Systems

UniSA Program: Bachelor ofApplied Science (Healt h Scienceand Human Movement)

Dougie completed a Diploma in Engineering

(Computer Systems) at TAFE after completing

high school. While it gave him a qualification, it

wasnt really where he wanted to be.

I was playing soccer at the time and there were

some physiotherapists involved with the club

who got me interested in injury rehabilitation.

Dougie is now studying the Bachelor of AppliedScience (Health Science and Human Movement),

and received credit towards the degree from the

study hed done at TAFE. For someone who has

played sport all his life, hes now much happier

in his new field of study.

Im keen to work in exercise/physiology and am

doing injury rehabilitation next year, so would

like to do something with t hose two fields

combined. Im also coaching a soccer team,

    which gives me great experience.

Coming to uni is a great way to build your

qualifications. Id like to be able to studyHonours and depending on how I go I could

try t ransferring into Occupational Therapy

or Physiotherapy as Im also interested in

these areas and know there are good job

    opportunities.
