Pastor’s noteCelebrating the Holy Spirit and Holy Trinity at homeBefore his final journey to the cross, Jesus took some time to prepare his followers for his departure from them. He knew that the finality of his death would impact them greatly and he wanted to provide some comfort to them as well as an assurance that, even though he would no longer be with them in flesh and blood, God would not abandon them. In the book of John, Jesus has a meal with his disciples and tells them that he will not leave them alone. He says, "I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever…You know the Holy Spirit, for it dwells with you and will be in you." Jesus gives his followers the Holy Spirit as a sign and presence that he is still with them wherever they might be.

These can be comforting words to us as well. As we continue to wrestle with the ramifications of COVID-19 and the disruption it has caused, it can be easy to become frustrated and to feel isolated. The importance of social connections has really become evident as so many of those connections that we would normally take for granted are not able to happen because of the pandemic. A big part of developing our sense of community as a church is gathering in our church buildings for worship and fellowship. When those activities are not able to take place, it can feel like God is more distant than normal. Like the disciples so long ago, we too need to be reminded that the Holy Spirit dwells with us wherever we might be. The Holy Spirit dwells with us whether or not we are in a church building or not.

To help us remember this, the theme for our Stewardship Campaign this year is, “The Holy Spirit in our Homes.” It will focus on the assurance that prayer, devotion, and worship can take place in our homes as much as it can at church. To promote this idea, the Stewardship team is planning on developing a home altar gift box that may be delivered to homes or picked up at church. This box will contain items like an all-in-one mini-communion cup and wafer, candle, and booklet for devotions at home or getting a space ready on your table to join us for online communion.

We may not be able to go out as freely, due to the pandemic, but the Holy Spirit is still with us and in us so that we might know God’s presence is all around us.

HTLC Council Action Items—September 2020The church council met via Zoom in September. We are very thankful to Mike

Sadowski for all he has done as president of the church council and to Jean

Kammerer for all she has done as secretary. Miriam Nakayama was elected

council president. Both Mike and Jean have promised to be available for advice

and help!

• Council approved a new committee led by Joan Eggert and Ally Sadowski;

called Authentic Diversity. This committee will help us successfully live out

the promises of the welcome statement. The team will facilitate activities,

events, learning workshops, and discussions.

• Construction on the entrance ramp will begin on October 8. It shouldn’t

interfere with the Outdoor Worship Service on October 11. Railings will be

added on October 12.

• A task force is being formed to clarify roles of an interim youth coordinator

and an interim children’s coordinator as they will be hired shortly.

• Council also approved to move towards hiring a full-time rostered

experienced staff member for the 2020-2021 calendar year. This will guide

the stewardship campaign for this fall and pledges that are made will

determine the final decision if we can afford such a position. We have faith in

HTLC people and in God to step forward in this direction.

Mid-week Bible study"Prayer: Does it Make

any Difference?"We ended the month of September with two presentations from Dr. Fred Tonsing during our Bible study time. He shared with us about his father’s experiences as an army chaplain in World War II and discovering the horrors of the concentration camps.

We had a guest speaker come because we are trying to incorporate some of what we used to do during our Sunday morning Spiritual Growth Forums before the pandemic started. During this hour on Sunday mornings, we would have church members or guests from outside the church come and share on a variety of topics. We want to give an opportunity for those presentations as we go into the fall by sharing them in our Wednesday video segment. At the same time we will also continue with Bible study topics as well.

In October we will take a closer look at the subject of prayer by using a book by Philip Yancey called, Prayer: Does it Make any Difference? Here are some of the themes we will be covering:

October 14 Who We Are & Who God Is

October 21 It’s About Relationship

The church office isoperationalWhile the church campus remains closed for worship services and gathering for fellowship, the church office remains operational as we have been since the beginning of the pandemic. To respect social distancing, the staff has been alternating their time in the office and doing work from their home office.

We now have new rules and procedures in effect to adhere to county guidelines, which allow us to announce to the congregation that we are operational. We are using the word “operational” because the word “open” would imply that things are back to normal which they are not and won’t be for awhile due to the corona virus. Here are some of the restrictions and guidelines we now have in place if you come onto the church campus.

Guidelines• Volunteers and church members who are visiting the church campus

and/or staff members need to make an appointment. This helps us maintain physical distancing.

• When you come onto the church campus, masks are required.

• If you are on the church campus, please honor physical distancing and remain 6 feet apart from other people.

• You need to knock on the church office door to be let in. Only one person at a time should be inside at the reception desk. You may not go into the office beyond the reception desk unless you are a staff member or have been authorized to do so by a staff member.

• If you enter into one of the church buildings, you need to sign the Attendance Log available at the entrance. We are required to track who is on campus. If someone does test positive for COVID-19, we would initiate contact tracing to alert all close contacts of that person.

• Please do not visit the church campus if you or a member of your household is feeling sick, has a fever, or is under quarantine.

We want you to know that we are here for you. We can be reached by telephone, by email, video-conference or by appointment. If there is a spiritual matter you would like to talk about, or you would like a pastoral care visit, I can be available through these same methods. Please let us know if we can assist you with anything.

2021 Stewardship CampaignIn the church we use the word “stewardship” to talk about how we see all that we have as a gift from God and we are called to be good “stewards” or “managers” of those gifts. Part of being a good manager is not just keeping what we have to ourselves, but also sharing with others. This also means sharing with the ministry that happens through our local churches.We hope you will consider sharing some of your resources to help support the work of Holy Trinity in the coming year. Next to this article is our pledge card for the year 2021. We invite you to let us know if you will be participating as an active member of the church this coming year and what that participation might look like. It would be great to have you commit to a certain amount each month to give, but it is also helpful to know if you plan to give in general even if you do not want to commit to a certain amount every month. The card can be cut out and mailed into the church office.Thank you for discerning the level at which you might be able to give and letting us know about it. Staffing updateAt the end of August and early September we had two positions resign. Our Children’s Ministry Coordinator resigned to take a full-time job teaching and our Youth and Community Life Director resigned as well. The youth committee and council quickly took up the task of how we might make sure our youth and family ministries are staffed for the coming school year. It was decided that we would look to hire a part-time interim youth minister, particularly for the High School group, and a part-time children’s minister for the younger kids. Those search processes are underway.

Meanwhile, the council began discussing what our long term staffing situation might look like. After a conversation, a consensus was reached that Holy Trinity did need another full-time staff position and that the council would like to recommend that the position be filled with either a deacon or a pastor. There was also consensus that this position should be focused on youth and family.

The one big question that will need to be addressed, especially in this time of pandemic, is whether or not the church can afford such a position. The council decided that they would put the idea to the congregation during the Stewardship Campaign and make a decision in December using the amount of pledges as a guide for the level of staffing we believe we believe we can sustain.

It's apple and pumpkin time at Honey

Tree! Children are baking apple

cake, tasting, measuring, weighing

and graphing apples by color. It's the

season for apple and pumpkin stories,

songs, and fingerplays. The simplicity

of this traditional early childhood

curriculum theme is a delight and

a relief during these complicated

Covid-19 times.

In mid-September we welcomed

12 teachers and approximately 96

students back to our campus. Honey

Tree successfully passed a City of

Thousand Oaks reopening inspection

and received a "Committed To Being

Open and Safe" certificate to post.

The challenges of new routines, health

and safety practices, and financial

impact continue, but it is a pleasure to

see and hear young children playing

and laughing on play yards and in

classrooms again.

Dear Friends,

Sadly, I must report the passing of our dear friend Mary Lu Single on September 1, 2020, after a lengthy illness that was unrelated to COVID-19.

She was a fighter, in spite of various health problems, but was cheerful, upbeat, and maintained her dignity; an indomitable spirit and love of life and family until the end.

She was married to Clarence, the love of her life since 1981.

Mary Lu was a consummate volunteer at HTLC, totally involved in many aspects of congregational life and leaves behind numerous friends gained over their many years here. She will be sorely missed.

You may not be aware of it, but many states across the U.S. have a Lutheran Office of Public Policy sponsored by the ELCA as well as synods and local churches. The office for California is in Sacramento. These offices do not endorse particular candidates or parties, but they are to work as advocates for different policies based on guidance from ELCA social statements. They are also to raise awareness and inform Lutheran churches about what is going on with certain state issues and suggest ways our faith may speak to those issues.

In California we have a system where we can vote

on propositions which can have a direct effect on our communities. The problem is that it can be hard to determine exactly what those propositions are all about. The Lutheran Office of Public Policy makes recommendations on how to vote on these propositions based on their research and on the ELCA social statements. These are simply recommendations that you are free to disagree with. They are only meant to be a guide along with other resources as we try and make decisions on these important topics.

It is, practically, necessary to meditate every day, morning and evening. It is necessary in order to ground and root our lives in the foundational reality of Christ’s living Spirit that is manifested in every aspect of human life. But it is especially characterized by its gentleness and the powerful gift of forgiveness. You may well ask, ‘How will sitting to meditate bring me to this compassion and forgiveness; how will the mantra lead me to this love?’ When you begin you have to take that on faith. There is no way of answering that question except for yourself, through the practice.

And just like that, summer ended and fall arrived. Two low temperature nights signaled the trees to foreshadow the inevitable performance of dazziling colors to come. The tomato plants are quickly ripening off their fruit in an effort to plant seeds for next year's growing cycle. Flowering plants are producing seed pods, and I am attempting to collect them and catalog their success—or lack of success—in this year's garden. Nature, it seems, is all of a sudden moving rather quickly to prepare.

There is a lot of movement around town, too. Tourists dwindle and the shopping streets are not quite as crowded. Boat owners are winterizing their vessels to be stored safely out of the harsh weather until next season.

Now, instead of seeing watercraft at the shoreline or speeding across the lake, they are loaded on top of vehicles and trailers and are speeding along the roadways to their winter homes.

This is also about the time of year that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers begins the drawdown of the lake. It is in preparation for the anticipated heavy rains and run off from the surrounding mountains as well as the spring snow melt. Any day now, the shore line will begin to change its shape. The drawdown takes just a few short weeks and the scenery changes from gentle waves lapping the sandy beachs or splashing on rocky shores to long muddy shorelines and docks that appear to have grown very tall spindly legs.

As the coller weather chases me indoors, thoughts turn to the loss of the warm summer days and enjoying the delightful evenings sitting on the front porch late into the evenings. But then I realize that there really is no loss at all, just change. And there is nothing wrong with that. God has created a world full of ever changing beauty and my job is to appreciate it, take time to welcome it, and use it to glorify His name.

We have now had six successful outdoor worships on three different Sundays with a 9:00 AM traditional service and 6:00 PM informal service. People have been great about following the guidelines and keeping their masks on. Because of this, we plan to do more in October. As the sun begins to set earlier, however, we have decided to move the 6:00 PM informal service to the morning at 11:00 AM. This will also allow us to do a little less set-up because the sound system will be up from the earlier service.
