Waar hebben jullie gezocht, dat wil zeggen: in welke database? Als je in de verkeerde database zoekt, vind je niets Wees ervan bewust dat elke database z’n inhoudelijke beperkingen heeft. Wat is de beperking van Google Scholar, bijvoorbeeld? Zie: coverage google patents: https://support.google.com/faqs/answer/2539193?hl=en# alleen US, EP en WO-patenten. PDF’s van US-patenten Full text ook niet altijd beschikbaar. Hoe hebben jullie gezocht, dat wil zeggen: met welke woorden of zoektermen? Bij het zoeken wordt je op het verkeerde been gezet doordat in het filmpje wordt gesproken over onzichtbare fietshelmen. Dit is reclame-, marketingtaal maar misschien niet relevant voor het zoeken naar patenten. De zoektermen ‘invisible bicycle helmet’ zijn op zich in dit geval niet zo goed. Toch wil ik met deze zoektermen verder doorgaan om zoekfunctionaliteit van databases te kunnen illustreren.

Zoeken is op zich simpel: een zoekbox waar je zoektermen invoert. Maar dan moeten het wel de ‘juiste’ termen zijn Wat zoek ik? Veelal zoekt men te algemeen, dit is met te algemene of te weinig zoekwoorden. Gevolg: mer a boire. Known item searching, bijv. het patent van Haupt en Alstin: relatief makkelijk omdat je weet dat het bestaat! Subject searching = onderwerpsgericht zoeken is lastiger. De juiste zoektermen zien te vinden en je weet nooit of je ‘volledig’ bent, dit is alles gevonden hebt. Eerst op zoek naar relevante zoektermen (ook aan de hand van het literatuuronderzoek zelf; opletten wat je tegenkomt op het scherm) Alternatieve zoektermen: head protection ; body part protection Gehaald uit patenten die je op het scherm ziet bij het zoeken. Belangrijk ook om te weten wat voor informatie per document (i.c. patent) er gegeven wordt: fulltext of alleen bibliografisch ; als namen van Inventors niet vermeld worden, kun je er ook niet op zoeken. ‘Verplaats je in het document’.

If you don’t know what you’re looking for you don’t know what you find! Searching is ‘exact match’ Watch specialist terms (classification codes) in retrieved patents and use them for
further searching Proceed step by step = search term by term Take numbers for a guideline
• Short of records: extend your search by using broader terms, by using truncation, by omitting and’s or by adding or’s (synonyms)
• Too many records: limit your search by using more specific search terms, by omitting truncation, and or’s, by adding and’s & not’s or by searching in fields
Neither be satisfied or dissatisfied too soon Start in time and keep track of what you’re doing
